Introduction
Introduction This manual provides installation information for line extender model JLX-7-750P/LC, J LX-6-750P/LC, JL X-7-750P/LC/40, an d J LX-6-750P/LC/40. The asterisk ( ∗), when listed with a model num ber (e.g., ABC- ∗), indicates t ha t th e model has several variations. When an aster isk is used in text, that port ion of th e text perta ins to all var iations of th e model. The complete m odel identificat ion is used when th e text discusses particular model(s).

Description The J LX-∗-750P/LC/ ∗ is a two-way capable line extender, with automatic gain control option, used in CATV distr ibution system s. The J LX-∗-750P/LC/ ∗ is powered by 60 volt ac cable power tha t ma y be passed thr ough th e amplifier to power additiona l line extenders. The un it consists of an amplifier m odule with integral dc power supply an d th e housing a ssembly, model J LX-HSG. The amplifier module is illustr ated in Figur e 1. Figure 2 shows the h ousing assembly.

Introduction
JLX-HSG Housing The housing, model JLX-HSG, is designed for optimum heat dissipation. It includes separa te RF an d weath er gasket s between housing ha lves for efficient shielding and weat her protection. Two clam p assem blies ar e provided on top of th e housing for str an d mount ing. Additional tapped h oles ar e provided at t he r ear of the housing for t he insta llat ion of au xiliary sur face mounting brackets. The RF input a nd outpu t port s are at th e ends of the housing. Two test apert ur es in the h ousing cover provide access to RF input an d outpu t test points on the amplifier module without ha ving to open th e housing. These apert ur es are sealed by thr eaded plugs when not in use.
Amplifier Module The am plifier module is secur ed to th e housing by four sprin g loaded capt ive bolts. The module cover h as a ccess h oles for t he forwar d am plifier GAIN a n d SLOPE controls, INPUT TEST point (forward input/return output), OUTPUT TEST point , B+(24 Vdc) test point , an d 60 Vac test point . Access holes in the amplifier module allow you to tighten the terminal screws on the center conductors of the input an d output coaxial cables without r emoving the module from th e housing. Use a screwdriver with a n insu lated sha ft, if 60 Vac is present on the cable. The a mplifier m odule is shipped from th e factory with diplex filter DF 1-SS in models JLX-∗-750P/LC/SS or diplex filter DF1-SS/40 in models J LX- ∗-750P/LC/40. The am plifier is furnished from th e factory with wire jum pers inser ted in t he r eceptacles for the cable equalizer, model EQ-750- ∗ and attenuator JXP-∗A. The am plifier m odule comes equipped with XO-36 plug-in su rge ar restors a t t he inpu t a nd outpu t. These protect aga inst voltage tra nsients. The plug-in slope control boar d provides a mea ns for corr ecting for cable slope over th e forwar d bandpa ss. The res ponse corrector is used to corr ect overall flatness. Adjustment s can be ma de in th e low, medium, or h igh bands.
Options The CTF-J LX-750 is a plu g-in option wh ich m an ua lly compen sat es for signa l level cha nges in a feederline due to temper atu re cha nges. This un it ma nu ally senses temperat ur e and cha nges the insertion loss an d slope to compensa te for expected cha nges in cable at tenu ation. The insertion loss of this u nit is appr oximately 3.5 dB at r oom t empera tur e. This option is not u sed when the MB-ACB/ ∗ is installed. The block diagram in Figur e 11 illustr at es th e functiona l interconnection of all components an d subassemblies.

The plug-in at tenu ator, model J XP- ∗A is used t o reduce the gain of th e un it, and complements th e gain cont rol of th e amplifier. The plug-in 5 A circuit brea ker , model CBJ -5, or th e CFJ -7A fuse is a u ser option inser ted in t he a mplifier module if th e 60 Vac is to be passed thr ough to the outpu t of the m odule. The forwar d cable equa lizer, Model EQ-750- ∗, is used t o compensa te for cable at tenu ation changes with frequency in the forwar d signa l path. Equa lizers ar e available in 2 dB increm ent s from 2 to 22 dB. Automat ic gain contr ol can be a dded by inst alling th e MB-ACB/ ∗ automatic control board. When th e MB-ACB/ ∗ is insta lled, th e CTF-JLX-750 is not used. The MB-ACB/ ∗ is tuned t o a pilot chan nel and a utomat ically adjusts gain to mainta in a consta nt outpu t level. Two-way service can be implement ed by insta lling the RA-KIT retu rn amplifier kit. The retu rn a mplifier is used to amplify the retu rn signal. Included in th e retu rn a mplifier kit is a selection of return equalizers, model SEE- ∗-∗. These ar e used to compen sat e for cable att enua tion changes with frequen cy in the ret ur n spectrum . A hybrid gain block and two J XP-ZX jumper s ar e also included. Not all items in th e kit will be requir ed. Mount ed to th e bott om of th e amplifier module is a power supply componen t board. The power supply component board conta ins a br idge rectifier an d a switching voltage regulator. The power su pply dc out put voltage is factory preset for + 24 Vdc and m ay be mea sur ed at the + 24 Vdc test point. Alth ough a voltage adjust men t potent iomet er is provided, adjust men t is not norma lly required. The power su pply can operate int o a short circuit indefinitely without sustaining damage.

Bench Testing
Bench Testing We recommen d tha t you test t he J LX- ∗-750P/LC/ ∗ on th e bench to assure that the un it meets all requirement s before insta llation. These tests ar e made with th e line extender configur ed as it is shipped from th e factory, th at is, with jumper s in place of optional a ccessories.
Test Equipment Required The following bench test equipmen t capable of accur ate sweep measu remen ts between 5 an d 750 MHz is requir ed for t estin g th e J LX-7-750P/LC. Sweep generator, with marker generator Oscilloscope Coaxial swit cher Variable attenuators Power In serter , model SSP-PI or equal 60 V power supply Length of 0.500-inch, gas-injected foam -dielectric cable with 8 dB of at ten ua tion at 750 MHz (Comma/Scope PIII 75-500CA or equal) Two F59/cable entry adapter fittings Typical test equipment conn ections ar e shown in Figures 12 and 13. Consult t he instr uction litera tur e for t he test equipment in u se for deta iled operat ing instr uctions.
With the test setup shown in Figures 12 and 13, 60 Vac may be present at coaxial cable connectors and provisions should be made to avoid possible damage to test equipment. 60 Vac will not be present at the output connector if the CBJ-5 circuit breaker is removed. The SSP-PI power inserter input connector may be protected by r emoving the appropriate fuse within the SSP-PI.

Connect the dc voltmeter between the amplifier + 24 Vdc test point (Figure 14) and chass is groun d. The dc outpu t voltage should be + 24 ± 0.40 volts. If th e volta ge is incorr ect, adjustm ent of the dc outpu t voltage is necessary. To adjust t he dc out put voltage, it is necessary to remove the amplifier module from the housing assembly. Proceed as follows: a
Remove power from th e housing assem bly. Loosen th e four spr ing-capt ive bolts holding the am plifier m odule to the housing assembly, and r emove th e module. Remove the cover from t he power su pply section held by four scre ws.

Conn ect t he 60 Vac power su pply to th e am plifier module RF input conn ector J 1 (Figure 14).

With dc voltmet er connected bet ween a mplifier m odule + 24 Vdc test point a nd chassis ground, adjust the potent iometer on th e power supply circuit board for + 2 4 ± 0.4 volts .

Forward Gain and Flatness Testing The a mplifier m odule can be tested in a conventional sweep setu p for checking flatn ess an d gain. Figure 14 may be used to identify th e components a nd th eir location. 1
Conn ect th e J LX-7-750P/ ∗ in a conventional forwa rd sweep setu p, as sh own in Figure 12. Conn ect a short length of coaxial test cable in ser ies with the input.

Apply power. Set sweep frequ ency gener at or to cover frequen cies between 50 MHz and th e upper frequency limit, 750 MHz. Inst all the AGC progra mming plug in the MANUAL position.

Turn forward GAIN cont rol fully clockwise (ma ximum gain). Adjust forwa rd SLOPE control for a flat response. Check for minimu m full gain an d flatn ess per specification.

Rotate GAIN cont rol fully coun terclockwise an d note th e gain r eading at the appropriate upper limit. Then rotat e GAIN control fully clockwise and again note the gain reading at the a ppropriate upper limit. The gain contr ol ran ge should meet or exceed specification.

Installing Options Two-way Option Two-way service may be implemen ted by inst alling the r etu rn a mplifier kit, model RA-KIT. The ret ur n a mplifier kit consists of a h ybrid gain block, and th ree cable equalizers. Not all items in t he kit will be required. The hybrid gain block and one equalizer or equa lizer jumper, as needed, are inst alled in t he locations as sh own in Figur e 14. Special car e must be used when inst alling th e gain block to assur e tha t a ll pins enter th e appropriate sockets on the circu it boar d. Misaligned pins could be dam aged, if ha ndled carelessly. Bend th e groun d lugs on t he circuit boar d over t he h ybrid moun ting holes, and inst all the furn ished screws. Heat sink compound, par t n um ber 663-008-000, or equal, may be u sed between th e hybrid flan ge and th e housing to facilitat e ther ma l conductivity, if it is ava ilable. Hea tsin k compoun d is not furn ished in th e retu rn amplifier kit. Insta ll the two JXP-ZX or a lterna tely JXP-*A pads, as needed, int o the input and outpu t pa d facilities. The inpu t pa d facilities can be used to inject ret ur n sweep signa ls in the field, if it is needed. It can also be used to limit the input signal level to the retu rn a mplifier. The out put pad facility is norma lly used to balance retu rn signal level against other retu rn legs of th e distribution system.

Bench Testing
The r etur n a mplifier ma y be tested by conn ecting th e am plifier t o sweep test equipment as shown in Figur e 13.

Check the gain of the r etur n am plifier at 30 MHz and compar e the resu lts against th e specifications as shown in Appendix A.
This completes the testing of the retu rn am plifier.
Automatic Gain Control To insta ll the MB-ACB/ ∗ au toma tic gain cont rol option, rem ove the module cover. Figur e 14 or th e amplifier cover illust ra tes th e proper locat ion. Inst all the MB-ACB/ ∗ boar d by pressing the boar d firm ly int o th e socket. Car e should be exercised to avoid bending of th e conn ecting pins. Set th e AGC program ming plug to the AGC position. This completes t he MB-ACB/ ∗ inst allat ion. Testin g of th e unit is more easily accomplished after field inst allat ion, an d ther efore a pr ocedure is not given.
Accessories The CTF-J LX-750 th erma l contr ol boar d can be inserted at the inpu t position. The CTF-JLX-750 is not used wh en t he MB-ACB/ ∗ option is inst alled. A CBJ-5 circuit brea ker or CFJ -7A fuse is insta lled to pass power from t he RF input port to the outpu t. Refer to Figure 14 for t he location a nd consult system dr awings for t he r equirement s.

Strand/Pedestal Mounting The housing assembly JLX-HSG is equipped with two clamp assemblies for suspension on the stra nd. Where greater cleara nce is required, auxiliary han ger bra ckets may be substitut ed an d the clamp assemblies tr ansferred from the housing to th e brackets. Insta lling the am plifier on the strand follows: 1
Remove the ac power from th e cable on wh ich the h ousing is to be insta lled.

Loosen the bolts on the strand clamps 3/16 inch.

Open th e housing using a 7/16 inch n ut driver to loosen t he six captive bolts th at engage the flan ges on th e housing cover.

Loosen t he t wo termina l screws in the housing platform s enough t o allow ent ry of th e cable center condu ctors. (Access to the tw o ter min al screws is provided by holes in the a mplifier cover.)

Remove the cap plugs from the cable port s in the housing. Insta ll an en tr y adapter fitting in each port. Make sure the threads are clean. Han d tighten, then wrench tighten the body of each conn ector; consult t he in str uction sheet for t he fittin g to find th e proper torque. Tempora rily close the housin g; slight engagem ent of th e top center bolt is sufficient.

Take the housing up to the str an d and engage the str an d wire in the clamp assemblies. The clamps will open when forced ont o th e stra nd. Tight en th e clamp bolts far en ough t o keep th e housing on th e str an d while permitt ing the housing to be moved freely for proper positioning. One tu rn of th e clam p bolts should be enough.

Pr epare t he coaxial cable ends as required by th e type of conn ectors u sed. The center conductor should be exposed to a length of 1-3/8 inches (or the adapter pin should have that length). If heat-shrink tubing is to be used to protect the connection, it should be slipped over th e cable before the conn ector is inst alled. One cable end should be conn ected complet ely before conn ecting th e second ca ble end.

Secur e the cable end in t he cable conn ector a s described in the inst ru ction sh eet for t he conn ector. Tighten th e term inal screw onto the cable center condu ctor a nd torque to 10-12 in-lb.
10 Repeat th e conn ector installation with t he second cable end. 11 Pr otect both cable conn ections with heat -shr ink ta pe or tu bing. 12 Position t he h ousing so th e customa ry expan sion loops can be form ed on the coaxial cables. Hand tighten, th en wrench tighten t he bolts on t he stra nd clamps.

13 Lash th e cables to the str and wh ere they approach t he str and a nd secure the cable lashing wire to the str and with commer cial clamps. 14 Restore t he a c power t o the cable.
For pedestal mounting, use th e clamp bolts th rough appr opriate h oles in t he pedestal mount ing plate for securing th e housing at the tapped h oles provided in t he back of the housing.
Adjustments Manual Thermal Gain Control After th e am plifier h as been in stalled and service ha s been r estored on t he cable system, allow a h alf hour or m ore t o stabilize th e temper atu re, th en open the h ousing an d do the following: 1
Check the ac input voltage at th e 60 Vac test point. It mu st be greater t han 38 V rm s as measu red with a t ru e rms voltmet er. Check the B+ voltage at th e + 24 Vdc test point; it should be 24 V, ± 0.4 V.

Check th e position of th e AGC progra mm ing plug. It should be in the (Refer t o the legend on t he cover.)

Conn ect a signa l level meter to the forwa rd OUTPUT TEST point on the amplifier module. It should be noted tha t th e test point level will be 30 dB below th e actua l out put level. Rota te th e slope cont rol fully coun ter clockwise, then clockwise to increas e th e chan nel 2 signal level by 2 to 3 dB.

Check the a mplifier output tilt by compar ing the cha nn el 2 signal level to the h igh end level. The tilt should conform to th e opera tional tilt of th e system. If th e tilt is great er th an desired, replace th e forwa rd equa lizer with a lower value, and conversely, if the t ilt is less than desired, replace the equalizer with a h igher value.

Tune t he signal level meter to the h igh end chann el, and t ur n th e gain contr ol fully clockwise. Reduce th e GAIN cont rol to obta in the desired outpu t level. If th e GAIN control mu st be tu rn ed down by more tha n 3 dB, replace the J XP-ZX with a J XP-* of appropriate value to allow the GAIN cont rol to be positioned n ear fully clockwise to achieve th e desired output.

Confirm tha t signal is present a t th e input, part icular ly the pilot chan nel must be present . Conn ect a signa l level meter t o the OUTPUT TEST point.

Tune t he signal level meter to cha nn el 2. Turn the slope contr ol on t he a mplifier fully coun ter clockwise, then clockwise to increase t he cha nn el 2 signal level by 2 to 3 dB.

Check the a mplifier output tilt by compar ing the cha nn el 2 signal level to the h igh end level. It should conform to th e opera tional tilt of th e system. If th e tilt is less th an desir ed, replace the equalizer with a h igher value.

Tune t he signal level meter t o the h igh en d chann el of the system. The signal level should be the desired operat iona l level, plus t he r equired gain r eserve for the existing am bient tempera tur e. Refer to Table 1 to find th e proper gain reserve for th e present temper atu re. For example: If the desired opera ting level of the high en d chann el is + 44 dBmV and t he ambient temperatur e is 70 ° F, th e gain r eser ve accordin g to Table 1 is 3 dB (44 plus 3 equals 47 dBmV). If th e level is great er th an deter mined, insta ll th e appropriate J XP- ∗ pa d to bring it to within 1 dB of the r equir ed level.
