Chapter I.

I.1.1. General Overview

Sports therapy is a feature of healthcare that especially concerned with athletes. It is specifically be about with the prevention of injury and rehabilitation treatment of patients that are in need for physical care. Sports therapy is not only treatment of injured patients but deals with many common muscular complaints. It concerns with the rehabilitation of athletes back to their most favorable level of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness, regardless of age and ability. It also avail of the idea of sport and exercise science incorporating physiological processes to prepare the athletes for training, competitions and other fitness works.

Sports training facilities will accommodate athletes’ reach their potential strength in terms of their athletic competence. The goal is to provide them state of the arts training resources and training development program. With athletes of every age and skill level, they can achieve the real result they want if they are well provided with different and new technological sports facilities. Teaming up with therapeutic and sports rehabilitation centers, athletes can develop their potential and fitness wellness with the availability of finest training resources that Philippines can provide for our national athletes.


I.1.2. Introduction

Outgrowing number of Filipino Athletes aspire leading institutions in emerging with different sports training facilities. These sports facilities are used to maximize athletic performance of athletes through sports science and medicine services, education and research. With these facilities, they are utilizing each space in providing the athletes with the best medical care. Giving them equipment that are scientific and technologically supported that may provide them creditably to the best of their abilities, giving honor to themselves and to the country.

With the increasing athletes’ participation in sports competition, there has been increase

harm sustained during their actual training and performance. Sports therapy centers will provide and assess them healthcare to vast recovery of their injuries as well as for the improvement of their physical condition in improving their athletics skills. With these means, they are committed to developing and producing hale athletes through training programs with the necessary fundamental that define an athlete.

These facilities will provide optimum care to Filipino athletes and will aid in promoting physical fitness and sports participation among Filipinos of all ages and abilities, encouraging them to adopt healthy lifestyles that will lead to useful, meaningful and productive lives.


I.1.3. Background of the Study

Sports medicine focuses on athletes’ fitness and well-being. It is the field of sports

medicine that encompasses many different healthcare professions. Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is a government agency that honors the transformation of Filipino people into a healthy citizenry through various commendable sports development programs. Under PSC is the Philippine Center for Sports Medicine (PCSM) serves as the medical arm of the Filipino athletes and the whole sporting community. The goal of these agencies is to continuously provide service to national athletes of the Philippines. Accordingly, each unit has its own set of defined functions to address the specific needs and concerns of the athletes. Seemingly, it has already grown in importance and responsibility. The PCSM remains dedicated in fulfilling its functions as a service-oriented body and the official medical arm of PSC.

Sports and athletes is one of the development programs of the Philippines. The primary function of sports in the Philippines is to give leadership and setting priorities to all national sports promotion and development, particularly giving emphasis on grassroots participation. The duty of providing both training and medical service to the athletes has been the core value of the study. Bringing the necessary measures for the athletes in their everyday training by continuously providing them with the optimum medical care and scientific services in bolstering their athletic performance.


I.1.4. Statement of the Problem

Integrating a healthy environment with therapeutic approach in vast recovery and improvement of athletes. This proposed project would enable to support a physical training facility that was also in hand with medical affirmation services. The project will cater the optimum care to Filipino National Athletes with its training and therapeutic facilities to maximize their athletic performance. With growing participation in competitive and physical fitness sport, there has been an increase in injuries sustained during these activities and this design will focus on the preventative and assessment of the injuries by providing a rehabilitation and athletic therapy center within the sports vicinity. Sport complex and other sports s ports clubs in the Philippines neglect the availability of medical services, which will sustain the development of their skills.

This study analyses the appropriate architectural solution in innovating a facility that would cater the training and medical services for the athletes and will be answered by the following questions:

1. What are the facilities needed that will cater both medical and training facilities for the athletes? 2. What medical facilities will help them t hem boast their athletic performance? 3. What architectural approach will promote to the wellness and physical fitness of the athletes?


I.1.5. Goals, Objectives and Strategies

I.1.5.1. Goals 

To provide efficient use of space conductive to health and wellness aspect of the athletes;



To optimize the design and location of key facilities;



To help in the efficient use of spaces;



To create a design integrated for the growth and development of the athletes.

I.1.5.2. Objectives 

The objective of the proposed project is to design and encourage healthy lifestyle that led to improvement of skills, also to apply sustainable design in the structure.



To conceptualize a plan that will promote physical fitness and sports participation among Filipinos of all ages and abilities.



To accommodate the immediate need of medical services for the national athletes.

The aim of the study will be the innovation of training and medical services within a certain place and the beneficiaries account towards the development of the health and physical fitness facility. Here are an ordered strategies to further explain the relevance of the study.

Filipinos has this passion for athletic competition that goes beyond physical capabilities and into mental mental preparedness, preparedness, focus and sportsmanship. sportsmanship.

This proposal is beneficial to the t he social aspect of the community especially to the Filipino national athletes as it focuses on the improvement and development of the necessity of the whole athletic community. This study will benefits the communal aspect of athletes and Filipinos in developing their social interaction in terms of their passion with sports competitions.



Economical Benefits

This study will enhance the sports development program provided by the government of the country. This will also provide employment for the students and graduate of special therapy courses that have the capability in contributing with the society. The success of this study will contribute to the enhancement of different athletic program within the sports facilities.


I.1.6. Scope and Limitation

The proposal will focus on integrating a healthy environment with therapeutic approach in vast recovery and improvement of athletes. This proposed project would enable to support a physical training facility that was also in hand with medical affirmation services. This will aim on the necessary key facilities and spaces for the t he training program as well as for the therapeutic center. Moreover, it will focus on designing an innovative facility within a sports training complex and vicinity.

The proposal will be limited to planning and designing an innovative facility that will cater them safety precautions and preventive actions within the sports facility. The proposed training facilities will serve indoor sports facilities that will be located near a large sports training faclity that can accommodate enermous number of training amenities. As for the medical services, sports rehabilitaiton and therapeutic center will be provided within the sports training vicinity. It will focus more on application of architectural design, conceptualization, location of utility and services, and circulation of different groups. The study excludes the preparation of the structural, mechanical, or plumbing details, estimates and its method of construction.


1.1.7 Assumptions

The study will be conducted based on the validity of the proposed project by providing reliable group and organization as the primary source of information that supports the sports development programs as the primary source. This study ensures unbiased data analysis due to its legitimate source of information. The problem was undertaken from the needed facility of medical service of the national athletes. Filipino national athletes will be the primary beneficiaries of the proposed project therefore their genuine participation will be in providing the necessary solution. Conducting similar studies and related topics will support the needs of the study.

I.2.1 Review of Related Literature and Studies I.2.1.1 Philippine Sports Commission

According to their official website, website, Philippine Sports Commission Commission envision “ A Commission Commission with a unified sports program which will enhance the quality of life of the Filipinos, instill national pride and attain international prestige through excellence in sports.” In their

official site, the PSC’s goal was to increase Filipino participation towards sports while

providing superiority in the athletic performances of Filipino athletes. PSC was made to proclaiming the importance of sports in forming a healthy and functioning citizen of the country. Approaches to provide the needs and concerns in sports facilities had progress significantly over the years. Sports have already been presented as a vital part of the Filipino lifestyle as sustained by the formation of various governing sports group and organization. I.2.1.2 Philippine Center for Sports Medicine

According to the official site of the Philippine Sports Commission, “PCSM “PCSM serves as the medical arm of the Filipino athletes and the whole sporting community. ” As an official medical unit of PSC, PCSM’s function is to serve as a service -oriented body responsible

to the growth and wellness of the athletes. It was said that its mission was to provide the best care to the National Filipino athletes by promoting physical fitness and participation of different group of people. PSCM also encourage Filipino athletes in

I.2.2 Related Studies and Projects I.2.2.1 Foreign Studies: Athletes Training Center in Omaha, Nebraska

Located on Omaha near in the boundary between Nebraska and Iowa, is a facility centre that integrates athletes training, and sports physical therapy. They offer various kinds of services for active people up to professional athletes who want to improve themselves. They are composed of elite who specialize in training and provides world class results.

They categorize their users based on their training needs. One is for recovery patients who undergo surgery or an injury. These are the people who want to recover and get back on the track of athletics. The second one is for the athletes who are undergoing vigorous training in order to improve their condition and skills.

Their facility consist of a full weight area for patients who are looking to get into their gym routines and it have Olympic platforms, pull power racks, dumbbells, etc for athletes who are exercising and lifting. They also have a full 10 x 30 yard turf area for patients who need to be reintroduced to walking, running, cutting throwing, etc and also for athletes’ dy namic training and conditioning.

They also have an indoor pitching mound and regulation pitching tunnel for patients who wants to return to the mound after suffering from an injury. They also provide a cool down area for patients who want to relax and socialize after finishing their treatment centre.


I.2.2.2 Foreign Studies: Brooks Center for Sports Therapy

The Center for Sports Therapy Clinic is located in Brooks Family YMCA. The Center offer one of the most comprehensive, evidence-based, evidence-based, sports and orthopedic physical therapy in the region. Brooks Center for Sports Therapy is the only facility in town that provide program consists of key tests and measures which they perform to ensure that any athlete is ready to go back to sport.

Their physical therapy is directed towards maximizing functional abilities and mobility in order to increase the independence of the athletes. They provide treatment by working with highly trained physical therapists and equipment equipment in the facility.

At Brooks Center for Sports Therapy, their physical therapy is the central element of treatment in inpatient, outpatient, skilled nursing and home health settings for nearly all conditions and sports injuries.

I.2.2.3. Local Studies: Philippine Orthopedic Center in Quezon City

The Philippine Orthopedic Center is a tertiary specialized hospital with a capacity of 700 beds. The hospital is currently located at Banawe Avenue corner Maria Clara Street, Santa Mesa Heights, Quezon City. They mainly cater patients with orthopaedic and neuromuscular neuromuscular conditions.

Originally built in Mandaluyong , Rizal in 1945, it serves civilian casualties during the liberation of Manila. Later on it was given to the Philippine government. government. It was relocated to Quezon City in 1963; its bed capacity was increased from the original 200 up to 700. The hospital also pioneered the introduction of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy courses in the Philippines.

The Medical Division consists of the Trauma Services, Adult Orthopedic Service, Children's Orthopedic service, Tumor Unit, Hand service and Spine Surgery service. The Laboratory Department is divided into the Blood Bank, Bacteriology unit, and Clinical Pathology unit. Its Rehabilitation Medicine Department has the Medical Rehabilitation Service, Physical Therapy section, the Occupational Therapy Section, Psychology


Section, Electrodiagnostics Unit, Neurology Service and the Prosthetics and Surgical Appliance Factory. The specialty service includes General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, Neurosurgery, Internal Medicine (pulmonary and cardiology) and Diabetes Care. The Nursing Division comprises both the main Nursing service and the Nursing training service.

The Institute's Sports Medicine and Fitness Center has been present to the needs of the country's top athletes in their objective o bjective of enhancing physical function to optimal levels.


The Center also provides comprehensive evaluation, design and monitoring of physical fitness programs for individuals who wish to perform at their best, regardless of age or profession. In St. Luke’s Sports Medicine and Fitness Center, the goals of strength for

both physical and mental aspects are achieved by a combination of assessment tests, exercise prescription packages, clinical and medical diagnostic procedures and psychological programs.

The Institute maintains a gym equipped for weight training and aerobic facilities for cardiovascular strength and endurance. It is a strong advocate of long-term programs for active lifestyle goals and improved body image for total wellness. Services and facilities of the Sports Medicine and Fitness Center include: Evaluation and Monitoring Packages, Rehabilitation and Psychological Examination Room, Outpatient and Inpatient Individual Exercise Prescription, Gym Exercise and Aerobic Facilities.


Chapter I.3 I.3 Research Methodology

In order to come up with an assessment for the need of a sports training therapy facilities, a diverse and extensive research is needed. In order to satisfy the gathered data, there’s a need for full cooperation of the participants and intact observation t o the

facilities. Multiple research methods used herein will be further discussed throughout this chapter.

I.3.1 Research Design In order to come up with varying innovations and solutions that will help the athlete’s

boast their athletic skills, an intricate and trustworthy study is needed. It is also important to study the perception of athletes in their insights on integrating a healthy environment with therapeutic approach with medical facilities. The research method that will be used is a descriptive research study. This method will be used to gather information that will be used in the assessment for the need of a sports training and therapy facility. This method will aid the study by focusing on the concerns of athletes in terms of their medical needs, which involves recording, description, and presentation of the proposed facilities. In this method, the researcher will conduct a case study of existing facilities by observing the amenities. The researcher will also be conducting an interview with the reliable sources that can help with the development of the study while a survey will be conducted for athletes to gather their thoughts and concerns in accordance with the proposed study. st udy.


Quantitative Method

For this study, a survey will be conducted and shall be composed of questionnaires. The researcher will perform a survey method for the data investigation of the research. Questionnaires must be done systematically to come up with information that will lead to a reliable evaluation and a distinctive solution. In this analysis, the researcher will be investigating not only a single individual but also a group of individuals. Qualitative Method

The researcher will conduct a case study of existing facilities that will contribute in the study by focusing on the concerns of athletes in terms of their medical needs. This method involves recording, description, and presentation of the facilities. The res earcher will also be conducting an interview with the reliable sources that can aid with the development of the study, answering inquires that may help in the progress and success of the proposed project. Research Locale: Rizal Memorial Sports Complex

The chosen locale for the case study is the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex; it is a national sports complex of the Philippines located on Malate, Manila. It is considered as the oldest sports complex in Asia that caters the training facilities of national athletes in developing their potential athletic skills.

The Rizal Memorial Sports Complex is located in Pablo Ocampo St. (formerly Vito Cruz St.), Malate, Manila. Pablo Ocampo Street is an inner city main road in Manila, and is generally accessible to the public being near the Vito Cruz LRT Station and the Vito Cruz railway station along Osmeña Highway.

The Rizal Memorial Sports Complex has the following facilities: Aquatics Center, Baseball Stadium, Rizal Stadium & Ninoy Aquino Stadium, Taekwondo Center, Wushu Center, Badminton Gym,Tennis Center, Track and Football Stadium, Gymnastic Center, Dry


Training Area, Boxing Gym, Pencak Silat Gym, Bowling Center, Weightlifting Gym, Player’s Lounge, Athlete’s Quarters and the Philippine Center for Sports Medicine.

The Sports Complex also houses the offices of some of the National Sports Association (NSAs). The Philippine Sports Commission main office was also located inside the complex.

The Sports Complex has indoor facilities, which cater the needs of mix martial arts athletes that include Wushu and Taekwondo Center. The Gymnastic Center is a large open-plan and high-ceiling structure that was fully equipped with gymnastics equipment like the mats that are laid out on the floor. The windows of the facility were located at the higher part of the structure to avoid glare while it brings daylighting during the day.

The Philippine Center for Sports Medicine was located inside the complex. The facility is

to small to accommodate the amount of athletes billeting inside the complex, though they are fully equipped with equipment to boast the athletes’ potential skills. o

Research Locale: Makati Medical Center

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of Makati Medical Center helps patients regain control over their body after suffering from different injuries. The department focused on patients diagnosed with physical injuries and disorders like sports injuries, and other musculoskeletal disorders.

They categorize their users based on their training needs. Recovery patients who undergo surgery or an injury are the one who want to recover and get back on the track in getting their athletics skills so they tend to use the therapy area in kneading their injuries or disorder.

Their physical therapy gym is a weight area for patients who are looking to get into their routines in boasting their performance. The facility has numerous number of threadmill who need to be reintroduced to walking, running, cutting throwing. Also for at hletes’ dynamic training and conditioning.

Research Locale: Moro Lorenzo Sports Center

The Moro Lorenzo Sports Center is a sport facility located in the Ateneo de Manila University campus in Quezon City, Philippines. The building was purposely designed for


sports training, programs and activities, and have an indoor basketball courts, indoor track field, gyms, fitness center and a sports medical clinic.

The first level of the building is where the Fitness Center and the Sports Medicine Clinic is located. The fitness center contains treadmills, recumbent bikes, upright bikes, cross trainers, and various kinds of weights.

Designed purely for training purposes, it houses an indoor basketball court, an indoor track oval and training gyms, all using Regupol flooring which is the low-impact rubberized surface that athletes prefer.

Basketball courts and badminton courts are housed on the second floor. A full floor above the courts is the two-lane, 200-meter track oval, which provides a view around the entire court area. Finally, on a mezzanine above it is the martial arts area.

Half a floor up, are the locker rooms, audio-visual room and the Marco Lorenzo Weights Room, with Hammer Strength equipment. The fitness center, located on the ground floor, contains treadmills, recumbent bikes, upright bikes, cross trainers, and various kinds of weights.

Moro Lorenzo Sports Medicine Clinic is known for its excelent therapy and healthcare facility, which are commonly used by its school’s varsity, teams, as well as PBA teams

and other professional athletes. But the sports clinic doesn’t have sufficient space to accommodate these numerous number of athletes.

I.3.2 Population and Sampling

Cluster sampling will serve as the sampling strategy of the study. The randomized process will include the clustering of groups with representative sample of participants in different sports category. The survey will be conducted in Rizal Sports Complex that has the total number of 273 national athletes billeted in the sports vicinity. The total number of national athletes according to PSC based from the August 2014 data has a total of 747. The respondents for the study will consider the average number of athletes; population. From the entire population, the sample of participants will be randomly selected to take the survey giving a total of 42 respondents for the study.


I.3.3 Research Instruments Survey

For this study, the research instrument, which will have been used, shall be composed of questionnaires. These questionnaires shall consist of 10 questions that will be based from the problem of the study. In formulating the questions, the proponent will have taken into consideration the factors needed in order to answer the problem. The questionnaires were primarily conducted to determine the concerns and needs of the national athletes in sports training and medical facilities. The questions shall be answerable based on their satisfaction and agreement making it easier for the respondents to understand and answer. The statistical technique chosen for the research is the descriptive statistics. It will describe the data and information gathered by the researcher to be used in the formulation of a solution. The mean will be the procedure used to indicate the average score of the chosen samples. This method will provide the needed information in the needs of the national athletes that will be beneficial for the study; thus, the average answers will be the computed results of the questionnaires, which will lead the researcher to an accurate conclusion and a feasible proposal. Interview

The proponent interviewed the Acting Head of the PSC Engineering Section, Architect Noel Elnar. The interview was conducted to determine the concerns of the government in the needs of training and medical facilities of the national athletes in developing their potential skills.


The proponent also had a short interview with Atty. Guillermo B. Iroy Jr., Executive Director of Philippines Sports Commission, regarding the concerns on the need of a therapy and rehabilitation center for the national athletes. Observation

The study conducted case studies that were analyzed based on observation of each facility that they have.

Case Study at Rizal Sports Complex

Arch. Noel Elnar, Head of the PSC Engineering Section, guided the researcher to the amenities of the sports complex. In this method, the researcher will find needs and concerns of the facilities and determine the activity involved in each area. The researcher will also be observing the facilities in the Philippine Center for Sports Medicine that caters the therapeutic needs of the national athletes, which was located within the vicinity of the Rizal Sports Complex.

Case Study at Makati Medical Center

Mr. Roel Sabong, Unit Manager of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation guided the researcher to the facilities of the department. In this study, the researcher analyzed and observed the facilities and activities involved in each places.

Case Study at Moro Lorenzo Sports Center

Mr. Joel Silva, assistant coach of the Ateneo Blue Eagle, accompanied the researcher to the facilities of the sports center. In this study, the researcher will analyzed and will find out the advantages of the vicinity that has both the training and medical facility in the sports center.


Chapter I.4 I.4 Summary of Findings and Analysis

In this chapter the outcome of the gathered data are analyzed, summarized and discussed in a directed and systematic manner. The produced data are gathered during the research methodology in which the proponent propo nent used several techniques to satisfy and to equip the study with sufficient information of Rizal Memorial Sports Complex. This chapter will present figures and presentation in order to further understand the collected data.

Analysis of Data

From the 42 athletes participated in the survey, 24 athletes have sustained minor and major injuries, more than half the average number of athletes surveyed. Based on the charts below, athletes are more satisfied if the medical facilities are located within the sports vicinity. The facility accommodated the athletes with their injury but it lacks space to facilitate numerous numbers of athletes in the sports spor ts vicinity.

The researcher interviewed Arch. Noel Elnar who is responsible for the operating construction and design planning of the sports complex. Their department aids in preparation of designs, plans, bidding and specifications of ongoing constructions and future infrastructure of the Philippine Sports Commission. The interview was conducted to ask concerns with the training and medical facilities of the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex and to query specific requirements of the facilities for the proposed study.

Researcher : Do you have concerns regarding with the sports training facilities? Arch. Elnar Elnar : The facilities in the sports complex are now obsolete and some facilities

are under renovation. It been 80 years and now the complex is bygone. What are some problems of the sports complex that may affect the performance : What Researcher : of the athletes?

Arch. Elnar : The common problem that we’ve encountered in the complex was

flooding. The sports complex was located in a densely populated area and is limited to approximately 10 hectares of land. The location of the site was surrounded with roads, which make it vulnerable to pollution that may harm the health of the athletes. The researcher had a short interview with Atty. Guillermo B. Iroy Jr., Executive Director of the Philippine Sports Commission, regarding the needs of medical facilities for the the athletes. Philippines Center for Sports Medicine is a medical arm of the national athletes that is a unit department under Philippine Sports Commission. Researcher: Is there a need for a sport medical and therapy center for the national

athletes? Atty. Iroy Jr.: We have a unit department under the PSC, the Philippine Center for

Sports Medicine that was located inside the vicinity of the sports complex that caters the medical needs of the national athletes. They have physical training gym and treatment areas to accommodate the athletes with their physical condition. Though, the medical facility needs some room for improvement and space because it was too dense to cater the population of the national athletes and every sports training facilities in the Philippines don’t accommodate these kinds of facilities.

I.4.2 Need Analysis

The Philippine Center for Sports Medicine promotes healthcare facilities to the national athletes. In order to carry out their goal, a need of medical facilities in every sports complex and training facility should be established.


The Philippine Sports Commission encourages establishments of sports training facilities in order to promote Philippine sports in different parts of the country. Some sports facilities in the country lack training amenities and medical needs. In order to provide their needs, the commission is allowing promising and potential athletes in regional and provincial areas to accommodate the development and medical arm of the athletes.

I.4.3 Qualitative Analysis

The qualitative analysis of Rizal Memorial Sports Complex and Makati Medical Center based its analysis from the presented profile and conditions of their facilities. This chapter discusses the analysis on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the facility that was analyzed under the case study method.

SWOT Analysis Strength

Based upon the observation and interviews conducted, an analysis on the strengths of Rizal Memorial Sports Complex has been established. The sports complex is located at the heart of Metro Manila, which caters different sport training facilities, which make it convenient to the public. It is has three gate entries, strategically controlled vehicle access and is bounded by roads that make it easily accessible with the design layout of the site.

The whole whole complex measures 10 hectares that can accommodate accommodate large

number of participants for national and international competitions. Weakness Mostly the facilities in the sports complex are obsolete and don’t meet the required

international requirements for for a standard facility.

Some of the amenities amenities are too

compact to accommodate the number of national athletes in a certain sports category.


The location of the site is vulnerable to flooding and prone to pollution, which may harm the athletes. Also, it was bounded with creak to prolong them to make future expansions. The site lacks environmental nature and buffer areas to separate different sports facilities. The complex doesn’t accommodate enough parking spaces for visitors and participants and some of the facilities lack maintenance.

Opportunities

The site location creates an opportunity for commercial spaces since the surrounding area has a large amount of visitors and participants that goes to the venue when there’s a certain sports activities and competitions. With the environment and activities surrounded the complex, the sports training tr aining facilities facilities can provide convenient access to the public garnering more opportunities to the structures.

Threats

The location of the site is vulnerable to flooding and prone to some environmental issues like air pollution. Threats may arise from environmental factors in the site that may cause harm to the health of the athletes.

The therapy and rehabilitation facilities in the department of Physical Medical and Rehabilitation in Makati Medical Center was within the vicinity of the private hospital which provide finest spaces and comfort for the patients and athletes compare to the therapeutic facility provided by Philippine Center for Sports Medicine in RMSC. The


therapeutic center in the Rizal Sports Complex was too compact to accommodate the number of national athletes. Healthcare of the national athlete is one important factor that the PCSM promotes. Immediate prevention and assessment of injuries of the athletes should be considered. The facilities of PCSM in Rizal Sports Complex prevent serious injuries to happen because the amenity is located within the vicinity of the sports complex compare with the therapy and rehabilitation r ehabilitation facilities situated in private hospitals.

Advantages of of Moro Lorenzo Lorenzo Sports Center Center

The sports center caters both bot h the training and medical facility in one sports vicinity which provide immediate assessment on the injuries of the athletes. It also provides better circulation as each facility is zoned according to the needs of the t he athletes. The facilities are zoned accordingly in each floor level of the sports center making it more accessible to the athletes without any obstructions.

Chapter 1.5 Conclusion and Recommendations

This chapter analyze the datas gathered to come up with a conclusion in relation with the problem statement. This conclusion will guide the researcher to develop recommendation to develop an appropriate architectural solution for the study.

Based on the findings from the archival research, case study and interview methods, the following are the conclusions:

The athletes needed facilities are the indoor center for gymnastics, martial arts and indoor sports based on the recommendation and priority of the PSC, also based from the number of national athletes as given in the data gathered. g athered.

The athletes also needed a facility that will cater their therapeutic and medical needs as suggested based on the profiling on the injuries of the athletes.



A centralized fitness and weightlifting gym is needed for the development of the athlete’s skills, which mostly need by the athletes.



The structures, playing courts, areas and fields shall anticipate future expansion since modifications in international standards in sports facilities are often done.



The site should be easily accessible, unexposed to pollution & excessive flooding, should be sufficient for future expansion.

The basis of this study is the insufficiency of providing medical needs for the athletes. Theraphy centers will provide them the healthcare to vast recovery and development of their skills. Since some of the sports training facilities in our country doen’t provide the

needed medical provision in the sports vicinity, proposing a therapeutic facilities that will cater the development and recovery of injuries of the athletes is the basis of this study. Innovation and other development will be stated and will further explain which is to enhance the architectural space needed in creating an impact for further analysis of the study. the athletes as the basis for therapeutic intervention. Understanding the physical and social effects of architecture on the athletes is an important tool in showing the progression and development of the athletes in accordance to their skills.

The current concern of sports training facilities calls for an implementation of a therapeutic facility for the medical needs of the athletes. This study attempts to investigate the concept of multiphase planning and design in establishing phases regarding on behavioral analysis of athletes activities in both training and medical works. The movements of athletes are based on the three phases of their activities based on the analysis gathered.

Moderation Phase: Injured athletes faces this phase in which there are in treating stage.

Their skills are tended to be lower than when they train because of the fact that they are wounded. Athletes’ bodies are coax into its super condition by easing their physical

frame. Designing a well-balanced environment between healthy and physical environment will promote their positive attitude through healing.

Reversibility Phase: Athletes tend to lose their hard-won fitness gains and usually

disappear faster than they were gained. To regain their physical skills, athletes are moved to facilities that will gain their sporting skills to track back what they need to. They need to retrain their bodies to its usual condition so designing a

Specificity Phase: The best way to develop physical fitness for the athletes is to train

their energy systems and muscles as closely as possible to the way they are used in


their chosen sports. Thus the best way to train is to provide them the adequate facilities they needed in boasting their athletic skills to help them improve their performance.

Through an interpretation of this chart, the interactive qualities of multiphase development will be shown to be the most comprehensive means of insuring the behavioral activities of the athletes that can be established in analysis of space planning and zoning. The complexities of space and functional programming have led the proponent to seek those those innovations on the development of sports training and therapeutic facilities. The multiphase design concepts of the study are innovative and beneficial for the efficiency of sports training and medical development. Utilizing multiphase development, the sports facilities can be directly associated with the medical program requirements of the sports medicine for the proposed projects. The process is a multiphase planning and design activity, which establishes development for large-scale sports facility. The phases will generate both medical science and space functional requirements for facility design, the sports and healthcare development process is comprehensive in its approach to problem solving.


Chapter 2.2.2 Mobility Space Design

From the past years, the design quality over sports architecture has becoming dense. From then on, the focus is solely on function, the emphasis is less on the constructive dimension than on the organizational one, with regard to spaces for maximum capacity, for efficiency, mobility, circulation and security.

Freedom of Space

A connection between the different spaces that was categorized between the training and medical facilities of the sports center is needed in planning a likable circulation. A linkage from the outdoor and indoor space should be given to achieve an ideal healthy environment. The spaces and building level of the proposed project is ideal to be design horizontally, providing future expansion to availability of the site.

mostly buildings nowadays are pursuing sustainability. The recent trend in green architecture has decreased the environmental impact of the built environment, but it has accomplished little in the way of reconnecting us to the t he nature.

This principle shows that buildings can connect people and nature like how sports training facilities imp rove athletes’ skills and therapeutic facilities that heals their injuries. Biophilic Design points the way toward creating healthy and productive habitats for modern humans. It is about humanity's place in nature and the natural world's place in human society, where mutuality, respect, and enriching relationships can and should exist at all levels and should emerge as the norm rather than the exception.

The relevance of biophlic design offers a pattern on how buildings need to be build and design which can be recognize in planning with the therapeutic facility giving off a positive experience of natural system in the building and constructed landscape into the athletes’ health, performance and well -being. The basic concepts of biophilia, its

expression in the built environment, and how biophilic design connects to human development.

The architecture and benefits of biophilic design practices the implementation on the strategies in creating buildings that connect people with nature and provide comfortable and productive places for people, in which they can live, work, and study.


Chapter 2.2.4 Additive Architecture

Additive Architecture is an approach used by Danish architect Jørn Utzon to describe his development of architectural projects on the basis of growth patterns in nature.

According to Jorn Ultzon, buildings should be designed more freely rather than in identical box shapes. In the design of the proposed sports facilities, the natural fondness in working with its surrounding is the fundamental idea in architecture. When working with the additive principle, the designs as well as the layout are given the freedom that can achieve with the additive principle in tackling greatly varying tasks and activities in accordance to the behavior of the athletes.

In accordance through the data that where gathered, athletes in moderation phase would be interpreted for a therapy center. In this phase, medical and therapy spaces will be zoned together. As for the reversibility phase, where athletes need to regain their strength, facilities for fitness and wellness of the athletes will be grouped in this zone specifically the physical gym. Athletes after regaining their physical strength need to develop their physical skills; the sports training facilities will be cater in the specificity phase.

Standard dimension and height

In specificity phase, different sports training facilities are in need to be designed and planned. Standard size of courts, ceiling height, and standard dimension are should be followed accordingly.

Light control and ventilation

As for some training facilities, natural ventilation and lighting are needed in order to adopt with the training activities of the athletes. For the other training facilities, artificial lighting is more appropriate. Natural lighting may cause glare that can affect the performance and training of the athletes. Windows are also one of the concerns that need to be analyzed accordingly. Glass windows are specifically not suitable for some training facilities causing too much glare.

The ability to move from a certain space to another provides easy access to the athletes to all phases of the sports spo rts training vicinity. The zoning of spaces will be flexible arranged and categorized to accommodate the certain needs of the athletes, physically and medically. In designing the whole sports facilities, the potential to move freely and easily is can be shown by having spacious social and interactive area for the athletes. The mobility of spaces is can be seen by providing spaces and areas that is capable of having multiple kind of activities.

Chapter 2.3.3 Application of Biophilic Design

Biophilic design can be applied to the therapeutic facility of the sports training center which brings out the fondness of nature into the design of the building. Not only to the outmost appearance but also in design planning of spaces. The connection between the nature and the human development shows that the surrounding itself brings out the healing environment for the athletes. The design points out the way to a healthy environment and productivity of human development. development.

Providing greeneries such as gardens can lessen the strain and give off calmness to the athletes, which somehow can also shows a healthy environment that can help in the healing process.

Chapter 2.3.4 Application of Additive Architecture

In designing space planning in the proposed project, additive module line will represent the thickness of the wall and the lines form contours of the finished drawing, meaning the degree of freedom can be achieve with the additive principle in planning the sports training center. The additive approach can be applied in the different building and level of the sports center, which are basically identical but differ in sizes and height. In planning the design of the sports facilities, the freely shaped draft of the plan expresses the fundamental idea of architecture. Minimal components will be applied in order to bring out the character of the building.

Land Use - Since the proposal will classify into a sports training center, land use should

be properly considered in selecting the site or location for the proposed project. It should cater the numerous numbers of the athletes. Allocation of the proposed project


will affect and impact the norms, culture, and existing condition of the community and it’s surrounding. The selected site should bring positive effect like providing a good

development and increase productivity of the locality.

Utility - it comes into different types depending on its importance and its circumferential

effectiveness to the proposed project. This can be categorized into public and private transportations, water supply, waste treatment system, drainage system, electrical supply, and other data mapping that will definitely needed in the development of the proposed project.

Chapter 3.1.2 Site Option Description Chapter3.1.2.1 Macro Site Option Description

1.) Antipolo, Rizal It is a 1st class component city in the province of Rizal, Philippines. It was made the capital of

Rizal when the former capital, Pasig

City became

part of Metro

Manila. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 677, 741 inhabitants. It has a land area of 306.10 km². Antipolo City is located in the central part of Rizal Province. It is approximately 26 kilometers east of Manila, which was conurbation with the NCR but still under Region 4-A of CALABARZON. Bounded by the municipalities of San Mateo, Rodriguez, Tanay, Angono, Taytay, Teresa, and Cainta, Quezon Province, and city of Marikina in Metro Manila. Headed by honorable, Mayor Casimiro “Jun” Ynares III with its

16 barangays.


2.) San Mateo, Rizal San Mateo is one of the largest municipalities municipalities in Rizal Province in terms of land area with 55.09 km² contributing 4.68% of the total land area of Rizal. San Mateo lies in the Marikina Valley. The valley extends south towards Marikina City, Pasig City and Cainta, Rizal. The Marikina River runs through the western portion of the municipality and the Nangka River runs through the southern portion. San Mateo is a lush valley bounded by mountain ranges and sliced by a river. Located along the western border of Rizal Province, it is bordered by Quezon City, Marikina City, Antipolo City, and Rodriguez. barangays. 3.) Rodriguez, Rizal Rodriguez is a municipality in the province of Rizal. It is the northernmost town in the province and surrounded by Antipolo City, Quezon City, Bulacan, Quezon Province, and Marikina City, which comes after San Mateo. The town is located on the slopes of the Sierra Madre mountain range and features many resorts. It is also one of the largest towns in Rizal province with 172.85 km². According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 280, 904 inhabitants. With the continuous expansion of Metro Manila, the municipality is now included in Manila built up area, which reaches Cardona in its westernmost part. Headed by Mayor Cecilio C. Hernandez and considered as 1st class, partially urban municipality which consist of 11 barangays.

1.) Site A covered a total lot area for about 7 hectares or an area of exactly 66, 978 sq.m. Since Antipolo commonly composed of mountains and hilly type of land, the site is located on the upper part of the city. The lot defines to be medium to slightly terrain land with existing river. 2.) Site B is situated in Brgy. Parguan San Jose Antipolo, Rizal covering an area of exactly 43, 575 sq.m. The lot is along one of the major road in Antipolo city, the Provincial road. The lot defines to be slightly flat and adjacent to residential and institute facilities.

3.) Site C is located in Brgy. San Isidro Antipolo, Rizal with a total land area of exactly 36, 269 sq.m. The lot is accessible with Marikina- Infanta Road. The lot is mostly far from the any residential and commercial areas and it was not directly visible to numerous major and minor roads.

Chapter 3.1.3.2 Site Justification

The result of the Likert Scale System conducted by the proponent determines the effective and specific location and site of the proposed project. Site B that was located in Barangay Parguan, San Jose Antipolo, Rizal had gathered the largest number of points in choosing the site allocation for the proposed project. The chosen site will be functional not only to sustain the primary needs of the athletes, but also in the inert significance and importance of the proposed project in relation to the chosen site. This would carry the project more effective and will bring the study to improve.

Chapter 3.2 Site Evaluation and Analysis Chapter 3.2.1 Macro Setting 

History Background

The City was named after a tree locally known as Tipolo (Artocarpus Incisa), which was in abundance in the area in the early times. It was converted from a municipality into a component city of Rizal Province on April 4, 1998, under Republic Act No. 8508. A new provincial capitol building was inaugurated in the city in March 2009 to replace the old capitol in Pasig, which has long been outside the jurisdiction of Rizal Province. With the transfer of the provincial government to Antipolo, it is highly favor to be officially designated as the new capital of the province. On March 14, 2011, President Benigno Aquino declared declared Antipolo Antipolo a “highly “highly-urbanized city”.


Geography and Geology

Antipolo is located in the northern half of Rizal Province, close to its meridional center.

It lies

between latitudes 14° 32' and 14°45' north and longitudes 121° 121° 6' and and 121° 24' east. It is bounded on the north by the municipality of Rodriguez, on the northwest by the Marikina City and San Mateo, on the southwest by the towns of Taytay and Cainta, on the southeast by the towns of Tanay, Teresa and Baras, and on the east by Quezon Province. Antipolo city has the second s econd largest land area in Rizal Province next only to Rodriguez. Its total area of 38,504.44 38,504.44 hectares hectares represents 29.9% 29.9% of Rizal. Climate

Based on the PAGASA (Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Service Administration) or Corona's climate classification system, syst em, Antipolo has a Type I Climate, which is marked by two distinct seasons – the wet season from May to December and the dry season from January to April. The main climatic climatic control operating in the climate of the area is actually actually the monsoon wind wind system. The warm southwest southwest monsoon wind brings rain to the city after gathering moisture from the Indian Ocean, while the cool northeast monsoon moves as a dry wind and comes even drier after crossing the Sierra Madre orographic barrier.



Mineral Sources

The diastrophic folding process that produced the Sierra Madre Mountains has brought mineral deposits and made the crustal substructure nearer to the surface, making them easily mineable.



Water Source

Due to its large size and hilly topography, Antipolo possesses a significant number and variety of water resources like rivers, streams, springs, waterfalls, and groundwater aquifers. In a relatively water-scarce area, these water water bodies provide sources of water water for domestic and industrial uses as well as for irrigation.




The City’s land use was categorized between urban and rural land uses. The urban land

uses (residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, recreational and ecotourism) accounted for 14% of the total land area where residential use was the predominant land use in the City. This accounted for the large number of residential developments, which occupied 4,837.61 hectares representing 12.5% of the City’s total land area. For

commercial uses, these activities were found mostly in the Poblacion in Brgy. San Roque and in Brgy. Mayamot.




Infrastructure and Utilities

Road Netwrok - Antipolo City is linked to Metro Manila by three major national roads:

Sumulong Highway, the Marikina-Infanta Road (MIR), and the Ortigas Extension from the south. All except the MIR lead to the poblacion. poblacion. The MIR traverses traverses through central central Antipolo and extends further further east to Tanay. Other major roads that link Antipolo with its neighbors are the Provincial Road, which links Antipolo to Teresa, and M.L. Quezon St., which extends southward to Angono.

Mode of Transportation- Based on the data from the City Public Utility Vehicle Transport

Regulatory Board, tricycles are the most numerous mode of public transportation with 9,769 or 80% of the entire PUVs in the City. Second is jeepney with 1,744. The number


of FX/AUVs, PUJs and buses decreased comapared to the previous year. Tricycles increased by 2.4%. Overall, the public utilities in the city slightly increased by .20% for the past three years. - Antipolo City is generally supplied with electrical power by MERALCO Power Services since the 1930s. All the barangays in Antipolo Antipolo have electricity. electricity. The water supply system for household consumption of Antipolo comes Water Sources- The from five main sources: Spring Water, Artesian Wells, Open Wells, Wells, Water Tankering and the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS).

The site is situated in Barangay Parguan San Jose Antipolo, Rizal covering an area of exactly 43, 575 sq.m. Barangay San Jose was grouped under the second district of Antipolo City, having a total population of 88, 222 (has of 2010) and and has a total area of 13, 787. 77 ha.

The chosen site falls under level to gently sloping to slightly flat. The greater part of the site was part of the level to very gently sloping. Antipolo is below 500 meters in altitude, the area has an elevation of 175 – 290 meters. The site is very buildable and posses a likable land topography and minimal terrain in the strategic location of the site.

Based on the morphological approach of soil classification or what is called the 7 th Approximation of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the soils of Antipolo may be classified into the soil series and taxonomic names.

The soil situated in the site was the San Luis Clay series that has two phases in Antipolo, namely, the 0 to 2% and 2 to 5% slopes. It is usually deep, well drained and occurs in undulating plateaus. The soil horizon is not more than 20 cm. thick and is reddish brown to very dark grayish brown in color with dark brown to dark reddish mottles. This soil series is vegetated with grass and patched of fruit trees. It covers 1,303.17 hectares or 3.38% of the city.

The selected site was classified as medium density residential zone. The chosen site has the likable area for the proposed project. It was classified under the medium density residential zone because of the number of residential units scattered near the location.

Chapter 3.2.2.1 Image Map

The Image Map will focus with the catchment area of 3 kilometers away from the site. It will feature what will be the coverage of the site with respect to the outside condition of the surroundings where the site located. Under the 3 km catchment zone was covered


almost the total urban area of the municipality of Antipolo. The map will pinpoint the Kevin Lynch’s “Image of the City” to be able to some up all the necessary details and

information.

Landmark – landmarks in Antipolo city are distinctively identified. It was commonly use

by the public and help the users in familiarizing the neighboring places within the vicinity of the site. Some of the common landmarks than are nearby the site are the Dalig National High School, Robinsons Homes, Antipolo Lady Lourdes, Avida Subdivision.

Nodes - Nodes became a prominent feature of the site as well as with its surroundings since it caters different strategic places in the municipality where there’s a great

concentration of people or other type of bodies that meet less than one place. Some of these are Sen. Lorenzo Sumulong Memorial Circle, Claveria Plaza, Uniciano Medical Center, and Antipolo Doctor’s Hospital.

Path - Path was a very important factor for the site allocation and navigation. It serves

as driving tool to the target users in relation to identify and locate the location of the site. These consist of the major and minor roads such as Provincial Road, AntipoloTeresa Morong Road, Circumferencial Road, Sto. Nino Street.

Edges - Edges come in many forms. It may comes from different aspects such as a

welcome arc upon entering to the municipalities and each of the barangays, concrete fences that usually bordered the locality and each of the vacant lot.


District - District directly pertains on the zonal provision or condition of the site and its

surrounding areas that may affect the development of the whole project.

The study will provide analysis on factors affecting the site. These factors are identified and analysed to serve as the basis of site planning. Site analysis will include the solar analysis, wind analysis and noise analysis. The site is surrounded by a residential area. The noise source source coming from from the left side of the site are residential structures. The road from Provincial road will produce vehicular niose.
