Malaria and Dengue are only two of the serious diseases here in the Philippines especially in our municipality. They used the oregano because except from it is effective on relieving cough it is known too because of getting rid on all known insects like mosquitoes and other insects. Also, they used garlic because it is easy to get and the researchers find some backgrounds about the effectiveness of garlic. A. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM This study seeks the possibility of Oregano and Garlic Extract as Mosquito Spray Repellent. This study aims to ‘Determine the effectiveness of Oregano and Garlic extracts as a Mosquito Spray Repellent’ and ‘determine the reliability of the Mosquito Spray Repellent.’ B. HYPOTHESIS

Chapter II REVIEW OR RELATED LITERATURE OF THE STUDY There is a long history of using GARLIC to get rid of many insects, from slug to mosquito. In particular, garlic has a reputation for protecting people from mosquito bites. Garlic is more effective at repelling some species of mosquito than others. Whatever the mechanism, garlic's ability to repel a variety of pests has been proven scientifically. Its effect against mosquitoes specifically is less well documented however there is much anecdotal evidence to support it. If you wish to protect an entire area such as your garden, you could treat it with one of the commercially available garlic based sprays you can buy. For individuals, study have shown that coating the body with a jelly based compound including garlic can keep mosquitoes away for some time. Obviously such a method, whilst effective against bites, has fairly major social side effects! (Warning: the allicin in garlic is very strong and can result in skin problems and allergic reactions. Consult your doctor) Fortunately, you probably don't have to go that far. There is strong anecdotal evidence that simply consuming more garlic can help to prevent mosquito bites. So garlic might help deter mosquitoes - but it won't stop them. Garlic bulbs contain an amino acid that converts to a substance called allicin when crushed, blended or chopped. The characteristic odor released as a result of this process has powerful properties. “When garlic extract is absorbed by a plant, biochemical changes take place in its foliage which cause it to actively repel insects,” says Parker, “In short, plants are provided with a long-lasting case of ‘garlic breathe’ that causes insects to move elsewhere. This article is based on the research of (Garlic as a Natural Mosquito Repellent/ Garlic Central/ 2014) and (Use Garlic to Naturally Repel Mosquitoes and Treat West Nile Virus/ NaturalNews/ July 2013).

OREGANO contains carvacrol, a natural insect repellent. Repelling mosquitoes does not have to mean using harsh chemicals on your skin or your belongings. You can use a natural mosquito repellent, like oil of oregano, instead. Oil of oregano contains a compound called carvacrol, which acts to repel insects. Carvacrol is found in other natural insect repellents that are effective against mosquitoes, including mint and thyme. You can purchase oil of oregano at health food stores or create your own by pouring a pint of boiling water over a cup of chopped fresh oregano and letting the mixture sit for several hours. Place a few drops of oil of oregano on outdoor furniture to keep mosquitoes away when you are outside. Strain the homemade oregano mixture into a spray bottle and sprits down pets to protect them from mosquitoes. Add a few drops of oil of oregano to soaps and shampoos to add mosquito repellent to your normal bathing routine during the worst of mosquito season. If you do not like the scent of oregano, then using oil of oregano as a mosquito repellent will not be pleasant. The oil concentrates the odour and makes it more potent than found in the plant. You might be better off using a different natural repellent, like citrus or rose geranium oil. This article is based from the research of (Oregano: Health Benefits, Side Effects/ MNT/ September 2015)_ In the Philippines, dengue is reported as a leading cause of childhood hospitalisations.1By September 2011, the disease had already resulted in 285 deaths of children between 1 and 9 years of age2 (Table 1). Fatalities for the 1–9 years-of-age cohort accounted for nearly 60% of deaths due to dengue in 2011, which highlights the importance of early vaccination for young children in endemic regions when a vaccine becomes available. As a mother and doctor, I have personally experienced the impact that dengue has on the family. When my son contracted dengue, he reached his second day (the critical phase for the risk of haemorrhage) without fever, but still experienced a significantly decreased white blood count and an alarmingly low platelet count. Fortunately, the infection did not result in hypotensive shock or haemorrhage and my son made a full recovery. However, the scenario that unfolded is typical of many families in the Philippines and other dengue endemic areas. This issue will focus on the epidemiology of dengue in children, current surveillance systems and national efforts to stop mosquitoes from spreading. The introduction of a vaccine will be essential to control the spread of infection that can have devastating consequences in both children and adults.

Chapter III METHODOLOGY A. PROCEDURE In making this Mosquito Spray Repellent, the researchers extract Oregano leaves (20 pieces). Then filter it by using a strainer and put it on a small cup after the extracting process. They also extract Garlic bulb (1 piece) using mortar and pestle. After extracting, they filter it and put it on another small cup. On the next part, the researchers put the two said extracts in the same can. They stir it well until the oregano and the garlic extract is equally distributed. After mixing the researchers put the mixed extracts on a spray bottle and keep it on a dry place.

B. Observation about the study When the researchers get the extract of the oregano using the mortar and pestle, they observe that it is easy to get because the OREGANO have a smooth physical appearance that made the leaves to make or to have more extracts. And based on the researchers the extract is color green and it is just like thin liquid ( malabnaw ). In the other side, when the researchers extract the garlic using the mortar and pestle, the final extract of the garlic is color yellowish brown and the texture is gooey liquid (malapot). Moreover, when the researchers combine the extracts of garlic and oregano, they observed that it was easy to stir.

Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3
Near the garbage Near the clothes In the garden
15 mins. 19 mins. 22 mins
In Trial 1, it shows that here are only small amount of mosquitoes died near the garbage.
And maybe it’s because of the number of amount of the extracts they mix in the said Spray. In Trial 2, it shows that most of the mosquitoes in the garbage died because of its appearance
and number of extracts. In Trial 3, it shows that the Spray is effective for the mosquitoes went away from the garbage for a longer period of time.
