Acetylene cutting torches are used for cutting metal. The oxy-fuel cutting process combines both an oxygen source and a gas source. In this case, acetylene gas is used. Oxy Fuel Cutting

Oxy fuel cutting incorporates the use of pure oxygen with steel to create what is called iron oxide. Flames are used to heat the steel to a very high temperature, approximately 1800 F, at which time pure oxygen is applied in a constant stream and this creates the cut. This is a perfect example of how one element combines with another to form something else. For example: oxygen, heat and steel mix to form iron oxide. Only certain metals can be cut using this method. This is normally metals with oxides that have a lower melting point than that of the base metal. Oxy fuel cutting also requires a use of some sort of a gas to help with the preheat flame. In most cases Acetylene gas is what is commonly used. Other gases that can be used are propane, natural gas, Methyl Acetylene type, hydrogen, liquefied petroleum gas and Propylene. Oxy fuel cutting requires the use of a cutting torch. This torch is different than that of a welding torch. To begin with, the oxygen must be applied at just the right flow rate and in a steady stream to help make a more perfect cut. If you apply to little of an amount of oxygen, it will make a slow, jagged cut. If you apply too much oxygen, not only will you waste the oxygen but you will make a wide concave cut. The plasma torch is made up of three tubes that are usually made from quartz. These three tubes are known as the sample injector, the outer tube and the middle tube.
