1 The 992G uses a revolutionary front linkage design. A one-piece, box-section, steel casting replaces the steel plate lift arms traditionally associated with wheel loaders. This design provides improved viewing of the bucket and represents a substantial vehicle weight savings over a comparable Z-bar linkage, resulting in improved stability, better horsepower-to-weight ratio and improved fuel efficiency. 2 Maintenance-free linkage joints are located at all eight pivot points, are permanently sealed, and offer the advantage of being totally rebuildable. The seals, which retain oil in each maintenance-free linkage joint, have a metal core that helps protect the seal during normal bending and flexing that occurs during loading. Oil provides better protection against pin wear and gauling than grease. The pins do not require service on a daily basis. Seven of the pins have the same diameter, allowing the same bearings and seals to be used through-out.

3 Box-section design of the cast box boom delivers three times the torsional loading strength of the previous design. (With the parallel lift arm design, corner loading the bucket sent stresses up the lift arm, through the cross tube and up the other lift arm. Stresses transferred across the machine through weld joints.) The box-section design spreads stresses over the full length and perimeter of the cast box boom, allowing stress transfer through parent material. This resists twisting and prevents stress paths that can lead to cracking.
Structures Superior design and materials provide superior strength.

Structures on the 992G are more than 90 percent robotically welded. This provides highly consistent welds with deep plate penetration and fusion resulting in increased strength. Structures are designed to help improve visibility, stability, lift height, bucket payload and durability, without adding weight to the machine. These features provide the strength expected in Caterpillar structures. 1 Full box-section frame has been redesigned for maximum strength and minimum weight. The frame is now extended further forward, which improves rail to hitch strength. 2 Tilt cylinder tower has two highstrength steel plates for the tilt cylinder pins. Contoured plates between the two main plates direct stress down to the cast tube. This helps to absorb impact and loading forces. The narrow, box-shaped cylinder tower is designed for improved operator viewing, maximum strength with minimum weight, and resistance to twisting.
3 Upper and lower hitch-pins pivot on double-tapered roller bearings and are shaped to direct stress away from the end of the weld, resulting in a smoother transition of stress loads. The hitch is open for access. 4 Spread-hitch design helps square up the frame and provides more clearance for hydraulic lines. 5 Steering cylinder has been moved up to the front of the outboard frame to increase component clearances and structural strength, while improving serviceability.
Castings in the engine-end frame are used in critical high-stress areas to help spread the load and reduce the number of parts. The casting for the rear trunnion mount also serves as an engine mount, which provides a load path for the weight and torque of the engine to travel down to the trunnion and then on through to the axle. Other castings used in the engine-end frame include: front trunnion mounts, steering cylinder brackets, articulation stops and lock link. Engine and transmission mounts are designed to use mushroom and cupshaped ISO mounts, reducing component vibration and sound levels. The engine mounts directly to the rear cross member, simplifying and improving load transfer structure.
5
Power Train Cat power train delivers top performance and durability in tough applications. The Cat 3508B diesel engine is a fourstroke design and uses long, effective power strokes for more complete fuel combustion and optimum efficiency. The 3508B is designed with high displacement and a low speed rating for long hours of service between scheduled overhauls and lower operating costs. The 30 percent torque rise provides high lugging force during digging and acceleration in high rimpull conditions. The torque curve effectively matches the transmission shift points to provide maximum efficiency and faster cycle times.

1
Unmatched Combustion Efficiency: 1 Electronic Unit Injection is a proven high-pressure, direct injection fuel system. This system electronically monitors operator demands and sensor inputs to optimize engine performance. 2 Deep crater piston and low crevice volume provide a more efficient combustion. 3 Separate Circuit Aftercooling allows the aftercooler circuit to operate cooler than the jacket water temperature for denser air charge and improved combustion. ■ 3508B Electronic Unit Injection has improved specific fuel consumption over the 3412C used in the 992D. ■ Reduced NO and particulate levels. x Advanced Diesel Engine Management system controls the fuel injector solenoids to start and stop fuel injection for greater reliability, automatic altitude compensation and air filter restriction indication. The controller will not let the engine fire until it has oil pressure, acting as a cold start protection and a form of pre-lube.
6
4 Impeller Clutch Torque Converter allows the operator maximum flexibility in modulating rimpull. The first portion of travel of the left brake pedal is used to modulate rimpull from 100 percent (pedal at rest position) to 20 percent of maximum (pedal depressed about 25 mm). After 20 percent of maximum rimpull is achieved, further pedal travel applies the brake. The torque converter with a lock-up clutch is also available as an attachment for fast, fuel efficient load and carry cycles. ■ Allows operator to match rimpull and hydraulics based on operating conditions for maximum productivity. ■ Smooth approach to trucks and hoppers builds operator confidence, producing faster cycle times.
4
Caterpillar planetary, power shift transmission features heavy duty components to handle the toughest jobs. Electronic controls provide smooth shifting to enhance productivity, durability and serviceability. ■ Perimeter-mounted, large diameter clutch packs control inertia for smooth shifting and increased component life.
1
2
Heavy duty axles feature stronger gears and bearings in both the differentials and final drives for increased durability. Permanently lubricated U-joints also improve durability. ■ Larger, shot peened gears and increased bolt capacity improve the durability of the standard differentials. Axle shafts are stronger and feature more splines to help spread the load. ■ Redesigned spindles and final drives reduce the number of parts and greatly improve serviceability, allowing easier access to the Duo-Cone Seals without removing the center housing from the machine. ■ Free-floating axle shafts can be removed independently of the wheels and planetaries for quick and easy serviceability. Axle oil coolers are standard on front and rear axles of the 992G. The system draws oil from the front and rear differentials, circulates the oil through an oil-to-air cooler and returns it to three locations: ■ 25 percent of the oil returns to the right brake ■ 25 percent returns to the left brake ■ 50 percent to the differential
3
Oil-enclosed, multiple-disc brakes feature fewer parts, better heat rejection and improved serviceability. Fully hydraulic actuator circuits improve performance and reliability. ■ Brakes operate on the low torque side of the axle requiring less force. Improved axle oil circulation provides additional cooling to the brake discs. A combination of thicker reaction plates and improved cooling help improve durability. ■ Fewer parts and the location of the brake discs improve serviceability by allowing technicians to remove the spindle, final drive and brake pack as one unit. ■ Independent front and rear circuits use separate dead engine braking accumulators and new valves for increased reliability and performance.

7
Hydraulics Well balanced hydraulics deliver precise low-effort control and trouble-free operation.
Revolutionary electro-hydraulic system uses separate hydraulic circuits for the implement/engine fan and steering/brake control. The benefits of the separate hydraulic systems are increased cooling and elimination of cross-contamination. Low-effort, finger-tip implement control. Armrest-mounted levers send electrical signals to a pilot valve mounted on the loader frame. This moves the sound, heat and effort caused by a hydraulic valve out of the operator’s station. ■ The Electronic Control Module, located in the electronics bay under the right-hand platform, receives signals from the seat-mounted lift and tilt levers in the cab. As the operator moves the levers, electronic sensors combine with position feedback from sensors on the linkage. This determines the level of output to send to the Caterpillar Hydraulic Actuator units on the main implement valve, controlling the lift and tilt functions.
8
Lift and tilt system consists of two piston pumps. ■ The Variable displacement pump is controlled by the Electronic Control Module. A solenoid valve controls the torque setting which allows the Electronic Control Module to vary the hydraulic load felt by the engine – optimizing performance. The implement circuit has increased system pressure and optimized system flow for faster hydraulics and greater lift forces. ■ Fixed displacement hydraulic pump performs with high efficiency and great reliability. For improved serviceability, all hydraulic pumps are mounted on a single pump drive. Load Sensing Steering with STIC Control System is a revolutionary system that integrates steering and transmission into a single controller. The variable displacement pump maximizes machine performance by directing power through the steering system only when needed. ■ Simple side-to-side motions of the operator’s left arm turn the machine right or left. ■ Transmission shifting forward, neutral, reverse is controlled by the operator’s fingers, and gear selection is controlled by the operator’s thumb.
Caterpillar‘s XT-3 and XT-5 hose, O-Ring face seals and large-bore lift and tilt cylinders top off the hydraulic system, delivering the performance and durability owners expect. Reliable components reduce the risk of leaks and blown lines, helping protect the environment. Automatic Ride Control is an optional attachment that helps operators perform better. This system uses a nitrogen/oil accumulator in the hydraulic lift circuit that acts like a shock absorber for the bucket. The cast box boom and bucket response to movement is dampened over rough ground, reducing fore and aft pitch. A smoother, more comfortable ride gives operators the confidence to travel at higher speeds during load and carry, improving cycle times, load retention and component life.
Buckets Caterpillar buckets and Ground Engaging Tools give you the flexibility to match the machine to your application.
