The Renzo Piano Workshop won an international competition to design e aou u ura en er n oumea, a ac c s an err ory n ew Caledonia.
New Caledonia was founded by the French government. The French government wanted to build a center in this Pacific Island colony to honor the culture of the Kanak peoples.
The center was name after in Jean‐Marie Tjibaou, an important political leader in New Caledonia who was assassinated in 1989.
The center was being constructed form 1991 to 1998.

‐ , tropical climate. Its relatively warm throughout the year, with average temperature of 25‐27 degrees celsius from September to March and 20‐23 degrees celsius from April to August.
Building Envelope
The architectural complex is formed of “huts” of different sizes.
Ten cone‐shaped wooden huts grouped among the pine trees.
The huts are turn towards the bay of Noumea and connected b a edestrian ath.
The interpretation of this cultural center is on the local constructional procedures with careful analysis of the habits and customs of the indigenous population. ano, pro ec re ec e e ea o p ace, us ng symbolic/formal terms as in the use of materials.

Building Systems •The center was divided into three monothematic zones. ‐The exhibit area: housing permanent collection on the culture, history, and works of art. •The functions of the center (exhibition spaces, multimedia library, cafeteria, conference and lecture rooms). •There are louver below the roof are fixed open to maintain a balance of pressure inside and out. The louvers prevent to he winds from lifting the roof. The louvers were also used as shading devices.
Spatial Performance
Covered walkway, green, and outdoor area. The sunlight enfilades the structure, casting a cont nua y c ang ng pattern o s a ows t roug t e ouvers an mem ers o t e t e s aves.
Interior Space •The ‘Great Houses’ are linked by a long, gently , ceremonial alley of the traditional Kanak village. •T e i entity o t e Kana is not on y reinforced through the form of the building but also through its relationship with the natural landsca e.

Building Integrity
These spaces are linked together with path and passages, shaded and protected with overhangs and vegetation. On the North side there’s low structures containing offices, libraries, media room, and more exhibition spaces.
Floor Plan
Illumination •The‐curved walls consist of three different ap ragms a ow ng a equate natura um nat on: a system of movable curtains, a wall of laminated wood and an additional bamboo wall filter the light and the sounds of the tropical forest by letting nature s ng. •The big shells trapping the wind obtain natural ventilation from the environment by channeling a r n e ower par o e cons ruc on an y blowing warm air outwards through a convection system. • e per ormances o e s e s ave een a so studied with every kinds of wind in order to analyze the natural ventilation in each climatic conditions.
Roof Detail
Panio design is the double roof system, main purpose s to ra n t e gutters. e uses aluminum sheeting, which which extends out the building to shade the outside walls. If the roof composed with metal, it is practical for ra ant coo ng as t con ucts eat qu c y an emitting energy.

Building Performance •The tall wooden structures that Renzo Piano designed are both traditional and contemporary. • roofs allow for natural climate control and the soothing sounds of Pacific breezes. •The cost of the cultural center was 320 million •The cultural center occu ies 8000 square meters
