Methodology
°°° The objective objective of the the study study was was to ascertain local
political situation and identify inuencing trust factors at SCR and state level, segregated by urban and rural areas, and coupled with some diagnostics on how and why people might vote in a certain way. way. °°° To meet the above objective, a sampling protocol
which was most suitable for capturing the heterogeneity of India’s population base, was adopted. °°° The sampling protocol was designed to provide
estimates for socio-cultural regions and state level, with 95% condence interval and 5% margin of error (desired levels of precision). The main requirements for this are:
N AT I O N A L T R U S T S U R V E Y
Methodology A comprehensive national sample
frame at the most granular level possible (census enumerator blocks in urban and villages in rural) and random selection at every level level of
sample selection (i.e. districts, wards/ villages, households, individuals) °°° The PPS (Probability Proportional
to Size) sampling procedure was adopted for selection of wards and
villages in each SCR. In round 2, the survey was conducted in adjoining PSUs to maintain homogeneity. 31,621 individuals were °°° Total 31,621 surveyed from 287 urban wards and 582 villages, in 62 socio-cultural regions covering 334 parliamentary constituencies, spread over 329 districts across 30 states/UTs states/UTs of India. In dia. °°° Sample collected through survey
was then weighted using national census data for 2011 to correct for over-and over-and under-sampling of certain population sub-groups.

Points considered while conducting survey USE OF SECRET BALLOT (KIND OF): While asking questions on who they voted for or whom they are going to vote for, we handed over the data
capturing device to respondents on which they could mark their choice. The process was designed to ensure that the people interviewed knew they would remain anonymous. TRANSLATION: The questionnaire was further translated in the main language of respondents’ state. Translation was carefully scanned by language expert, so that a question in their state did not have a changed version. Wherever required, show cards and denition sheet were shown to respondents to proceed with
questions in the questionnaire. questionnaire.
The survey was conducted between
2nd March to 22nd March 2019 Length of interview: 25-30 minutes
N AT I O N A L T R U S T S U R V E Y
Definition of SCR (socio--cultura (socio culturall region) region) A socio-cultural region (SCR) is determined by combining factors like linguistic homogeneity i.e. ingroup speech communication, °°°
cultural similarity, historicity
of the region and other sociocultural considerations like castes, SC/ST status etc. °°°
Given that the study was
designed to capture Mood of the Nation coupled with some
diagnostics on how and why people might vote in a certain way, we considered a sampling protocol protocol based on SCR, assuming it would provide estimates based
on homogeneity required to represent India’s vast population
base. °°°
In the present design, it was
also important to capture the
existing heterogeneity among Indian population base across
30 states/UTs, which was also considered while xing the sample size.
