Unlike the English position of but of but at at the beginning of the second clause, が attaches to the end of the first clause; the pause in speech and the comma in writing fall after が.

You can join nouns together with と or や. と (and ) is used to enumerate all objects that exist in a certain place or all objects that belong to a certain category, while や (and things like that ) is used to list only representative objects. Thus, と is exhaustive, and や is not. You may conjoin conjoin as as many nouns as you like with these particles. Remember: you cannot use these particles to connect adjectives, verbs, or sentences.

As of December 2003, nearly 80 million cell phones were in use in Japan.
