BAB I
PENDAHULUAN 1.1 Latar Belakang
Tanah merupakan lapisan permukaan bumi yang secara fisik berfungsi sebagai tempat tumbuh dan berkembangnya perakaran penompang tegak tumbuhnya tanaman dan menyuplai kebutuhan air dan udara serta secara kimiawi berfungsi sebagai gudang dan penyuplai hara atau nutrisi (senyawa organik dan anorganik sederhana), selain itu secara biologi tanah juga berfungsi sebagai habitat biota (organisme) yang berpartisipasi aktif dalam penyediaan hara tersebut dan zat-zat aditif (pemicu tumbuh, proteksi) bagi tanaman, yang ketiganya secara integral mampu menunjang produktifitas tanah. Tanah juga merupakan material bumi yang berasal dari pelapukan-pelapukan batuan, tumbuhan, maupun h ewan hidup yang telah mati. Keberadaan tanah di permukaan bumi ini sangat beragam. Keberagaman tersebut meliputi berbagai aspek, diantaranya morfologi, fisik, kimia, dan beberapa aspek lainnya. Keragaman sifat tanah kadang dapat dijumpai dalam satu petak dusun, desa, kecamatan, kabupaten, provinsi, dan bahkan antar negara. Keanekaragaman tanah tersebutlah yang menimbulkan adanya kegiatan-kegiatan pencaritahuan para pakar tanah dan kita sebagai mahasiswa.

BAB II TINJAUAN PUSTAKA 2.1 Konsep Dasar Ilmu Tanah
Ilmu tanah merupakan ilmu yang mempelajari keseluruhan tentang tanah. Tanah merupakan lapisan yang menyeliputi bumi antara litosfer (batuan yang membentuk kerak bumi) dan atmosfer. Tanah berasal dari pelapukan batuan dengan bantuan tanaman dan organisme. Proses pembentukan tanah dikenal sebagai pedogenesis. Proses yang unik ini membentuk tanah sebagai tubuh alam yang terdiri atas lapisan-lapisan atau disebut sebagai horizon. Setiap horizon dapat menceritakan mengenai asal dan proses-proses fisika, kimia dan biologi yang telah dilalui tubuh tanah tersebut. Fungsi Tanah
Tempat tumbuh dan berkembangnya perakaran
Penyedia kebutuhan primer tanaman (air, udara, dan unsur-unsur hara)
Penyedia kebutuhan sekunder tanaman (zat-zat pemacu tumbuh: hormon, vitamin, dan asam-asam organik; antibiotik dan toksin anti hama; enzim yang dapat meningkatkan kesediaan hara)
Sebagai habitat biota tanah, baik yang berdampak positif karena terlibat langsung atau tak langsung dalam penyediaan kebutuhan primer dan sekunder tanaman tersebut, maupun yang berdampak negatif karena merupakan hama & penyakit tanaman.

2.2 Dasar Pengklasifikasian Tanah
Dalam geografi aspek terpenting yang menyangkut ilmu pengrtahuan tanah ialah tentang klasifikasinya. Para ahli menetapkan bahwa kategori teratas dan terluas dari sifat penyebaran tanah di permukaan bumi adalah tentang golongan (order) dan kumpulan (sub order) tanah.
Tujuan dari klasifikasi tanah adalah sebagai berikut :
Mengorganisasi pengetahuan kita tentang tanah,
Mengetahui hubungan masing-masing individu tanah satu sama lain,
Memudahkan mengingat sifat-sifat tanah,
Dapat mengelompokkan tanah untuk tujuan-tujuan yang lebih praktis seperti dalam hal : 1) Menaksirkan sifat-sifatnya, 2) Menentukan lahan-lahan terbaik, 3) Menaksirkan produktivitasnya, 4) Menentukan areal-areal untuk penelitian.

Tipe tiang : ukuran agregat vertikal lebih dari horizontal, bentuknya masih dibedakan atas tipe perismatik yang ujungnya bersegi dan tipe kulumer yang ujungnya membulat, dan masing-masing ini dibedakan lagi menurut besarnya atas kelas-kelas seba gai berikut : 1) Sangat halus, panjangnya < 10 mm 2) Halus, panjang antara 10-20 mm 3) Sedang, panjang antara 20-50 mm 4) Kasar, panjang antara 50-100 mm

3. Konsistensi Konsistensi merupakan ketahanan tanah terhadap tekanan-tekanan gaya dari luar, yang merupakan indikator derajat maninfestasi dan corak gaya-gaya fisik (adhesi dan kohesi) yang bekerja pada tanah selaras dengan tingkat kejenuhan airnya. Hal ini akan menyebabkan tanah kehilangan sifat kekekalan dan kelenturan, menjadi gembur dan lunak serta menjadi keras dan kaku pada saat kering. Konsistensi tanah ditetapkan dalam tiga kadar air tanah yaitu :

Konsistensi lembab, untuk menilai derajat kegemburan dan keteguhan tanah dipilah menjadi lepas, sangat sangat gembur, gembur dan teguh, sangat teguh serta luar biasa teguh,

4. Warna tanah Warna merupakan indikator kondisi iklim tempat tanah berkembang atau asal bahan induknya, tetapi pada kondisi tertentu warna sering pula digunakan sebagai indikator kesuburan atau kapasitas produksi lahan. Kebanyakan tanah mempunyai warna yang tidak murni. Warna tanah dipengaruhi oleh bahan kandungan organik, mineral, drainase, dan kandungan air. Makin tinggi kandungan bahan organik, warna tanah makin gelap. Bahan organik memberi warna kelabu, kelabu tua atau coklat tua pada tanah kecuali bila bahan dasarnya tertentu sperti oksida dan besi atau penimbunan garam memodifikasi warna.

Setelah seluruh peralatan siap, kemudian menentukan lokasi tanah yang akan dijadikan sebagai sasaran penelitian profil tanah, 3. Setelah lokasi penelitian ditemukan, memulai kegiatan dengan mengamati tanah dan kemudian menentukan horison-horison tang terlihat pada tanah tersebut, dan sekaligus menentukan batas-batas horisonnya, 4. Mengukur ketebalan masing-masing horison dengan menggunakan meteran rol dan sekaligus mengamati topografi batas antar lapisan, 5. Menentukan struktur maupun tekstur tanah yang sedang diamati dan sekaligus menentukan konsistensinya 6. Mengambil tanah tersebut sebagai sampel kemudian memasukkannya ke dalam gelas

Sampel tanah yang digunakan pada praktikum Geografi Tanah ini berlokasi di tiga tempat. Praktikum pertama berlokasi di Pangkalan Utama TNI-AL Kelurahan Leato Kecamatan Kota Timur. Secara astronomis, kelurahan Leato terletak diantara 123 04’866’’ BT dan
00 29’378’’. Kondisi topografi Kelurahan Leato sangat bervariasi dengan elevasi antara 0-40
meter di atas permukaan laut dengan bahan induk batuan beku dan batuan sedimen. Bentuk wilayah Kelurahan Leato khususnya khususnya di sekitar Pangkalan Utama TNI-AL berbentuk bukit dan penggunaan lahannya sebagai hutan primer.
