Most adjustments are performed just once by the installation specialists. If you are a user of the solar heating system, don't be put off by the length of these instructions! The first part of the booklet contains all the information needed to operate the controller. You will soon see just how simple and logical it is to use. The comprehensive second part which is marked with "For installation personnel only" and a red stripe, contains all information which is necessary for the installation and start-up of the heating system by qualified personnel.

Danger The controller is electrically operated. Improper installation or attempted repair can cause a life-threatening electric shock hazard. Installation and commissioning must be performed only by adequately qualified specialist personnel. It is forbidden to open the device or auxiliary components with the exception of the terminal cover. Repairs may be carried out only by the manufacturer. Your solar storage heater controller
2.1
What your solar storage heater controller does
When correctly programmed and used in conjunction with an appropriate hydraulic circuit, the controller helps make the most of incident solar energy. This can make a conventional boiler unnecessary.
2.2
User adjustments
The front-panel controls allow you, as user, to do the following: • "Select operating mode (without access code)" (page 14) • "Read temperatures and values, change regular display (access code 1)" (page 17) • "Test outputs or include them in the regular display (access code 1)" (page 19) All other adjustments may be performed only by qualified personnel. Improper adjustment can lead to malfunctioning of the solar heating system, or a reduction in operating life.
2.3
Parameters/access code protection
Parameters are values that may be modified or included in the regular display, or functions that may be activated/deactivated. The range of possible adjustments is divided into 3 authorization categories: Category Authorization required to modify

Display
The regular display is recognisable by the four items with a dotted line running across the middle. The first three lines show temperatures, values, or output switching states. the fourth line shows the current operating mode. In manual mode, blinking arrows at the left and right, next to manual, warn of incorrect operation.

In the event of a fault, auto alternates with Err. There is a list of display abbreviations and their meanings in the section "19 Explanation of terms and abbreviations", on page 49. If you have changed to another display, the controller always reverts to the regular display after a two-minute timeout interval. A menu contains just text, without the dotted line.

Select operating mode (without access code)
The operating mode affects overall controller behaviour. auto

Automatic operation according to the set parameters. This is the most energy-efficient mode. In manual operation, you can switch all the outputs on and off "by hand" from the "test or adopt outputs" menu. This mode is intended for emergency use only. WARNING! The system is switched off. Before switching the system off, be sure to perform all system-specific safety measures (e.g. drain the system) to avoid damage while the system is shut off.
The manufacturer’s safety regulations must be observed at all times. •

Modifying settings (access code 2)
This is where you adjust the controller to the system characteristics. You must enter the access code before making any changes. If you just want to inspect the options and parameters, you can scroll through the submenus without entering an access code. An overview of the options and parameters is given under "18 Settings with access code 2", on page 45. Example: Modify differential on. •

Test outputs or include them in the regular display (access code 1)
Here you can check the current switching state of the controller outputs. (See also "4.1 Enduser parameters (no access code required)", on page 15. You can also turn an output on or off to verify its function (set the controller to manual mode before doing this). The outputs remain in whatever states you left them, even after you exit the submenu. They change only in response to a further explicit command, or when you change the controller's operating mode. The current switching state can be included in the regular display (requires access code 1). Example: Output solar pump PS including in the regular display. •

Here you can enable/disable additional functions related to the hydraulic system used by a specific solar heater (access code 2 required). Parameters associated with the selected functions can then be monitored under the read temp. and values menu; any additional function settings can be adjusted under adjust paramet. settings. Fault display (access code 2)
If the controller detects a fault condition, the mode indicator in the controller display alternates between auto and Err. To determine the cause, go to the fault code submenu and check the number that appears there. Fault codes are described at the end of this section. Once the problem is fixed and the fault condition resolved, the controller resumes normal operation. However, the fault display remains and can only be cleared using access code 2. Resetting the controller clears all fault codes associated with earlier malfunctions. Display fault code: •

Description of functions
After you have chosen the hydraulic variant correct for your heating system from the list in chapter "15.3 Hydraulic variants", page 37, you will find a description of possible functions given in the following.
10.1
Collector minimum temperature
In order for solar charging to be enabled, the collector temperature TKO must be above this set value. The "minimum collect. temp." limiting value is set to a switching hysteresis of -5K. (Example: collector min. 20 °C, enabled at 20 °C; disabled at 15 °C.)

Solar charging without return flow sensor for DHW tank, storage tank or swimming pool
Enabling of the solar pump PS takes place when the difference in temperature between the collector sensor TKO and the consumer sensor (TBU, TPU, TSB) is larger as the defined set value "differ on". The solar pump is switched off if the difference in temperature between the collector sensor and the consumer sensor (TBU, TPU, TSB) is smaller than the defined set value "differ off" or if a maximum or set temperature by the consuming units or collector is exceeded. Using speed control (revs) it is attempted to maintain a minimum temperature difference at the collector sensor (TKO, TKO2). The value Xs for the speed control is calculated using following formula: Xs TKO-DHW tank

10.4
Legionella protection function
According to the DIN DVGW worksheet W 551 for DHW tanks. This function is fully integrated and switches the output 5 on for maximum 2 hours every 24 hours at around 10.00 p.m. If the TBU has not reached the pre-set legionella temperature "legion. temp." within the 24 hours the pump PSZ is switched on at 10.00 p.m. If the "external DHW tank" option is activated and, therefore, energy management of a compatible heating controller is available, the heat generator is switched on in addition to pump PSZ. If the set "legion. temp." is reached before the end of the 2 hour time period, the function is satisfied and the circulation pump PSZ is switched off again. If this function is present, the time can be changed and controlled under "adjust. paramet. settings" without use of an access code. If the pre-determined "legion. temp." value is set to 0, the function is de-activated.
10.5
Bypass function
The following conditions must be fulfilled for the bypass valve UBY to switch over to the consumer circuit DHW tank or storage tank (on). The bypass temperature TBY is higher than the temperature at the consumer sensor TBU/TPU + differ off + 2K and the solar pump PS is enabled. The bypass valve UBY switches back to the collector circuit if the bypass temperature TBY is lower than the temperature at the consumer sensor TBU/TPU + differ off or when the solar pump PS is disabled.

10.6
Consumer cascade (DHW tank, storage tank, swimming pool)

Based on the solar input, the controller distinguish whether the consumers have to be charged to temperature or to energy. The priorities for charging the consumers units can be defined with the selection "priority solar charging". 10.6.1 Charging to energy This charging mode is used if only a small amount of solar energy is available and becomes operational when the following conditions are given. The average speed (revs) PSm of the solar pump PS increases but still remains less than 80%, or the average speed PSm of the solar pump PS sinks below 70%. In the case the DHW tank/storage tank with the lowest temperature, and not reached set value, will be charged first. First, the DHW tank/storage tank units are brought to the same temperature, then the DHW tank is heated by 5K. If the temperature at the sensor TBU is increased by +5K the storage tank TPU is enabled. This continues until DHW tank/storage tank has reached its set value. The swimming pool TSB is then charged. If the set value is reached, the charge is passed to the DHW tank until the pre-determined DHW tank maximum value is exceeded. If more energy is still available the storage tank is then charged up to the set maximum value. 10.6.2 Charging to temperature This charging mode is used when large amounts of solar energy are available. It becomes operational when the following conditions are given. The average speed PSm of the solar pump PS increases and is greater than 80%, or the average speed PSm of the solar pump PS sinks but remains above 70%. Depending on the priorities selected, the single consumer units are charged one after another until they reach their set values. If more energy is still available, DHW tank and storage tank are then charged up to their set maximum values. 10.6.3 Order of charging of the consumer units A choice of four different charging sequences is available. If one of the given consumer units is not available the next will be automatically chosen: •

10.7
Frost protection function
The controller has a frost protection function. If the temperature at the collector sensor TKO falls below the frost limit selected, the solar pump PS is switched on at its lowest speed. If the temperature at TKO increases to 3 K above the set frost limit the pump is switched off. Note: This setting cannot be changed via the operating structure. The factory setting is -50 °C.
10.8
Auxiliary boiler function
The solar controller has four different auxiliary boiler functions. 10.8.1 Auxiliary boiler minimum temperature For the auxiliary boiler to be released, the temperature in this boiler TFK must be higher than the set value. The minimum temperature limiting value minimum aux.b. temp. has a switching hysteresis of -5 K. (Example: auxiliary boiler min. temp. 30 °C; enabled at 30 °C, disabled at 25 °C).

A minimal charging temperature difference at sensor TFK is maintained by speed regulation. Release of the aux. boiler circulation pump PFK due to the increase in temperature at the sensor TFK If the increase in temperature in the auxiliary boiler is sufficient, the aux. boiler pump PFK is switched on even though the boiler temperature is less than the "minimum aux. b. temp." and the difference in temperature between TPU and TFK is not sufficient. Over a continual period of 10 minutes, an average value is taken from the actual auxiliary boiler temperature TFK. If the increase in aux. boiler temperature at sensor TFK is higher than calculated average value by the value "aux.b. temp. increase x 5 K", PFK is switched on for a period of 10 minutes at minimum speed. If, after 10 minutes, the criteria, aux. boiler temp. min. and difference in temperature between auxiliary boiler sensor TFK and storage tank sensor TPU are fulfilled, the aux. boiler circulation pump PFK remains switched on.

The aux. boiler circulation pump PFK may also be enabled due to the increase in temperature at the auxiliary boiler sensor TFK. See "10.8.4" for details. In both cases, with an activated pump PFK, the 3-point mixing valve MR is used to try and reach and maintain the minimum temperature, minimum aux.b. temp. at the sensor TFR. The mixing valve is set with a p-band of ± 5 K.
10.9
Cooling down function
If the temperature at the top DHW tank sensor TBO or top storage tank sensor TPO rises to 3K above the set DHW tank or storage tank maximum value, the pump PRK is switched on. The pump PRK is switched off when the temperature at sensor TBO or TPO falls below the set DHW tank or storage tank maximum value. If the sensors TBO or TPO are not available, the temperatures at sensor TBU or TPU are used to control this cooling-down function.

Options
Depending on the hydraulic variant chosen (refer to "15.3 Hydraulic variants", page 37), only the options available for selection are displayed and can be selected.
11.1
External DHW tank
For installation personnel only
If the option "yes" is chosen the solar controller may be operated over an eBUS with a compatible heating controller and economical use of energy for after-heating of the DHW tank can be ensured. The DHW tank sensor must be connected to the heating controller. The "DHW tank set value" and the "minimum DHW tank temperature" are adjusted on the heating controller. The two settings "DHW tank temp. setting" and "maximum DHW tank temp." in the solar controller do not have any function and are not displayed. The bottom DHW tank sensor TBU and the top DHW tank sensor TBO are also not displayed. The DHW tank set value will be set to the adjustable "minimal DHW tank temperature" for after-heating when a good solar yield (average revolutions of the solar pump PSm above 50 %) is available. This reduction is removed when the average revs PSm of the solar pump are below 50 %. The after-heating is set to minimum DHW tank temperature for 18 hours if the "DHW tank set temperature" is reached with solar energy and the average revolutions of the solar pump PSm drop below 80 % or the DHW tank temperature falls below the set value. This reduction is de-activated by a reset or power failure to the controller. Note: If there is selected a hydraulic variant with auxiliary boiler function and the auxiliary boiler pump PFK is switched on, the DHW tank set value is switched to DHW tank minimal temperature.
11.2
External storage tank
If the option "yes" is chosen the solar controller may be operated over an eBUS with a compatible heating controller and economical use of energy for after-heating of the DHW tank can be ensured. The storage tank sensor must be connected to the heating controller. The size in reduction of the set value is adjusted on the heating controller. The two settings "tank temp. settings" and "maximum tank temp." in the solar controller do not have any function and are not displayed. The bottom storage tank sensors TPU and the top storage tank TPO are also not displayed. 30

The reduction is de-activated if the average revolutions PSm of the solar pump PS drop below 50 %. The storage tank set value is continually calculated by the heating controller. The degree of reduction of the set value is adjusted on the heating controller Note: If a variant with auxiliary boiler function is selected and the aux. boiler pump PFK is activated, the reduction in storage tank set value becomes activated.

If the TBO or TPO sensors are connected, this takes the function of overheating protection, otherwise the TBU or TPU sensors perform this function. If the TKO rises above 110 °C, the solar pump is switched on with lowest power (even when DHW or storage tank maximum has been reached) and, using speed control, attempts to maintain the collector temperature at 110 °C. If the TKO increases to above 130 °C the pump is disabled. The pump is also disabled if the TKO sinks below 100 °C (if DHW or storage tank maximum has been reached). At the DHW storage tank protection threshold temperature of 95 °C the pump PS is always disabled and then re-enabled when the DHW storage tank temperature sinks below 93 °C. Priority overheating protection: If overheating of the collector occurs, the heat is passed to the available heat consumption units DHW tank, storage tank or swimmingpool. As a rule, a fixed order for allocation is defined in the controller. Swimming pool-storage tank-DHW tank. The first available consumption unit is compelled to accept the heat.

Flowmeter pulse counter
If this selector is activated a flow meter with pulse output VIG and return flow sensor TKR must be connected to the controller. The performance calculation of the solar output is now made on the basis of the difference in temperature between the collector sensor TKO and the return sensor TKR, the flow volume recorded VIG and the selected heating capacity of the heat transfer medium.
11.5
Collector flow sensor
If this option is activated, the difference in temperature between collector flow and collector return flow is used to determine the performance output. The collector flow sensor disables the solar pump at a temperature above of 105 °C.

11.6
Radiation sensor (heat sensor)
Activation of this function allows the solar unit to be enabled for a period of 2 minutes following a defined increase in temperature (1 K/min.) or the minimum radiation temperature (30 °C) at the radiation sensor TST. If circulation at the collector sensor TKO still gives the enabling criteria, the solar pump PS remains operational. If the enabling criteria are not given, the solar pump PS is disabled again. If the increase in temperature at the radiation sensor TST remains given or the temperature is higher than the minimum radiation temperature, the solar pump PS is enabled again after 5 minutes. The setting "radiation min./temp. increase/ switch-on and waiting time" cannot be adjusted via the operating system.

Using the solar remote display FD 5411 it is possible to display the temperatures and values of the chosen hydraulic variants. The communication/supply to the remote display is carried out via eBUS.

Installation
15.1
Installation and set-up instructions
Before putting the controller into operation, check all electrical connections to the various system components. It may be necessary to electrically suppress strongly inductive loads in the vicinity of the controller (contactors, solenoid-operated valves, etc.). This can be done by connecting RC circuit directly to the coil terminals of the disturbing components. Recommended RC circuit: 0.047µF, 100Ω, rated at 250 VAC (e.g. Bosch, RIFA, etc.).

Electrical installation and fuse protection must comply with local regulations. The solar controller must be powered continuously, to ensure operation at all times. Upstream switchgear should therefore be limited to emergency or main switches that are permanently "on".

Mounting instructions
1. Drill the three mounting holes (Use drill stencil at the last page of this operating instructions). 2. Fit the upper screw and hang the controller from it. 3. Remove the connector strip cover by loosening the securing screws. 4. Drive the two lower mounting screws fully home. You can now begin wiring up the controller.
