Drafting Piping Layout Check List (PDMS)
Descripti on Interference hoists, trolleys bridge crane and other lifting devices. Check hook heights for monorails and bridge cranes for proper servicing of equipment. Consider expansion or contraction on lines, particularly across match line. Put anchors or guides as required. Have stress problems run, if deemed necessary. Make certain that you are working with the latest stress information. (Stress Department must examine revisions). Adequate room is provided for pulling exchanger tube bundles or to rod the tubes in fixed tube exchangers. Ensure the piping layout on all high speed equipment incorporated stress analysis comments from Piping Engineer. Accessory piping and equipment is shown on piping drawings. Identify connections with the same code letters as used by vendor on his drawings to aid field in hookup. Use schematic or isometric details to depict congested accessory piping. Pumps and centrifugal compressors (vertical and horizontal split) Arrange piping such that suction and discharge valves do not have to be removed in order to remove impeller or rotors. Ensure all pump suction piping incorporate NPSH (Net Positive Suction Head) comments from Process Engineer. Examine each of pump suction, Cone or basket type temporary strainers with point against flow (preferred) must be shown on piping drawing. Make sure those equipment can be removed w/o jacking piping. In elevation view, show motor drives for in-line style pumps and allow clearance over motor for piping or structures. Consider clearance required to pull motor. On “Can” type pumps and deep well pumps in offshore service, provide clearance above the pump for removal pump and provide access platform operate casing drain valve. Positive displacement pumps for pulsation bottle requirement. Some provision, without welding, must be made for future addition of dampeners (on both suction and discharge) if not installed on original installed. Since NPSH and velocities are critical, consult with squad leader or engineering on innovative suction piping which could provide a superior installation. Pulsation bottles should be located as close to the pump as possible. Ensure all pump suction piping is routed in the shortest and most direct manner, and that no high points that could trap vapors exist. An eccentric reducer with the flat side up should be used at pump if the suction originates

Drafting Piping Layout Check List (PDMS)
Descripti on For multi-stage pumps, check manufacturer’s requirements for minimum flow bypass. (Must be shown on flow sheets). Centrifugal compressor suction piping for proper straight run of pipe between suction flange and first elbow. There should be no valves, orifice, or any restriction in this straight run of pipe. There is data available to calculate the straight run required. Provide clearance around expander for removal of shaft and check location of valve hand-wheels. On gas engine exhaust check that expansion joint does not have excessive pipe weight load applied. Make sure the exhaust does not discharge into unsafe areas or areas normally accessed by operators. Do not use butterfly valves in Engine Hot Jacket Water Service if it would require a major shutdown to replace. (Isolation valves, pumps and engines). Provide flexible connections at connections to engines and other vibrating equipment where specifications allow. Starting and service air receivers downstream of e lubricated air compressor must be steamed out at 6 month intervals. Provide connection for this. Gas turbine and waste heat recovery unit installations. Check location and height of heater stacks in relation to turbine inlet air filter. Take into consideration summer prevailing wind direction since inlet air temperature to the turbine is critical on developed horsepower. Final selected location should be confirmed with the squad leader. Flare headers must not have a pocket inside of plant area. (Some method must be provided to drain low point if pocket is unavoidable). Do not pocket overhead vapor lines from towers to condenser. Make sure “operating” valves are operable from grade or operating platform. Provide chain operators when location near grade or platform is impossible. Wedge gate valves, 12” and larger with power operators, generally must not be installed with valve in a vertical run pipe. Check that bolts can be removed from butterfly or wafer check valves that are installed between elbows or reducer. Note that cap screws are required on lug style valves and clearance is required on both sides. (Use lug style against equipment flange). Where small ball valves with soft seats are to be socket welded or back welded, a note should be placed on

Drafting Piping Layout Check List (PDMS)
Descripti on Note on drawings that Cameron ball valves shall be complete with grease fittings and body bleeder. (Important). Suitability of check valves when installed in vertical or reciprocating service. Locate for reasonable access. On fire water installations, make certain that all codes are followed as required by local regulation. Do not depend on flow diagram of fire system to indicate relief, test and other miscellaneous connections required by code. Make provision for hydrostatic vents and drains. Don’t take these vent and drains lightly-they are important! All drains located in pipe rack should be a suitable distance from supporting steel so that drains are not damaged by line expansion. Impulse type steam traps used in cold area locations should be installed in a vertical position with the flow down (for drainage) when used for steam tracing. Check customer’s specifications and with process project engineer for required number and location of corrosion test connections. Leave proper clearance for tool used in inserting and retrieving coupons. Hot traps – Check clearance dimensions on available hot tap machine before locating connections. Match or drawing limit lines around area. At match lines on piping drawings, indicate service of line and where it is going to or coming from. Examine drawing for compliance with applicable OSHA regulations : Ladders, Platforms, etc. Indicate all instruments and controls on drawing plans and sections using correct item numbers. Make sure that all utility and fire hose stations are indicated on piping plans. Avoid showing any pipe support details on piping drawings. Supports detailed on piping drawings are often overlooked and not fabricated when required in fields. Keep lifting lug areas clear for cable to pick up decks. Make sure all (Pressure Safety Valve) PSV are mounted vertically with the spring case on t op, pointing up. Check location of relief valves that go to flare header. Check customer specifications to see if these valves can be mounted lower flare header. If mounted lower than header, make certain that drain is installed to eliminate liquid leg between (Pressure Safety Valve) PSV and flare header. Provide reasonable maintenance accessibility to (Pressure Safety Valve). PSV (Pressure Safety Valve). Check customer’s specifications to determine if davits or platforms are required.

Descripti on Locate level control station in apposition where associated level gauge is visible from bypass valve at control valve. Orient level control on vessel so that gage glass is visible while adjusting pilot. Is back lighting of gage required ? Located associated Pressure Indicator (PI), Pressure Controller (PC) and Pressure Control Valve (PV) within sight of each other. The PI must be readable from the PC. Consider space requirements required for power operators on (Pneumatic Operator Vehicle) POV, (Remote Operator Vehicle) ROV, Emergency Shut Down) ESD (etc.) valves. Be sure sufficient space for actuator and maintenance is available. Provide adequate clearance under large control valves to clear skid beams if valve body drain piping is required. Pressure control point for control valves should, if possible, be located a minimum of 10 pope diameters from valve. If controlling pressure on a vessel, the ideal location is on the vessel. Located pressure instrument taps upstream of thermowell probe when possible for more accurate operation. Check that thermo-wells will fit where couplings have been located. Make sure there is adequate room to install the (Thermo Well) TW, (Temperature Indicator) TI, or (Temperature Transmittal) TT. In cold service, all thermo-wells must be self-draining to avoid icing. Access clearance around instruments at vertical vessel platform. During initial design stages a scaled layout plan should be made to determine these clearances and extra platform width provided if required for gage barrel mounted instrument. All “vessel” to confirm that gauge column or (Level Controller) LC connections do not straddle mist elimination Element of vessel. Operating ranges of all level instruments are covered by level gages or freeze plugs (cold service). The fluid flowing through meter runs identify on the drawing the proper location of the flange taps (horizontal or vertical.). And consider the correct upstream and downstream length. Refer to instrument hook up drawing and/or contact the instrument engineer for specific upstream and downstream length requirements.
