Flexi Zone Solution Flexi Zone is the most cost effective and highest performing solution for adding capacity to existing macro networks, using an underlay of coordinated small cell clusters. Flexi Zone uses LTE (& optional Wi-Fi) to offload, add capacity, and boost subscriber experiences in both the indoor (public/enterprise) and outdoor hot zone environments within a heterogeneous network. The award-winning Flexi Zone features a novel zone-based architecture comprised of multiple low power access points coordinated by a localized zone controller that enables the operators to offer very high user experience while offloading unwanted data traffic from their macro & core networks. As operators continue to deploy LTE networks, they are realizing the need to provide better coverage and improve the capacity, especially within buildings where most of the data is consumed. The NSN Flexi Zone Indoor Pico BTS allows mobile operators to deliver on both of these needs using a compact and discrete fully 3GPP compliant solution. With the deployment of LTE small cell technologies, mobile operators are not only able to service the continuously increasing number of mobile users, but also to provide users with the bandwidth they need to truly utilize mobile devices to enhance their productivity. Adoption of LTE by enterprises can bring seamless, ubiquitous access to enterprise applications by enhancing the connectivity and productivity of mobile employees, reducing latency, and bringing significant improvements in business processes and customer service. Small cells will play a critical role in providing operators a solution which can be easily and quickly deployed in strategic locations to add coverage and capacity.
Flexi Zone Indoor Pico can use buildings existing and shared Ethernet cabling for backhaul significantly slashing upfront deployment cost compared to traditional, hybrid or CAT based DAS systems. The Flexi Zone Indoor Pico can be powered via a PoE based solution also reducing deployment complexity, reducing cost of ownership and leading to faster deployments.

Flexi Zone Indoor Pico BTS “Macro like” processing power allows the use of the same software as NSN’s macro base stations making them very easy to integrate into Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets). Operators can enjoy identical features available in macro cells, such as easy software upgrade to LTE-Advanced and support by the same NetAct Operations and Support System (OSS) & iSON. In addition, the Flexi Zone Indoor Pico runs on the same industry acclaimed Smart Scheduler1 and associated interference mitigation capabilities, bringing the highest subscriber performance in all indoor locations.
The Flexi Zone Indoor Pico BTS can be operated stand-alone initially and then evolved via software upgrade into a full Flexi Zone architecture as hot spots grow into hot zones or to support larger and very large deployments. This enables operators to scale up capacity & grow coverage virtually without limit and with limited network impact to deliver a superior customer experience while leveraging the small cell installed base.
Multi Radio Access / Multi Technology (RAT) Flexi Zone Indoor Pico BTS supports LTE and Wi-Fi access thanks to an optional Wi-Fi module; all integrated within a single compact form factor allowing for reduced number of boxes and shared services (i.e., power, backhaul, etc). Flexi Zone Indoor Pico BTS supports a single band 2Tx2RxMIMO (LTE-A capable) LTE module & an integrated Wi-Fi access module based on carrier-grade hardware. It incorporates dual band compact Wi-Fi 2Tx2Rx MIMO 801.11ac/b/g/n/a radios that supports centralized authentication and policy management via a RADIUS AAA server or a Wi-Fi controller.

Deployment and operation of complex heterogeneous networks requires all involved network entities to be efficiently well configured with respect to their particular role and location within the network, and to be context-aware. The Flexi Zone Indoor Pico supports the fully automated “Plug-andplay” configuration crucial to reduce network implementation and operational costs in heterogeneous networks. Integrated Bluetooth functionality in the Flexi Zone Indoor Pico BTS supports remote troubleshooting using the Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) No Touch Troubleshooting handheld application.
Design and Capabilities The Flexi Zone Indoor Pico BTS features a compact single enclosure, designed for ‘Light’ installations, whether they are ceiling or wall mounted. The advanced modular design enables a faster time to market for the many variations of technology and bands expected for indoor small cell deployments. An integrated RF-GPS receiver provides for synchronization when 1588v2 is not available or planned. The Flexi Zone Indoor Pico is the industry smallest LTE BTS offering the greatest flexibility of deployment, highest capacity and lowest cost of ownership to the operator.
