Bodhidharma (A.D.520) went to China from Kandhipuram Kandhipu ram (Kanchi) to spread Buddhism. He stayed at the Shaolin monastery and preached Buddhist ideologies. At that that time he trained the local people in in the art of Varmakkalai. This is recorded in their book. book . This art underwent many changes and came to be known as Shaolin boxing (Shorinji Kempo) or Wu-Shu. The Chinese and Japanese schools of this art agree with 108 Varmam points. At present this art is spreading among our people.

Therefore 3 nadis x 4 varmams= 12 varmams. 12 Seats: These twelve varmams form the twelve seats of uyirkalai and udarkalai. Hence they are called 12 ‘Padu Varmam’. The word ‘Padu’ means ‘lethal’.
