LAND CONVERSION
DESERTIFICATION
he Sahelian-drought, that began in /01 and took place in sub-Saharan Africa, was responsible for the deaths of between 22,222 to 342,222 people, the displacement of millions more and the collapse of the agricultural base for se+eral African nations. 5n orth America during the /62#s, parts of the %anadian Prairies and the 7!reat Planes8 in the S turned to dust as a result of drought and poor farming practices. his 7$ust Bowl8 forced coun tless farmers to abandon their farms and way of life and made a fragile economic situation e+en worse. 5n both cases, a combination of factors led to the process known as $esertification. his is defined as the persistent degradation of dryland ecosystems due to natural and man-made factors, and it is a comple9 process. $esertification can be caused by climactic +ariances, but the chief cause is human acti+ity. 5t is principally caused by o+ergrazing, o+erdrafting of groundwater and di+ersion of water from ri+ers for human consumption and industrial use. Add to that o+erculti+ation of land which e9hausts the soil and deforestation which remo+es trees that anchor the soil to the land, and you ha+e a +ery serious problem: oday, desertification is de+ouring more than 32,222 s;uare miles of land worldwide e+ery year. 5n orth America, <=> of the land in orth America is affected by desertification while in the ?editerranean, water shortages and poor har+ests during the droughts of the early //2s e9posed the acute +ulnerability of the ?editerranean region to climatic e9tremes. 5n Africa, this presents a serious problem where more than 3.= million acres of land, which constitutes <6> of its drylands, are affected by desertification. 5ncreased population and li+estock pressure on marginal lands ha+e accelerated this problem. 5n some areas, where nomads still roam, forced migration causes these people to mo+e to new areas and place stress on new lands which are less arid and hence more +ulnerable to o+ergrazing and drought. !i+en the e9isting problems of o+erpopulation, star+ation, and the fact tha t imports are not a readily a+ailable option, this phenomenon is likely to lead to greater wa+es of star+ation and displacement in the near future. Against this backdrop, the prospect of a ma@or climate change brought about by human acti+ities is a source of growing concern. 5ncreased globa l mean temperatures will mean more droughts, higher rates of erosion, and a diminished supply land water which will seriously undermine efforts to combat drought and keep the world#s deserts from spreading further. he effects will be felt all o+er the world but will hit the e;uatorial regions of the world especially hard, regions like Sub-Saharan Africa, the ?editerranean, %entral and South America, where food shortages are already a problem and are ha+ing serious social, economic and political conse;uences. "e ha+e written many articles about desertification for ni+erse oday. ere#s an article about the largest desert on Carth, and here#s an article about the Atacama $esert.

. he interaction between human acti+ities and watershed geology is accelerating long-term changes in the carbon c ycle of ri+ers. "e e+aluated changes in bicarbonate alkalinity, a product of chemical weathering, and tested for long-term trends at /< sites in the eastern nited States draining o+er 302 222 km3. "e obser+ed statistically significant increasing trends in alkalinity at 03 of the /< sites, while remaining sites e9hibited n o significant decreasing trends. )+er 42> of study sites also had statistically significant increasing trends in concentrations of calcium Eanother product of chemical weatheringF where data were a+ailable. Gi+er alkalinization rates were significantly related to watershed carbonate lithology, acid deposition, and topograph y. hese three +ariables e9plained =2> of +ariation in ri+er alkalinization rates. he strongest predictor of ri+er alkalinization rates was carbonate lithology. he most rapid rates of ri+er alkalinization occurred at sites with highest inputs of acid deposition and highest ele+ation. he rise of alkalinity in many ri+ers throughout the Castern .S. sugg ests human-accelerated chemical weathering, in addition to pre+iously documented impacts of mining and land use. 5ncreased ri+er alkalinization has ma@or en+ironmental implications including impacts on water hardness and salinization of drinking water, alterations of air–water e9change of %)3, coastal ocean acidification, and the influence of bicarbonate a+ailability on primary production ∼
