GSM BSS Uplink CoMP (Joint RX) Feature Parameter Description
2 Overview
2
Overview
2.1 Introduction As GU refarming is applied more widely, UMTS frequencies cause more severe uplink interference on GSM networks in GU@5MHz scenarios, worsening the GSM uplink voice quality and related KPIs. The Uplink CoMP feature is introduced to improve GSM uplink voice receive quality using the joint reception technique. With this feature, two cells can simultaneously receive uplink voice signals from cell-edge MSs, and the BSC then combines and decodes these signals, reducing the bit error rate (BER) significantly and improving uplink decoding performance. Figure 2-1 Working principles of Uplink CoMP
NOTE
This feature can be used in multi-BTS scenarios but not in multi-BSC scenarios.

2.3 Benefits This feature provides the following benefits for cell-edge MSs when approximately 30% of the traffic is from CoMP calls in the uplink: l l l
The uplink low quality indicator (LQI), the proportion of MRs at receive quality levels 6 and 7 to all MRs in the uplink, decreases by 5% to 20%. The mean opinion score (MOS) increases by 0.1 to 0.2 points. The Abis-interface transmission bandwidth occupied by CS services triples. NOTE
The gains described in this section are all theoretical. There are many factors affecting network performance, and actual gains on the live network may differ from those predicted.

3 Technical Description
Technical Description
3.1 Uplink CoMP This feature takes effect when CoMPSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to ON(On).
3.1.1 Decision on Starting Uplink CoMP in Connected Mode The BSC selects uplink CoMP MSs and coordinating cells based on after-filtering MRs.
Uplink CoMP MS The BSC considers MS uplink quality to be poor and the MS suitable for an uplink CoMP MS if the filtered uplink quality level of the MS is greater than the value of the CoMPULQualThld(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter.
Coordinating Cell The BSC can select a coordinating cell based on path loss from synchronized intra-frequency band neighboring cells in the neighboring cell list. 1.
2.
A neighboring cell can be a candidate coordinating cell if both of the following conditions are met: –
(Downlink transmit power of neighboring cell – Filtered downlink signal strength of neighboring cell) < (Downlink transmit power of host cell after power control compensation – Filtered downlink receive level of host cell after power control compensation + Value of CoMPCoCellStartHyst(BSC6900,BSC6910))
–
The neighboring cell meets the P/N criterion for candidate coordinating cells. That is, of N MRs, at least P MRs meet the conditions for determining a candidate coordinating cell.
The BSC sorts candidate coordinating cells in ascending order based on path loss and preferentially selects the cell with the least path loss as the coordinating cell. Path loss of a neighboring cell = Downlink transmit power of the neighboring cell – Filtered downlink signal strength of the neighboring cell If different neighboring cells have the same path loss, the BSC randomly selects one as the coordinating cell.

GSM BSS Uplink CoMP (Joint RX) Feature Parameter Description
3 Technical Description
If no coordinating carrier is available in the candidate cell, the BSC reselects a neighboring cell with the second least path loss as the coordinating cell.
3.1.2 Decision on Starting Uplink CoMP During Assignment The BSC selects uplink CoMP MSs and coordinating cells based on SDCCH MRs, and starts Uplink CoMP on the assigned TCH.
NOTICE l This feature cannot be started during TCH assignment. l If the BSC cannot identify the coordinating cell based on SDCCH MRs, this feature cannot be started even when the TCH assignment is complete. Instead, this feature can be started based on TCH MRs. The decision method is the same as that described in 3.1.1 Decision on Starting Uplink CoMP in Connected Mode.
Uplink CoMP MS The BSC considers MS uplink quality to be poor and the MS suitable for an uplink CoMP MS if the filtered uplink quality level of the MS is greater than the value of the CoMPULQualThld(BSC6910,BSC6900) parameter.
Coordinating Cell The BSC can select a coordinating cell based on path loss from synchronized intra-frequency band neighboring cells in the neighboring cell list. 1.
A neighboring cell can be a candidate coordinating cell if the following condition is true: (Downlink transmit power of neighboring cell – Filtered downlink signal strength of neighboring cell) < (Downlink transmit power of host cell after power control compensation – Filtered downlink receive level of host cell after power control compensation + Value of CoMPCoCellStartHyst(BSC6900,BSC6910))
2.
If no coordinating carrier is available in the candidate cell, the BSC reselects a neighboring cell with the second least path loss as the coordinating cell.
3.
The BSC repeats operations 1 and 2 based on SDCCH MRs and records the coordinating cell for each MR. The coordinating cell selected the last time is considered the final coordinating cell.
3.1.3 Decision on Starting Uplink CoMP During Handover For MSs on which Uplink CoMP has been started, this feature is temporarily stopped during the handover procedure. When the BSC receives the Handover Complete message: Issue 01 (2017-03-15)

3 Technical Description
l
For an inter-cell handover, the BSC considers the host cell before the handover as the coordinating cell and starts this feature again.
l
For an intra-cell handover, the BSC keeps the host cell and coordinating cell unchanged and starts this feature again on other channels of the host cell.
3.1.4 Decision on Coordinating Cell Switch/Stopping of Uplink CoMP The BSC initiates a coordinating cell switch when both the trigger conditions and conditions for determining a coordinating cell are met. The BSC stops Uplink CoMP for uplink CoMP MSs if the trigger conditions are met but the conditions for determining a coordinating cell are not met (the BSC cannot select an available coordinating cell). These conditions are described below.
Trigger Conditions Stopping of this feature will be triggered when the triggering conditions on receive level are met or when the coordinating cell is out of synchronization. A coordinating cell switch is triggered if any of the following conditions is met: l
Quality-triggered An SACCH frame is used as the measurement period. If the average uplink receive BER of the coordinating cell is greater than or equal to the value of CoMPCoCellBERThres(BSC6900,BSC6910), a coordinating cell switch is triggered. Average uplink receive BER of the coordinating cell = (Number of incorrectly decoded bits in an SACCH frame/Total number of bits in the SACCH frame) x 100
l
Level-triggered A coordinating cell switch is triggered if the P/N criterion is met and the following is true: (Downlink transmit power of neighboring cell – Filtered downlink signal strength of neighboring cell) > (Downlink transmit power of host cell after power control compensation – Filtered downlink receive level of host cell after power control compensation + Value of CoMPCoCellStopHyst(BSC6900,BSC6910)) If a coordinating cell switch cannot be performed, stopping of this feature will be triggered.
l
Coordinating cell out of synchronization If the coordinating cell is out of synchronization, the BSC performs a coordinating cell switch. If a coordinating cell switch cannot be performed, stopping of this feature will be triggered.
Coordinating Cell The BSC can select a coordinating cell based on path loss from synchronized intra-frequency band neighboring cells in the neighboring cell list. 1.
A neighboring cell can be a candidate coordinating cell if both of the following conditions are met: –

3 Technical Description
The neighboring cell meets the P/N criterion for candidate coordinating cells. That is, of N MRs, at least P MRs meet the conditions for determining a candidate coordinating cell.
The BSC sorts candidate coordinating cells in ascending order based on path loss and preferentially selects the cell with the least path loss as the coordinating cell. Path loss of a neighboring cell = Downlink transmit power of the neighboring cell – Filtered downlink signal strength of the neighboring cell If different neighboring cells have the same path loss, the BSC randomly selects one as the coordinating cell. If no coordinating carrier is available in the candidate cell, the BSC reselects a neighboring cell with the second least path loss as the coordinating cell.
3.1.5 FACCH Frame Check The BTS evaluates the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the current frame and compares it to the threshold specified by FACCHIdentifyLevel(BSC6900,BSC6910) to check whether the frame is an FACCH frame. l
If it is, Uplink CoMP enhances the frame decoding.
l
If it is not, Uplink CoMP does not enhance the frame decoding.
3.1.6 Combination and Decoding When ULCoMPSoftInfoReportSw(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to ON(On), the host cell and coordinating cell can report soft information of speech frames, SACCH frames, and FACCH frames to the BSC, where the information can be combined and decoded. When this parameter is set to OFF(Off), the host cell and coordinating cell report soft information of only SACCH frames to the BSC.
3.2 Enhanced Signaling Frame Decoding The enhanced signaling frame decoding function takes effect when SigDecodeEnSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to ON(On).
NOTICE This function is not controlled by the license for GBFD-191201 Uplink CoMP (Joint RX).
3.2.1 Enhanced SDCCH Signaling Frame Decoding The MaxSABMCombinedDecode(BSC6900,BSC6910) or MaxSDCCHCombinedDecode(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter specifies whether the BSC uses this function. l
Issue 01 (2017-03-15)
If MaxSABMCombinedDecode(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to a value other than 0, the BSC performs combined decoding for SABM frames on the SDCCH for a number of times not exceeding that specified by MaxSABMCombinedDecode(BSC6900,BSC6910), to improve the performance of decoding for SABM frames on the SDCCH. 3 Technical Description
MaxSABMCombinedDecode(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to 0, the BSC does not perform combined decoding for SABM frames on the SDCCH. l
If MaxSDCCHCombinedDecode(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to a value other than 0, the BSC performs combined decoding for uplink signaling frames on the SDCCH for a number of times not exceeding that specified by MaxSDCCHCombinedDecode(BSC6900,BSC6910), to improve the performance of decoding for signaling frames on the SDCCH. When MaxSDCCHCombinedDecode(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to 0, the BSC does not perform combined decoding for signaling frames on the SDCCH.
3.2.2 Enhanced TCH Signaling Frame Decoding This function allows the BSC to perform enhanced decoding for uplink signaling messages in the TCH access and handover phases to improve uplink decoding of signaling frames.

GSM BSS Uplink CoMP (Joint RX) Feature Parameter Description
6 Engineering Guidelines
l
Do not enable this feature in geographically discontinuous areas.
l
In areas where this feature is enabled, time synchronization must be achieved between the host cell and coordinating cell.
l
In areas where this feature is enabled, the Abis-interface transmission bandwidth occupied by CS services will triple. Ensure that the transmission bandwidth meets this requirement before enabling this feature.
l
The Abis interface must use IP transmission.
l
IP transmission over the Abis interface must meet the QoS requirements. For details, see IP BSS Feature Parameter Description.
l
Do not configure the intra-frame bit offset.
l
When this feature is enabled, you are advised to disable real flow access control and perform access control based on the default reserved bandwidth.
l
When this feature is enabled and POUc boards are configured for the BSC6910, do not configure logical ports for the boards, and do not restrict the bandwidth.
6.3.3 Hardware Planning l
When this feature is enabled, the number of required GUEP type DEUa or EGPUb boards is related to traffic volume and board processing capability. –
Number of required DEUa boards = (Value of CELL.KPI.TCH.TRAF.ERL.TRAF(BSC6900,BSC6910) × 30%/3000) + 1
–
Number of required EGPUb boards = (Value of CELL.KPI.TCH.TRAF.ERL.TRAF(BSC6900,BSC6910) × 30%/8000) + 1
In the two formulas, the value of CELL.KPI.TCH.TRAF.ERL.TRAF(BSC6900,BSC6910) indicates the total traffic volume of cells where Uplink CoMP is to be enabled in the BSC, 30% indicates about 30% of users are poor-quality users and they need to use CoMP on common networks, 3,000 indicates the DEUa board processing capability in common voice service scenarios, 8,000 indicates the EGPUb board processing capability in common voice service scenarios, and 1 indicates DEUa or EGPUb boards work in N+1 redundancy mode. l
When this feature is enabled, it is recommended that new GUEP-type DEUa boards be configured in the subrack where the fewest XPU boards are configured, to avoid an inter-subrack traffic burst.
l
When this feature is enabled, it is recommended that new GUEP-type DEUa or EGPUb boards be configured in the same subrack as the Abis interface board, to avoid an intersubrack traffic burst.

If some DEUa/EGPUb boards are not configured in the same subrack as the Abis interface board, you need to determine the type of SCU board to be used based on the total inter-subrack traffic. l When ULCoMPSoftInfoReportSw(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to ON(On), the following formula applies: Total inter-subrack traffic = (Value of CELL.KPI.TCH.TRAF.ERL.TRAF(BSC6900,BSC6910) x 30% x 25 x 9 x 2) + Value of VS.Frame.Flux.Peak.TxRate(BSC6900,BSC6910) l When ULCoMPSoftInfoReportSw(BSC6900,BSC6910) is set to OFF(Off), the following formula applies: Total inter-subrack traffic = (Value of CELL.KPI.TCH.TRAF.ERL.TRAF(BSC6900,BSC6910) x 30% x 25 x 1 x 2) + Value of VS.Frame.Flux.Peak.TxRate(BSC6900,BSC6910) In these two formulas, the value of CELL.KPI.TCH.TRAF.ERL.TRAF(BSC6900,BSC6910) indicates the traffic volume of a subrack not configured with any DEUa or EGPUb board, 30% indicates about 30% of users are poor-quality users and they need to use CoMP on common networks, 25 represents the 25 kbit/s of bandwidth required for a call, 9 represents the fact that a CoMP user requires 9 times as much bandwidth as a common user when CoMP soft information is reported, 1 reflects the fact that a CoMP user occupies the same amount of bandwidth as a common user when CoMP soft information is not reported, and 2 reflects the fact that the host cell and coordinating cell each is served by boards in different subracks. When the total inter-subrack traffic is close to or greater than 4 Gbit/s, SCUb boards using 10GE ports or SCUc boards must be configured, and SCUa boards cannot be configured.
l
More Abis interface boards of the same type as the existing Abis interface board are required if the following condition applies to the sites carried on the board: ∑CELL.KPI.TCH.TRAF.ERL.TRAF(BSC6900,BSC6910) × 30% ≥ Maximum number of online users on the board/3 where 30% indicates about 30% of users are poor-quality users and they need to use CoMP on common networks.

6.5 Performance Monitoring Monitor the following items to check the changes after the Uplink CoMP feature is enabled. Item
Description
Expected Result
Uplink LQI
Indicates the proportion of MRs at uplink receive quality levels 6 to 7 to all MRs in the uplink.
Decreased by 5% to 20%
Proportio n of uplink CoMP call traffic
(CALL.CoMP.TRAF(BSC6 900,BSC6910)/ CELL.KPI.TCH.TRAF.ER L.TRAF(BSC6900,BSC6910 )) x 100%
The proportion of uplink CoMP call traffic is about 30%. NOTE A large proportion of uplink CoMP call traffic indicates high LQI gains. A small proportion of uplink CoMP call traffic indicates low LQI gains.
6.6 Parameter Optimization l
Uplink CoMP
When the proportion of uplink CoMP call traffic is lower than the expected value described in 6.5 Performance Monitoring, you can decrease values of the CoMPULQualThld(BSC6900,BSC6910), CoMPCoCellStatTime(BSC6900,BSC6910), and CoMPCoCellLastTime(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameters and increase values of the CoMPCoCellStartHyst(BSC6900,BSC6910) and CoMPCoCellStopHyst(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameters. This helps increase the proportion of uplink CoMP MSs, improving LQI gains. When the Abis interface bandwidth is insufficient, you can set ULCoMPSoftInfoReportSw(BSC6900,BSC6910) to OFF(Off) to reduce the Abis-interface traffic. However, this parameter setting will reduce LQI gains by about 30%. l
Enhanced signaling frame decoding
When the immediate assignment success rate is low and the SDCCH call drop rate is high, you can increase values of MaxSABMCombinedDecode(BSC6900,BSC6910) and MaxSDCCHCombinedDecode(BSC6900,BSC6910) to decrease the SDCCH call drop rate and increase the immediate assignment success rate. When the immediate assignment success rate is high and SDCCH call drop rate increases, you can decrease the value of MaxSABMCombinedDecode(BSC6900,BSC6910) and increase the value of MaxSDCCHCombinedDecode(BSC6900,BSC6910) to decrease the SDCCH call drop rate. However, the immediate assignment success rate will decrease slightly in this case. When the TCH call drop rate increases, you can decrease values of MaxSABMCombinedDecode(BSC6900,BSC6910) and MaxSDCCHCombinedDecode(BSC6900,BSC6910) to decrease the TCH call drop rate.
