FLSmidth has developed the CFS silo for storage of cement and related products based on the experience gained with the CF (Controlled Flow) raw meal blending and storage silo. The keyword in the design of the CFS storage silo is reliability. The challenge facing the designer of a storage silo is to ensure that the silo empties 100%, while keeping the specific power consumption for aeration at a minimum. The CFS meets the challenge in the following way:
•
•
•
The spe specif cific ic pow power er con consum sumpti ption on is kept low by aerating the silo bottom sector by sector. A larg large e part part of the sil silo o conte contents nts is kept in motion during extraction due to the steel cone covering the outlet. BuildBui ld-up up of of mater material ial clo close se to to the the silo silo wall is prevented by filling the corner between the silo bottom and the silo wall with coarse concrete to form an incline of 70 degrees to horizontal. The Th e aerat aeratio ion n segm segmen ents ts slo slope pe 15 15 degrees towards the outlet. Aeration segments segments
As an optional extra, the aeration system may be provided with filters that prevent material from entering and possibly blocking up the entire aeration system.
Technical features Silo diameters ranging from 10 to 20 m are available based on the same configuration. The material is supplied continuously to the silo either by a bucket elevator or by an air controlled lifting device. The top deck of the silo is provided with

all the standard features such as manholes, over- and underpressure valves, and level indicators. The raised bottom of the silo has one centrally positioned outlet covered by a steel cone. This cone has two functions: • •
To relie relieve ve the pre pressu ssure re abo above ve the outlet. To ensure ensure tha thatt a large large part part of of the the silo silo contents is kept in motion during the extraction.
The silo bottom is divided into six triangular segments sloping 15 degrees towards the outlet. Each of the segments is fitted with aeration boxes. One segment at a time is aerated for approximately 5 minutes. The air supply system to each segment may include a filter which cleans the air and prevents material from entering if a pipe breaks inside the silo. The air is supplied to the aeration boxes by a single rotary blower at a pressure of up to 0.8 bar. The air is distributed by a pipe system with six two-way pneumatically actuated valves and six solenoid valves, one set of valves for each bottom segment. The rotary blower is equipped with a noise-reduced blow off pipe which lets out the fluidisation air when the pressure reaches a certain level. The squared extraction outlet through the silo bottom is equipped with aeration pipes in the corners and is designed to allow manual cleaning by means of air lances. The extraction outlet is equipped with a manually operated slide gate. The material enters a feed box via the outlet. The feed box is aerated and equipped with one or more pneumatically regulated flow control gates. These gates close quickly (two seconds) and allow regulation of the flow rates to packers or bulk loading devices. The CFS silo
