RULES FOR THE CLASSIFICATION OF NAVAL SHIPS (ENGLISH EDITION) The Rules for the classification of naval ships apply to naval surface steel ships of both combat (front line and second line ships) and support types (auxiliary ships) and cover the whole ship's life cycle: design, construction and operation. Therefore, it may be applied, as far as reasonable and practicable, to existing ships. The current edition of the Rules, effective from 1 July 2011, which was issued only in electronic format (enclosed with Circular 3619 on 28.6.2011) is now also available in the printed version. RULES FOR THE CLASSIFICATION OF FLOATING OFFSHORE UNITS AT FIXED LOCATIONS AND MOBILE OFFSHORE DRILLING UNITS (ENGLISH EDITION) The Rules are subdivided into Parts A to F. Parts A, B, C and D apply to all types of units, while Part E applies, in addition or as an alternative to Parts B, C and D, for the assignment of the service notations FSO (floating units for the storage and offloading of liquid hydrocarbons), FPSO (floating units for the production, storage and offloading of liquid hydrocarbons), FSRU (floating units for the loading, storage, regasification and offloading of gases), FLNG (floating units intended for liquefaction, storage and offloading of natural gas) and MODU (mobile offshore drilling units). Part F contains specific requirements for the assignment, at the request of interested parties, of the additional class notations of interest for these types of units. Amendments to the Rules, whose effective da te is 1 July 2011 or 1 January 2012, were published with Circular 3621 on 29.6.2011. RULES FOR THE CERTIFICATION OF COATING SYSTEMS (ENGLISH EDITION) The Rules apply for the purpose of certification of coating systems and are in accordance with the requirements: •

of IMO Resolution MSC.215(82), "Performance standard for protective coatings for dedicated seawater ballast tanks in all types of ships and double-side skin spaces of bulk carriers" (hereafter PSPC), which, among other things, stipulates the criteria for type approval of marine products for coating systems; of Procedural Requirement No. 34 (PR 34), "Application of the IMO Performance Standard for Protective Coatings (PSPC), Resolution MSC.215(82)", developed and adopted by IACS in order to guarantee a consistent approach to the subject by all IACS Classification Societies, which contains the procedure to verify compliance of coating systems with PSPC requirements.

The type approval process includes: • •

type tests, to be carried out by approved laboratories according to th e PSPC test procedures; production control at the manufacturer’s pr oduction site, in accordance with the provisions of PR 34.

An amendment, effective from 1 January 2012, has been made in order to make the verification of the production control system suited to those manufacturers with multiple sites. In particular, in the case of production sites with a Quality Management System certified in compliance with ISO 9001 or equivalent standard by a recognized certification body, upon satisfactory outcome of the assessment at the main production site, the assessment audit at the other production sites may be waived upon satisfactory examination of the Quality Management System certificates and of the reports of the last audit at those production sites issued by the certifying body. RULES FOR SHIPBOARD SECURITY SYSTEM CERTIFICATION (ENGLISH EDITION) The Rules apply to the certification of the security system of ships and include the application of the requirements of the new Chapter XI-2 of the SOLAS Convention and of the ISPS Code (International Ship and Port Facility Security Code). The current edition of the Rules, effective from 1 July 2011, which was issued only in electronic format (enclosed with Circular 3620 on 28.6.2011) is now also available in the printed version. RULES FOR TESTING AND CERTIFICATION OF MARINE M ATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT (ENGLISH EDITION) The Rules apply to testing and certification of marine materials and equipment for which RINA Rules or statutory regulations – such as SOLAS, MED and ILO – require certification. The first five chapters give general criteria adopted by RINA for certification. Chapters 6 and 7 contain the summary tables listing the requirements for inspection and testing of products, respectively, at the workshop and at the shipyard. In order to facilitate consultation of the Rules, an alphabetical index of all the products mentioned in the Rules, with the indication of the applicable tables of Chapters 6 and 7, is given in Chapter 8. The new edition, effective from 1 January 2012, contains changes to Chapters 6, 7 and 8 made essentially for the purpose of updating the requirements for testing and certification in line with the Rules for the classification of ships and with the practices adopted by RINA some time ago. RULES FOR FIRE PROTECTION, DETECTION AND EXTINCTION FOR THE ISSUE AND MAINTENANCE OF SOLAS CERTIFICATES (ENGLISH EDITION) and RULES FOR FIRE PROTECTION, DETECTION AND EXTINCTION FOR THE ISSUE AND MAINTENANCE OF STATUTORY CERTIFICATES OTHER THAN SOLAS CERTIFICATES (ENGLISH EDITION) The Rules establish the requirements relevant to fire protection, detection and extinction for the issue and maintenance of statutory certificates to ships, respectively, subject and not subject to SOLAS where RINA has been charged to perform statutory surveys on behalf of the flag Administration. The new edition of both rules, effective from 1 January 2012, contains an amendment concerning the distribution of the nozzles of the CO2 fixed fire extinguishing system, considering that the same nozzles may also be used in the sample extraction smoke detection system. RULES FOR THE ISSUE AND MAINTENANCE OF THE SEAWORTHINESS CERTIFICATE OR THE SAFETY CERTIFICATE (ITALIAN EDITION) The Rules set out the requirements applicable for the issue and maintenance of the Seaworthiness Certificate or the Safety Certificate for passenger and cargo ships, fishing vessels included, as required by Italian law. An amendment, effective from 1 January 2012, has been made to better clarify the requirements applicable to yachts engaged in commercial activities under the service limitations foreseen by the Italian Administration. GUIDE FOR WELDING (ENGLISH EDITION) The Guide contains indications for welding construction, modifications and repairs on new and existing ships and includes, in the appendix, the text of IACS Recommendation No. 47 “Shipbuilding and Repair Quality Standard”. Moreover, it also provides indications and clarification regarding application of the requirements of the Rules for the classification of ships (Part B, Chapter 12) concerning welded connections of hull structures. In the new edition, effective from 1 January 2012, the text of IACS Recommendation No. 47 has been replaced with the most recent revision approved by IACS where the acceptance criteria for minor imperfections has been better clarified and aligned with the international standards which are mainly applied by shipyards and manufacturers. GUIDE FOR TECHNOLOGY QUALIFICATION PROCESSES (ENGLISH EDITION) The objective of the guide is to provide a systematic approach to the qualification of novel technology, to ensure that it is fit for its intended service. This guide applies to the Technology Qualification Processes of novel designs.
