BRIGADA ESKWELA NARRATIVE REPORT 2018 Introduction School is an institution which is responsible for molding the learners to become a responsible individual of the society. A student is to be crafted here to be a better person that will become an emblem of the kind of a learning center center where he will grow. The school demands administrators and teachers to work with others; it includes the stakeholders, volunteers, government and non-government organizations, and other institutions to accomplish the designed tasks and objectives. These would need dedicated school personnel, cooperative parents, accountable community, and innovative learners. The DepEd Memorandum No. 066, s. 2018 otherwise known as National Schools Maintenance Week or commonly called Brigada Eskwela aims to prepare the school with the help of the above others in collaboration with administrators and teachers. The theme for this year’s activity is “ Pagkakaisa Para sa Handa, Ligtas, at Matatag na Paaralan Tungo sa Magandang Kinabukasan.” The activity happens one week ahead before the formal opening of classes commences May 28, 2018, to June 02, 2018. However, the start of these six days is not the indicator of the beginning of Brigada Eskwela. In fact, as early as the first month of the current year, the Brigada Eskwela was pre-implemented. Starting January 02, to May 11, 2018, around this time was the assessment of physical facilities and maintenance needs of the school, the resource mobilization, organization of the Brigada Eskwela committees and the orientation of their specific roles and tasks put into order. The next activity was the Brigada Eskwela Kick-off and Caravan on May 24, 2018 in the Department of Education, Division of Camarines Sur. By this time, the 3rd Congressional District of the DepEd Division of Camarines Sur, including us, had the Kick-Off at Siembre High School, Bombon Camarines Sur. The activity went well, and some best practices were also o bserved to implement in our school. One of the high motivations for Brigada Eskwela is knowing the fact that environment plays an enormous role in the students' learning. The schools and classrooms, as well as facility that are not condu cive to learners hinder the quality of learning that they will be getting. So, the initiative of the DepEd to have a spirit of volunteerism, Bayanihan volunteerism, Bayanihan as as we Filipinos call it to clean up and repair the school and its facility before the opening of classes is one of the best activities that Sagurong High School is proud of every year. As well, believing that the community cannot stan d without the school, and likewise the school without the community, the school is the face of the community. Thus, all the people in the community even those whose children are not studying in the sch ool share a part of themselves, give a hard work and volunteer themselves to support the program. Thus, the school personnel are very much indebted to the primary stakeholders (the students and the parents in school), Local Government Unit of Pili (LGU), (LGU), members of the Barangay Council, the police o fficers (PNP), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), members of the Pantawid Pamilya Pilipino Program (4P's), students from University of Santo Tomas (USANT), and all the volunteers volunteers for without them, the following following would not have been made possible: Pruning/trimming the trees around the school

Highlight: Grand Opening of Brigada Eskwela 2018 May 28, 2018
Today’s highlight is the is the Grand Kick-Off or Opening of the Brigada Eskwela 2018, otherwise known as School Maintenance Week. Albert Einstein once said, "If you cannot ex plain it simply, you do not understand unde rstand it well enough." From this quote, we anchored and described in one word, the Brigada Kick-Off at Sagurong High SchoolSimple. To facilitate the Opening of the Brigada Eskwela, we made a simple program, explained the aim of the School Maintenance Week, set up the goals to achieve based on our Action Plans, divided the tasks, gave the necessary information, and introduced the right peop le or the focal person to approach. Then, we started working. The program started at precisely 8:00 in the morning with all the presence of all the school personnel and the stakeholders and volunteers who attended. The Brigada Eskwela started by a prayer lead by Ma'am Jennyrose F. Feolino, followed by the Philippine National Anthem conducted by Ma'am Lija Sue M. Pante. Sir Eugene Abragan gave the Opening Remarks. The school head, the over-all chairman of the activity, Julieto Benito B. Dela Torre gave his message co ncerning Brigada Eskwela. He discussed a brief background of the School Maintenance Week, its goals, and the goals that we set in the school to achieve by the end of Brigada Eskwela 2018. It was a long message, full of contents necessary for the stakeholders and vol unteers to know. The chairman for every ever y committee and the members of the Brigada Brigad a team were also introduced to facilitate the long-week task. Rhodora C. Altez discussed the tasks and the necessary information concerning the schedule and the assignments assigned to ev ery group of volunteers.
Aside from the highlights mentioned above, one of the highlights of the program was encouraging en couraging the people of the community to help and imbibe the Bayanihan spirit that is innate to Filipinos. Bayanihan involves the voluntary effort of the community members to help its co-members of that same community in need, and this is witnessed all throughout from the start to the end. The Brigada Kick-Off in Sagurong School was indeed, the cooperation of all the leaders of each group. The representative of the Barangay Coun cil was present, Councilor on Committee on Education, Jocelyn M. Maternum; the ever supportive mayor of the Municipality of Pili arrived, Honorable Tomas P. Bongalonta; the Municipal Link of the Pantawid Pamilya Pilipino Program (4P's) was present; the parents and the students were there; everybody everybod y was ready to take the next nex t step on. Finally, Sir Jumel L. Pante closed the program reiterating the purpose of Brigada Eskwela and the goals that the leaders of Sagurong S agurong High School have set. The program ended at 11:30 A.M. Overall, the Opening program of Sagurong High School Brigada Eskwela 2018 turned out grand, yet simple. It was grand because all the people from the community were around and it is simple just because everything that concerns the activity was delivered an d well-understood. It turned to understand the real essence of Brigada Eskwela. It turned out that stakeh olders and volunteers were able to understand more clearly the reason for Brigada Eskwela Initiative, and it is nothing but for good, and for the sake of the learners. Wait, the day was not yet over. After the lunch break, the parents, and students in Grade 7 and Grade 8 went back. At precisely 1:00 1:00 in the afternoon, they started started cleaning the Grade 7-Aquamarine, Grade 7Emerald, Grade 8 -Jade, and Grade 8- Topaz classrooms. Some parents stayed under the heat of the sun to cut the grass. They continued their work unt il it was 5:00 in the afternoon, and it was time for them to go home, and be back the following day. It seems pretty quick seeing the areas clean. No wonder at all, these people are inspired and motivated to share a part of them in long-week cleaning days. All it takes is commitment and dedication to render a da y of service for the benefits of the learners-their sons and dau ghters. In the end, all is well, and pretty straightforward.
Highlights: Making of the Plant Boxes and the Cleaning of the Classrooms May 29, 2018 The second day of Brigada Eskwela marked the plant box making as well as the classroom cleaning. These two were the apparent result of the hard work of students and the parents in Grade 7 and Grade 8. But not only that, it is also because of the cooperation of other volunteers who were walk-ins. The stakeholders and volunteers started arriving at 7:30 in the morning. However, they started working at 8:00 o'clock. Upon their arrival, they wrote their names on the attendance sheet and log their time of arrival. They were aware that they had to write not only the time - in but also the time -out. This is one of the ways that the Registration Committee members can monitor the volunteers. The registration was over, and a time for the most - awaited part began - the spirit of volunteerism. Here and there, we saw the stakeholders and volunteers. To and fro, they were cleaning inside the classroom, outside the classroom, and anywhere in the areas where dirt and dust, plastic and leaves, debris, and other mess were scattered. They were helping each other put up the everlasting plant boxes in front of the classrooms. All of them are busy doing their own assignments. By the way, the committee chair guided the volunteers, and they know exactly who to approach with if they have concern.
Going back to the highlights, It was not that hard to put up the plant boxes. It was not as hard as you think. In fact, it was quickest work we ever saw. This had become possible simply because of the cooperation of the stakeholders. Apart from that, the workers were amazing and fabulous. It was too good to be true. But see, working with it did not seem too difficult. It was not even seem hard or tiring because the workers were enjoying. They enjoyed helping each other from 8:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the afternoon afternoon that the only thing they were doing was work. In fact, we were not only seeing one hand, we were seeing many hands. These hands were helping each other achieve the goal of the day, to finish the plant boxes and clean the classroom. It was perfectly amazing, it was done within the day. At the end of the day, the plant boxes were visible for everybody. The moment you entered the gate of Sagurong High School and walk right by on the pathway. Here you will see the newly constructed plant box.
Highlights: Cutting the Grasses and Fencing the School May 30, 2018 The main highlights of the 3rd day of Brigada Eskwela were cutting grasses on the school ground and fencing the school. Similar to the past days, working hours started at 8:00 in the morning and ended at 5:00 in the afternoon. From then on, the school has started to get better because of the improvement of the school grounds as well as the fence. On this day Brigada report, we synthesize the occurrence of school fencing to support the school, specifically, Sagurong High School in the installation and repair of fencing around school grounds and playing areas. This report also discusses the advantages of this to the school and the stakeholders. Moreover, we also cover the benefits of maintaining the grass on the school ground well-cut. We believe that working on the school fence during the Brigada Eskwela may enhance school safety. Certain types of fences may provide further safety ‐related benefits like solid fences. It is the main reason why as much as we can; we want to avoid repetition of work that is possible if we will be using bamboo and other light materials. So, we thank our volunteers, government and non-government organizations, and other individuals who donated materials to help carry our goal of having an additional fence. Not only will will this, by having a concrete fence, our our students not be able to cut classes. classes. Thus, Thus, it will help help in managing the students and making sure that nobody will go out of the school on time not intended for them to do so. With only one gate, it can help mitigate student's navigation at times they wanted to do the common, "over the bakod" or jumping out on the fence. Furthermore, lockable gates can reduce the number of access points to our school which is necessary because many times the school property is being stolen by thieves. Besides, securing this fence at this time can help to define ownership of a given territory of the school and define the boundaries of various kinds around and within school property. Because of this, our eternal thanks go to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) who extended their support for the workforce to build the fence. They are one group of soldiers who worked under the heat the of the sun. So, we are thrilled that they help us yearly during the Brigada Brigada Eskwela. Along the way, the Barangay Council of Sagurong always extends their assistance. The laborers who were also constructing the road in the barangay lend us the mixer for the cement to make it even easier to make the solid fence without manually mixing it. Moreover, the school grounds look pretty impressive after the grass cutting from yesterday up today. The School Maintenance Week is helpful not only for the beautification of the school but also for the people in the community. As it is very apparent that there had become camaraderie when there is Brigada Eskwela, more so is volunteering for the benefits of the entire community, and this starts from the school where the students - regarded as the hope of the country, are molded. Once and for all, it is everybody's concern, and so glad that everybody concerns about making this place ready for the start of the classes.
Everything went well today in school for the 3rd day of the Brigada Eskwela 2018-achieving success success from the goals of the long – long – week week activity; cutting grasses and fencing the school. Let us move forward to see what we did further for the remaining days.
Highlights: Constructing the WASH Area and Digging the Garbage Hole (WINS) May 31, 2018
Today's 4th day of the Brigada Eskwela 2018, the highlights are the construction construction of the washing area and digging the garbage hole. Let us start by giving a quick review of why we included the construction of the washing area in our primary goals this Brigada Eskwela 2018. Wash in School is a three-star approach for School-based management for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in School. We want to fully implement the approach this school year to ensure that our learners have the correct knowledge and understanding of adequate hygiene and sanitation; improve their equitable access to safe water and hand washing facility; improve the hygiene and sanitation practices among the learners; and enable them to develop life-long positive hygiene and sanitation behaviors. Moreover, we wanted to ensure that schools are kept clean and safe through school-based solid waste management, proper drainage, and eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitoes to prevent vector-borne diseases and food sanitation. Our vision in the school would not be realized if not because of the assistance of the Grade 9 and Grade 10 students and parents, as well as our volunteers from the Philippine National Police (PNP). Moreover, the very active members of the Student Government Organization and CAT officers extended their effort to help in the construction of the washing area while other police officers were busy digging the garbage hole for us to manage the garbage effectively. All of them started out working at 7:55 in the morning morning and finished at 5:00 in the afternoon. By the end of the day, the garbage hole is ready for the trash while the Wash area was finished and standing. The water pipe still needed to install and fix its water flow. Over-all, the day was very productive. It was an excellent day to work with volunteers and the people who have a very willing hand and innate spirit of volunteerism, Bayanihan as we termed it.
Highlights: Tree Planting and Planting in the Schools' Vegetable Garden June 01, 2018 On June 01, 2018, the 5th day of the long-week activity not only in Sagurong High School but also in the entire Philippines highlighted the Tree Planting and Planting at Gulayan sa Paaralan or the School's Vegetable Garden. We all know that planting a tree is a lifelong venture. How well this investment grows depends on the type of trees selected and the planting location, the care provided during planting, and of course, the follow-up care after planting. Getting the the new tree tree off to a healthy start start will help help the tree mature to its full size size and ensures ensures it will will provide environmental, economic and social benefits throughout its lifetime. It is in fact, one of the reasons why we teach our students about gardening, and Gulayan sa Paaralan or Vegetable Garden is a mandate by the department that we belong. Knowing the benefits of tree planting and the vegetable garden, we include this in our Brigada Eskwela priorities. By By this time, time, not only the parents and students students in Grade 11 and Grade Grade 12 were the ones who who worked on the the vegetable garden but also the members of the Pantawid Pamilya Pilipino Program (4P's). Very early in the day, it was about 7:30 in the morning when the members of the program arrived. All of the 4P's members dedicated themselves to extend assistance to the school institution, the Sagurong High School during the day.
The 4P's members were all present. In fact, even their Municipal link also went to the school to monitor them, and support the kind of service that these parents and concerned citizen were doing. They planted different kinds of trees and vegetables. They also water the plants afterwards. By the end of the day, space and idle land became useful. The once vacant soil became productive, and the people became became productive too. too.
Fixing Damaged Chairs and Windows, and Painting Classroom Walls/Ceilings/Boards June 02, 2018 The end of the Brigada Eskwela in Sagurong High School was on June 02, 2018. To be exact, this was the 6th day of the long week of work. By this time, we called the day for the finishing touches. Among the activities were fixing the damaged chairs and windows. It also includes painting the classroom walls, ceilings, bulletin boards, chalkboards, and other minor damages to fix and improvements to do. The working day started at 8:00 in the morning and finished at 5:00 in the afternoon. On this day, some students and parents from different grade levels who were not able to render their service in the last five days arrived this day. Other volunteers from the Sagurong High School community also helped in painting. Then, almost all of the teachers were preparing their classroom, making it ready for the opening of classes. As we looked around the school campus, the school ground was looking green and beautiful, no longer grasses with fence getting longer from only one stand. More so, when we looked at each classroom, all of it looked ready. Well-painted, bulletin boards done, ceiling cleared, classroom structure started and finished in some classrooms, and chairs were well-arranged. We checked the windows and the window glasses; no dust was sticking on our hands. It looked spotless.
Closing Program Tick-tock, tick-tock, it was 3:30 in the afternoon and it was the time for the Closing Program. To formally thank the stakeholders and the volunteers, there was a short program to close the Brigada Eskwela 2018. The stakeholders (students and parents) and volunteers attended because it was this day when the Brigada Eskwela Certificate, and Certificate of Appreciation were released. The Closing Program started with a prayer. Then, it was followed by a closing message for the Brigada Eskwela, the awarding of the certificate to the volunteers, and a Thank You message for them. Through the overwhelming support of the volunteers, the classrooms are restructured and spruced up. All school facilities are now in excellent condition. The school surrounding is now free from tall grasses. Generally, the school is now ready for the school opening.
Conclusion Sometimes years back, we heard the words from the Executive Director of the Adopt-A-School Adopt-A-Schoo l Program, Mari Paul Soriano that goes, “ We cannot afford to fail our youth, we cannot afford to fail our nation.” It was his words when he graced one of the many Brigada Eskwela awarding ceremonies. However, up to now, his words continue to ring as implementers voluntarily and tirelessly pool their resources and efforts. Then, work collectively so that school public utilities utilities are well- set in time for the school school opening this 2018 for our our students. students. Sagurong High School is an avid supporter of this program since its inception in 2004. Now, through the overwhelming support of the volunteers, the classrooms are restructured and spruced up. All school facility are now in excellent condition. The school surrounding is now free from tall grasses. Generally, the school is now ready for the school opening.
The success of the Brigada Eskwela is a proof of the commitment of our stakeholders to improve the learning environment of the school continuously. continuousl y. There is a considerable increase in support from the barangay officials, Local government Unit (LGU) of Pili, Students Supreme Government/Supreme Student Council, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Pantawid Pamilya Pilipino Program (4Ps), Philippine National Police (PNP), business sectors, and other education stakeholders. Even the students of Sagurong High School manifest a new vision as they come to school early to help. The school teaching staff views this as a fresh start to work double to improve the key performance indicators of Sagurong High School.
