Definition of University
The word university is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium , roughly meaning "community of teachers and students. A university is an institution of higher education and research, which grants academic degrees in a variety of subjects. It is a corporation that provides both undergraduate education and postgraduate education.
History of University
The term university was first coined in Europe by the Italian University of Bologna,, with a traditional founding Bologna date of 1088, is considered the first degree-granting university of the world. Many medieval universities were run for hundreds of years as Christian cathedral schools or monastic schools, which appear in the 600 AD before their formal establishment as university
Universities in Bangladesh are mainly categorized into three different types
Public (government owned Private
universities)
(private sector owned universities universities))
International
(operated and funded by international organizations )
There are only two international universities in BD.
Asian University for Women (Chittagong), Islamic University of Technology (Gazipur)
Public university
Public university is the university that is funded by the Government and managed as self-governed government institutions. Bangladesh has 33 public universities as of 2010. University of Dhaka, established in 1921, is the oldest Public University of the country.
Karjon Hall houses the science faculty of the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Private University Private universities are universities which operated by Private sectors. Establishment of private university in Bangladesh initiated after the Private University Act 1992. 54 such universities are operational in six out of seven division of the country. Barisal is the only division of Bangladesh without having any private university.
Northern university Bangladesh
Advantages of public university:
Reputed institution Low tuition fee An institution of meritorious students. Qualified teachers Large Campus Hostel facilities inside campus Certificate is comparatively valuable in job market.
Disadvantages of public university:
Session jam Active politics. It takes more than 3-6 months to publish the results of an exam. Den of student leaders and armed cadres Huge number of students in a classroom Teachers do not take class regularly Governing body fails to control because of large number of students.
Conflicts among groups of students and police are trying to control the situation. This is a common picture of Public University like Dhaka University or Chittagong University.
Advantages of private university :
No session jam. No student politics Totally English medium. Top class educational environment & classroom. It takes 3-7 days to publish the results of an exam. Follows international grading and semester system. There is make up class for hartal days or missing classes. Qualified teachers & active career counseling department. After the class, every teacher is available in his room for 2 hours. One can use computer (MS office, power point) to prepare projects and assignments as well as multimedia presentation.
Disadvantages of Private University:
Very high tuition fee.
Small and rented campus.
Not highly reputed.
Limited time for courses.
A lot of low caliber students get admitted admitted in private university.
There are many low quality quality private universities around us.

In Bangladesh there are limited number of Public University compare of students. So private Universities are necessary to ensure higher education for all. From all above statement we can say that both Public and Private university playing an important role in developing human power in Bangladesh.
