ALICE V So, let’s begin by giving the people a little background as to who you are, where you’ve been, what you’ve done and what you’re going to do? Hi, my name is Alice. I started composing music at the age of about 6. I never took formal lessons, playing piano was well, just ‘play’ to me. It came very easily and naturally. I would write a mini-musical, and enroll my friends as performers. My Father was very patient throughout this ;). So music is something I was born to do. However, what happened next, was life.. and all its wonderful lessons and lashings.. which cracked and carved away at me the child until she disappeared.. almost completely.. Something always returns me to songwriting. I have been working on my new songs for the last year or so, and they are my focus, moving forward is the most important thing right now, with so much already “done” ( studios videos stage shows, and the releasing

of my debut album with my previous band) I want the challenge of exclusively writing my own material, and ‘getting it out their .. I think any creative will have to be honest and say, the need to share our art is very, very strong.. As a growing artist, what have you done that stood out the most for you personally? Well, probably overcoming my own insecurities.. Its so damn hard to like ourselves! Why is that! Anyway, I’m a sensitive beast, and I tend to be hard on myself and my own worst enemy, so for me, to be able to say to myself “NO!” and not let anything take my focus, is something that stands out for me personally. What inspires you to create the music that you currently produce? Ok, honestly, I love the dark stuff :) Death and Romance, lust to dust, that kind of thing.. I’m a girl! My “happy place “ is a cemetery, its beautiful, and peaceful, and majestic and sad.. and that is also how I would describe my music at times.. so my songs are an extension of my emotions, and life lessons and dreams. Don’t ask for the list of bands I like.. we don’t have all day! Most of us musicians in Cape Town know it’s hard to break into the music industry, especially when there’s hardly any support from radio stations. What is your opinion on the state of our music industry? Crap. Saturated with mainstream rubbish. And that’s about all I know because I turn it off. As for local talent, it’s clear we have talent in buckets, but it always comes down to money.. how long can an artist afford to put his/her heart and soul into an empty wallet? But if like me, it’s what your purpose is, well then like me, it’s not all about financial success anyway.. so I’ll be another poor artist, and I’ll write a song about it. Who would your music mostly appeal to? Everyone! Kids, babies, firemen, lumberjacks, Sergio Peris-Mencheta...;) You also do photography, tell us a little bit more about what you shoot, and does it influence your music as well? Yes, I would say my pictures are similar to my

music in that I like emotive qualities. I am half of the Sumografika team, we have our own photography studio and have been going for 6 years. We shoot magazine covers, Cars, Models.. you really just have to go and see the pictures!!! Can we expect any live performances from you in the near future? Sure! It’s always in the back of my mind, but no firm plans yet, I’m more keen to get more videos out, to put the vision and the vocals with the songs, bring it all together and show it to the world. Any last words? Look out for me at the upcoming Gasdance Party...

BELCHER
“...(My) Photography is not about technique. It’s about soul...” Ronnie Belcher
Tell us about your productions and what got you into film and photography? I am one of the founding members of BlackMilk Productions, a Cape Town based independent film company. Both film and photography has always resonated with me, so it was a natural progression to practice these arts. Looking at some of your productions, you have quite a distinct look to your work. What made you decide to take a darker route? I love symbolism, surrealism, expressionism and grew up watching horror films – so portraying a story via ‘darker’ genres forms part of who I am. Tell us a little bit more about your involvement with Terminatryx? I have known Paul and Sonja (Terminatryx founding members) for many years. In 2003 they asked me to join the band on a national tour and

KULTÜR SEPTEMBER 2011
I have never looked back. I am truly blessed to be part of such a creative and professional group. Apart from drumming for them, I have also re-mixed one of the tracks that forms part of the forthcoming Terminatryx remix album. You’ve been quite active at the moment with production on a new film. What can we expect without you giving too much away? A few weeks ago we finished the latest BlackMilk film “Jornada Del Muerto”, but soon realised that we wanted to write another script to enter into the S.A. Horrorfest 2011. We are always up for a challenge so immediately decided to start with the script (“ANNA”), which we are currently busy filming. It promises to nothing like anything you’ve seen from the BlackMilk team, but there will be blood, nudity, betrayal, and more…
“...I do believe that we are most definitely heading in the right direction...”
As long as I can remember, Horrorfest has been happening for a while now. How has this film festival grown over the years and has there been anything that has inspired you besides your own work? The S.A. Horrorfest is one of the reasons that I am making films and is truly an amazing platform for filmmakers to showcase their work. I have seen it grow over the years to become one of the leading international horror festivals. I have attended screenings where I have viewed many local and international films that have truly inspired me. There has been many.

Where do you see yourself with your productions in 5 years from now, Cannes? Hollywood? With every BlackMilk Productions film we ‘up our game’, so I do believe that we are most definitely heading in the right direction. Our films have shown at some international festivals, with positive feedback, so yes, Cannes and Hollywood is somewhere in the future. Do you think the future of film production by South Africans is looking good? Yes. Moving away from film, tell us a little bit more about your photography and what inspires you the most? I love capturing dark and sensual moments. (My) Photography is not about technique. It’s about soul.
29
KULTÜR SEPTEMBER 2011
I’ve noticed that you’ve captured a lot of emotion in your images, what do you look for in a shot? I love film noir, so dark and mysterious elements play an integral part in my work. Mostly beautiful women juxtaposed with interesting locations. Where do you see your future in photography? I would love for photography to be my primary income, but my style doesn’t lend itself to this loally. If I was in Europe it would be another story altogether. I am not prepared to sacrifice my style and artistic freedom to please the South African commercial market. But there are some options… Any last words? Stay tuned.

PINS & NEEDLES “Pins and Needles” is a lingerie label that was established in 2011 as an off-shoot of 5 year old “Paper Doll Design Studio” owned by Tatum Kelly. When her long-time friend and Ex-student, Deeva van Der Merwe, joined Tatum as an assistant, they found that they were being approached to do a lot of lingerie. “The girls” were inspired! A sample range was made, photographs taken, giveaways organised. The facebook page was uploaded and friends invited. And the rest is history. Deeva and Tatum are design duo who despise “fashion” but are obsessed with art. This, combined with their unique design styles, results in a quirky and timeless aesthetic. They are both part of a social scene that includes a vast array of artists, musicians and designers, allowing them the freedom to explore many different themes within their
design ranges. Their lingerie caters for pin up queens and rock chicks, little cotton tails and shy gals... Any lady who wants to look and feel amazing! With future lingerie items ranging from knickers and ticklers, cover-ups and night gowns...to camisoles, rompers, jumpsuits, frilly knickers... there will be something for everyone. Custom orders are also welcome, allowing those with a unique figure the chance to order lingerie “to fit” and those with slightly “off-beat” bedroom needs the opportunity to fulfil their dreams*. Most of the style ranges are produced in limited quantities or as once off designs. All fabrics and trim they use are a combination of the followingvintage, limited edition or recycled. Each embellishment is a once-off design, chosen
with care and consideration for the particular piece’s styling. The debut range of naughty “jailbait” panties is available direct from the designers’ studio in Observatory, Cape Town and is also stocked at “Moose” 114 lower Main Observatory, Cape Town. Along with the limited range of camisoles and knickers that are featured in the first “Pins and Needles” photo shoot. JARVI
LION The name Jarvi Lion comes from the old German word ‘Jarvis’ meaning Spear Man and ‘Lion’, king of the fleabags. Some say he’s a bit of a prick but that’s due to the adorning horn spikes on his baseball cap. He was a solitary cat during his early years, opting to sculpt findings and scribble his surroundings rather than irritating the large humans. In his final year of high school he attended his first art college. He ended up receiving 100% for both graphic design and art practical from the National School of Arts moderators. Today you can find his print work and paintings selling on the walls of Rafiki’s bar, Young Guns Tattoo parlor and soon, the Hout Bay Market in Cape Town. Look out for his new range of mini canvases coming out soon. Jarvi Lion primarily works in Acrylic and mixed media’s but is also known for his use of charcoal, graphite and chalk pastel. His commissioned pieces can be seen throughout South Africa in homes and businesses. You can drop him an email at lion.jarvi@gmail. com to enquire about private commission work and sales. Alternatively you can view the rest of his work on his Facebook page, Jarvi Lion art.
