BAB I PENDAHULUAN A. Latar Belakang Matematika merupakan ilmu universal yang mendasari perkembangan teknologi modern, mempunyai peran penting dalam berbagai disiplin dan memajukan daya pikir manusia. Perkembangan pesat di bidang teknologi informasi dan komunikasi dewasa ini dilandasi oleh perkembangan matematika di bidang teori bilangan, aljabar, analisis, teori peluang dan matematika diskrit. Untuk menguasai dan mencipta teknologi di masa depan diperlukan penguasaan matematika yang kuat sejak dini (Depdiknas, 2006). Mata pelajaran Matematika pada satuan pendidikan SMP/MTs meliputi aspek-aspek sebagai berikut. (1) Bilangan, (2) Aljabar, (3) Geometri dan Pengukuran (4) Statistika dan Peluang.(Depdiknas, Peluang.(Depdiknas, 2006). Pendekatan pemecahan masalah merupakan fokus dalam pembelajaran matematika yang mencakup masalah tertutup dengan solusi tunggal, masalah terbuka dengan solusi tidak tunggal, dan masalah dengan berbagai cara penyelesaian. Untuk meningkatkan kemampuan memecahkan masalah perlu dikembangkan keterampilan memahami masalah, membuat model matematika, menyelesaikan menyelesaikan masalah, dan menafsirkan solusinya (Depdiknas, ( Depdiknas, 2006). Dalam menyelesaikan masalah dibutuhkan metode, strategi, pendekatan dan model yang tepat.Kita harus dapat membedakan yang mana disebut metode, strategi, pendekatan dan model. Metode pembelajaran dapat diartikan sebagai rencana yang sistematis untuk menyampaikan informasi (Gerlach & Elly, 1980 dalam Shadig, 2009). Metode juga dapat diartikan sebagai cara yang telah terpola tetap untuk memperoleh pengetahuan. Menurut Toeti Soekamto & Winataputra ada 10 model pembelajaran, di antaranya : model pencapaian konsep, model latihan penelitian, model sinektiks, model pertemuan kelas, model investigasi kelompok, model yurisprudensial, model latihan laboratoris, model kontrol diri dan model simulasi.

Metode, pendekatan dan model di atas dipilih agar siswa dapat menemukan jawaban pertanyaan dengan cara yang lebih variatif, mandiri, saling menolong antar siswa namun tetap dalam kontrol dan pengawasan guru.
