patterns especially in the evaluation of sub-surface defect vs. unfused roots on partial penetration welds. This can best be done through observation by the operator of excavations made to explore indications. Drawings that show the details of partial penetration joints will help the operator evaluate the particle pattern. The area at the toe of fillet welds can also cause false indications when an abrupt section change is present. Re – examination after grinding and blending the edge of the fillet weld to provide a smooth transition from weld to base metal will determine whether indication is false. This condition can be minimized by applying a light, uniform coating of magnetic particles.
Evaluation of Indications Indications are revealed by retention of magnetic particles on the discontinuities. Surface roughness, dirt, oils and grease can cause false indication. True indications are caused by mechanical imperfections in the weld material and in the adjacent area. Relevant indications are those having a dimension greater than 1/16 in (1.5 mm). A linear indication is one having a length greater than 3 times its width.
