INTRODUCCIÓN La Matemática como ciencia ha proporcionado al hombre las más poderosas herramientas para enfrentar los más disímiles problemas de la cotidianidad. La mayoría de los campos del saber humano se valen de técnicas matemáticas para indagar indagar en la explicación explicación de relaciones relaciones causales causales de los procesos procesos y fenómenos fenómenos que ocurren en cada especialidad. Hoy en día resulta frecuente encontrarnos artículos de las ciencias médicas, químico-farmacéuticas, ciencias sociales (o de cualquier área general del saber), en que se haga referencia a algún concepto o ente ente matemá matemátic tico. o. Probablemente uno de los conceptos más útiles y aplicables en la Economía sea la derivada de una función. Cualquier curso de matemática superior contiene, inel ineludi udible bleme ment nte, e, un tema tema dedi dedica cado do espe especi cial alme ment nte e a las las apli aplica caci cion ones es de la derivada. Generalmente se acostumbra presentar el estudio, de acuerdo al área específica del conocimiento desde donde se aborde la temática, en dos partes. De una, la utilización de la derivada en la obtención de soluciones estrictamente matemáticas; a saber: el cálculo de límites indeterminados y el trazado general de curvas. De otra, las aplicaciones específicas en la especialidad de que se trate. El objetivo de este trabajo es ilustrar las aplicaciones generales de la derivada, con la intención de que este escrito sea utilizado por estudiantes de Economía.
