Science is a threat to humanity. Do you agree? Albert Einstein, a renowned scientist, once said, “To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires requires creatie imagination and mar!s real adance in science." To man!ind, Science has brought about adancements and improements in our society. #rom saing and improing lies to easier communication, the eidences of science bene$tting our society is not hard to $nd. %oweer, one might start to ponder about the threats that science has brought to us. &ith the coneniences that Science has brought about, our lies hae become better, but we also become spoilt. 'ur oer(reliance and een misuse of Science has led to Science becoming a threat to humanity. Despite this, we need to realise the fact that science is the systematic acquisition of !nowledge based on the scienti$c method, and because Science is but a piece of !nowledge, it is up to humans on how we use this !nowledge. %ence, Science is not a threat to humanity if humans are able to handle this piece of !nowledge and use it to bene$t man!ind. Tal!ing Tal!ing about Science and its bene$ts bene$ts to our society, the only only thing that has allowed man!ind to progress progress from cae communities to ciilisations today are the countless scienti$c research and adancements. Saing and improing lies is )ust one of the bene$ts that Science has brought about. &ith the new medical researches and brea!throughs, many diseases and medical problems are able to be tac!led e*ectiely. +ecent scienti$c adancements now allow us to glimpse into our genetic ma!eup and the molecular structure structure of our DA. This has gien rise to genetic(based drug discoery and can possibly bring about more e*ectie drug discoery which can in turn sae lies. Science has also brought about in(itro fertilisation, which can help infertile couples get children despite their physical constraints. Eer since the introduction of -#, more than $e million babies were born through this method. /eing able to hae children de$nitely improes the lies of parents tremendously. 'ther than these two bene$ts, there are many more medical adances that all improe and sae human lies, all because of the e0istence of science. /esides medical adancements, science has also brought about more e*ectie and easier communications. 1one were the days where people would face problems communicating with people who are far away. ow with a clic! of a button, people can communicate with each other een if they are on opposite ends of the world. 2ommunication technologies hae eoled ery rapidly in the last decade and with the combination of the improements of the &orld &ide &eb, communication has neer been easier. The appearance of &hatsApp, S!ype, #aceboo! and many other communication platforms platforms can allow users to communicate without meeting face to face, thus increasing e3ciency. This can allow corporations to hae collaborations between each other with ease een if they are not based in the same country. 'utsourcing has also been made
more conenient for these companies. The easier and more e*ectie communication that science has brought about has made this world a much smaller place. Despite the oerwhelming bene$ts that science has brought about oer the years, one cannot deny that science has also brought up some harms and threats, no matter how insigni$cant they seem as compared to the bene$ts. &ith the constant deelopment of science, the misuse of science and technology is ineitable. Although the original intentions or motie for a particular scienti$c research might be for a good cause, there are always people who abuse these !nowledge. The misuse of science or of scienti$c achieements to create biological weapons that poison and spread disease is one good e0ample of this. These weapons are highly dangerous and has always proo!ed alarm and abhorrence in the public mind. 4nder the wrong hands, these weapons of mass destruction can cause massie harm to man!ind, possibly !illing millions of people if one was set o*. &hen compared to the cost of a nuclear weapons program, biological weapons are e0tremely cheap. -t is estimated that 5 gram of to0in could !ill 56 million people. -t is highly possible that this technology will be misused, if it is under the wrong hands. Although this chance might be small, one cannot deny the possibility of its occurrence. -f it does occur, it will de$nitely threaten humanity. 7isusing science and technology might seem li!e a big problem, but there is also a problem that science has brought that is often ignored. As science bring about more coneniences for man!ind, it is ineitable that la8iness would start to deelop in people. This is caused by their oerreliance of technology. 2ommunication and productiity tools such as the computer and social media are used the most in our current world. 'ne cannot deny that they allow for easier and more e*ectie communication. %oweer, the oerreliance of these technological tools hae bro!en down traditional relationships. The face to face conersations that were once the norm has eoled to become messages on social media or on the phone. 'ther than that, many indiiduals are becoming increasingly self(absorbed in ideogames and lie on the internet without ma!ing lasting connections with people face to face. The social s!ills that we once hae are thus slowly deoling and degenerating. This would certainly threaten humanity. -n conclusion, science is a double(edged sword, although it is ery bene$cial to our society in many ways, it can also harm man!ind. %oweer, one must realise that the towering enemy of man!ind is not science. Science is but a piece of !nowledge and it merely re9ects the social forces by which it is surrounded. %umans are the ones who decide what to do with that piece of !nowledge or technology. Science can bring more good than harm to man!ind, and is de$nitely not a threat to humanity if used properly. To preent science from threatening humanity,
organisations could be set up to monitor and regulate the use of science. -nternational laws and a code of conduct for the use and deelopment of science could also be implemented to ensure that science ultimately becomes our friend, not our enemy.
