Can tree talk? Yes, but not in words. Scientists have reason to believe that trees do communicate with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First, a willow tree attacked in the woods by caterpillars changed the chemistry of its leave and made them taste so awful that the caterpillars got distinguished and stopped eating them. Then, even more astonishing, the tree sent out special vapors – an alarm signal stimulating its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leave and make them tasty. Communication, of course, doesn’t need to be in words. We can talk to each other by smile, frown, a shrug of our shoulder, a gesture with our hands. We know that birds signals flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar for honey. So, why shouldn’t trees have ways of sending messages?

A - 006 One of the first adjustments you will have to face after your arrival in the United States is “jet lag.” Jet Lag is the physical shock of having to adjust to a new time zone. It is caused by the long airplane flight. After several days (perhaps as long as a week) of disorientation and sleepiness, you will begin to function normally. It takes about one day to adjust for each hour difference in time. Most U.S. training locations are about 9-12 hours different in time. So, do not be surprised if you feel a bit disoriented or unusually tired for a week or more. It is important to report for the training on the specified date, which is usually several days prior to when your instruction will actually begin. This will allow you to adjust and recover from jet lag before the course formally begins. 5. What is the topic of the talk? (A) Jet lag. (B) Physical shock of jet lag. (C) A new time zone. (D) The long airplane flight. 6. From the talk we know that jet lag is caused by … (A) Long trip. (B) Feeling a bit disoriented or unusually tired. (C) Difference time zone. (D) Physical shock.
Listen to this lecture on “culture shock”, given by a university professor. Well, let’s start by a brief definition of “culture shock”. We can define as the physical and emotional discomfort one suffers when coming to live in another country or a place different from the place of origin .This term expresses the lack of direction , the feeling of not knowing what to do or how to do things in a new environment, and not knowing what is appropriate or inappropriate. Living in a new country can be hard, but sometimes you just have to adjust to difficult situations. Generally speaking, we could say that there are four stages to culture shock. First of all, “discovery stage”. Uh, to the visitor, everything seems new and unusual –the food, the surroundings, the buildings. And it produces a feeling of excitement to be in the new environment – a desire to look around, to experiment, and to explore the new culture. In this stage, the individual feels involved in some kind of fantastic adventure.
7. What is the topic of the talk? (A) Discovery stage. (B) A different place in the world. (C) Culture shock. (D) Fantastic adventure. 8. According to the professor, what is the cause of culture shock? (A) Because of different perspective. (B) Because of living in different place of origin. (C) Because of different food we eat. (D) Because we don’t know what is appropriate or inappropriate.

A multiscale microstructural computer model for ionic diffusivity has been previously developed. This model has been developed specifically to compute the chloride diffusivity of concretes with various mixture proportions and projected degrees of hydration. The microstructure is largely controlled by the initial concrete mixture proportions and the ultimate curing conditions. The ionic diffusivity of a concrete is a function of its microstructure at many length scales, ranging from nanometers to millimeters. Linking a property like ionic diffusivity to the microstructure then requires a multiscale approach.

2 3 4 5 The durability of type K and H cement based grouts under conditions potentially found to be in high level nuclear waste repositories was studied. Preliminary results indicate that both hydraulic properties and leaching behavior of the grouts investigated are affected by the increase in temperature. Test have been carried out to determine the effects of temperature on the hydraulic conductivity and the leaching resistance of the grouts. Measurement of mercury intrusion porosimetry and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray analysis have been used to investigate the changes in the pore structures of both grouts as function of leaching and permeating time. Type K and type H cement based grouts, made with low water to cementations material ratio, silica fume, and superplasticizer, were exposed to high temperature and pressure. 2 3 4 5 The features that became Niagara falls were created by the Wisnonsin glaciations, about 10,000 years ago. Scientists believe that there is an old valley, buried by glacial drift, at the approximate location of the present Welland Canal. When the ice melted, the upper Great Lakes emptied into the Niagara River, which followed the rearranged topography across the Niagara Escarpment. The same forces also created the North American great lakes and the Niagara River. All were dug by a continental ice sheet that drove through the area, deepening some river channels to form lakes, and damming others with debris. 2 3 4 5 Although we have this capacity, he says, we are often self-destructive and must channel the seemingly contradictory fusion of violence and peace to address our true animal nature. It is a theme he continually refers back to.

“As martial arts practitioners practice the art of killing, we have a greater awareness and capacity to kill, we have techniques specifically designed to immobilize and destroy. Wong believes we are animals that have evolved to a high level of consciousness, albeit one that is rarely used. So we are very confident because we know we can protect ourselves and our loved ones, but that also gives us the opportunity to be a guardian of peace, a superhero and protector of the community,” he said. 2 3 4 5 Until now, the national pediatricians group has recommended against swimming lessons for very young children on the grounds that there was no evidence that early aquatic lessons reduced the risk of drowning of actually encouraged proficient swimming skills. The AAP cites two recent studies one by researchers at the National institutes of Health and another conducted in rural China suggesting a benefit of early lessons. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) loosened its position on swimming lessons for toddlers younger than 4 year old. But the group’s revised policy statement, published online on Monday, advocates lessons as early as age 1. What’s more, such programs could give parents and young children a false sense of confidence around water, the AAP said. 2 3 4 5 heat exhaustion can sometimes lead to heatstroke, which requires emergency treatment. Severe dehydration is life threatening. Heatstroke occurs when the body fails to regulate its own temperature and body temperature continues to rise, often 10 1050F (40.560C) or higher. A person with heatstroke may stop sweating and other symptoms of heatstroke include confusion or unconsciousness, and skin that is red, hot dry, even under the armpits. Symptoms that require emergency care include altered behavior, such as severe anxiety confusion, or not being able to stay awake, faintness that is not relieved by lying down, or lightheadedness that continues after standing for 2 minutes, weak, rapid pulse, cold, clammy skin or hot, dry skin, loss of consciousness.

Again, there is a strong association between the neighborhood where the family lives and the incidence of violence. However, working women and women with children are more prone to domestic violence. Factors affecting domestic violence against women in four Turkish cities (Adyyaman, Sivas, Denizli and Kyrklareli) having different socioeconomic structures, are analyzed in this study. These factors consist of social, cultural, economic, and psychological factors. In contrast to what we expected based on earlier literature, family income level has a positive relationship with violence. 2 1 4 3

Archeological data from a vast territory over the steppes between the Urals and the Yenisei, suggest that migration was a key factor in population history. The first of them led to the convergence of groups representing various cultures, and eventually to the emergence of the Andronov community. The article explores new approaches to the study of the andronov culture, with special reference to migration. The second wave not only brought about the territorial expansion of the Andronov traditions, but also provided a basis for the emergency of Late Bronze Age rolled pottery and Andronov-type cultures. In the idle Bronze Age, two migration waves from the Irtysh River basin, Kazakhstan, have been reconstructed. 3 1 5 3

TEXT One of the first principles in advertising is that it is limited in both time and space. Television and radio commercials are usually only 10 to 60 seconds long. Print ads are usually no larger than two pages and usually much smaller. Therefore, an advertisement must do its job quickly; it must get the consumers attention, identify the product and deliver the seller's messages in a short time or limited space. In order to do this, advertising often breaks the rules of grammar, images and even society. The second basic point is that advertisements usually have two parts; copy and illustrations. Copy refers to the word in the advertisement. These words give the sales message. Illustrations are the picture or photograph. Most ads are a combination of copy and illustrations. The decision about how much copy and illustration to use depends on how the advertiser wants to present the sales messages. Understanding how advertisers make this decision is complex. First we must understand how human being process or work with information because we do not process all kinds of information in the same way. We process some kinds of information in order to understand it. On the other hand, we process other kinds of information emotionally. This means that we use feelings rather than thinking to understand the information. As there are two kinds of mental process, there are also two basic ways of presenting a sales message: intellectually and emotionally. An intellectual presentation uses ideas to get a consumer to buy a product or service. This kind of ads has a lot of copy. The copy explains to the usage and benefit of the product or service. Such ads usually appear in
70
magazine or newspaper where the consumer has unlimited time to process the information. Ads with an intellectual presentation usually have few illustrations. The second way to present a sales message is emotionally. In an emotional presentation, the use of the product is often not the most important sales message. Instead, the advertisement focuses on the buyer's social, psychological or economics needs. An emotional ad may show how the product or service will make the consumer's social life better by increasing their appeal, making them feel more confident or making those people rich. Some of the most effective ads today are ones that use an emotional presentation.

TEXT 1 The Asian migration hypothesis is today supported by most of the scientific evidence. The first "hard" data linking American Indians with Asians appeared in the 1980s with the finding that Indians and northeast Asians share a common and distinctive pattern in the arrangement of the teeth. But perhaps the most compelling support for the hypothesis comes from genetic research. Studies comparing the DNA variation of populations around the world consistently demonstrate the close genetic relationship of the two populations, and recently geneticists studying a virus sequestered in the kidneys of all humans found that the strain of virus carried by Navajos and Japanese is nearly identical, while that carried by Europeans and Africans is quite different. The migration could have begun over a land bridge connecting the continents. During the last Ice Age 70,000 to 10,000 years ago, huge glaciers locked up massive volumes of water and sea levels were as much as 300 feet lower than today. Asia and North America were joined by a huge subcontinent of ice-free, treeless grassland, 750 miles wide. Geologists have named this area Beringia, from the Bering Straits. Summers there were warm, winters were cold, dry and almost snow-free. This was a perfect environment for large mammalsmammoth and mastodon, bison, horse, reindeer, camel, and saiga (a goatlike antelope). Small bands of Stone Age hunter-gatherers were attracted by these animal populations, which provided them not only with food but with hides for clothing and shelter, dung for fuel, and bones for tools and weapons. Accompanied by a husky-like species of dog, hunting bands gradually moved as far east as the Yukon River basin of northern Canada, where field excavations have uncovered the fossilized jawbones of several dogs and bone tools estimated to be about 27,000 years old. Other evidence suggests that the migration from Asia began about 30,000 years agoaround the same time that Japan and Scandinavia were being settled. This evidence is based on
77
blood type. The vast majority of modern Native Americans have type O blood and a few have type A, but almost none have type B. Because modern Asian populations include all three blood types, however, the migrations must have begun before the evolution of type B, which geneticists believe occurred about 30,000 years ago. By 25,000 years ago human communities were established in western Beringia, which is present-day Alaska. But access to the south was blocked by a huge glacial sheet covering much of what is today Canada. How did the hunters get over those 2,000 miles of deep ice? The argument is that the climate began to warm with the passing of the Ice Age, and about 13,000 B.C.E. glacial melting created an ice-free corridor along the eastern front range of the Rocky Mountains. Soon hunters of big game had reached the Great Plains. In the past several years, however, new archaeological finds along the Pacific coast of North and South America have thrown this theory into question. The most spectacular find, at Monte Verde in southern Chile, produced striking evidence of tool making, house building, rock painting, and human footprints conservatively dated at 12,500 years ago, long before the highway had been cleared of ice. Many archaeologists now believe that migrants moved south in boats along a coastal route rather than overland. These people were probably gatherers and fishers rather than hunters of big game. There were two later migrations into North America. About 5000 B.C.E. the Athapascan or Na-Dene people began to settle the forests in the northwestern area of the continent. Eventually Athapascan speakers, the ancestors of the Navajos and Apaches, migrated across the Great Plains to the Southwest. The final migration began about 3000 B.C.E. after Beringia had been submerged, when a maritime hunting people crossed the Bering Straits in small boats. The Inuits (also known as the Eskimos) colonized the polar coasts of the Arctic, the Yupiks the coast of southwestern Alaska, and the Aleuts the Aleutian Islands. While scientists debate the timing and mapping of these migrations, many Indian people hold to oral traditions that include a long journey from a distant place of origin to a new homeland.

READING COMPREHENSION Text 1 Down syndrome is a congenital (present at birth) disorder characterized by varying degrees of mental retardation and a variety of physical abnormalities.Normally each cell in the human body has to chromosomes the cells in someone with down syndrome however 47 have. In ways not yet known the presence of the extra chromosomes causes all the unusual characteristic of down syndrome. In 95 percent of cases, the condition is called trisomy 21
86
(because the chromosomes is attached to the 21th pair of chromosomes), and the mistake in genetic coding is one that apparently could happen to anyone. In 5% cases, the syndrom caused by a defect that is believed run in families Down syndrome is marked by a number of physical characteristics somewhat started eyes in snall sockets (which way it is used to be called mongolism), a small, short head, flattened in back, trunk, arms and legs, a singlw, rather than a double crease across the top of palm, flabby arms and legs with poor muscle tone, a wide gap between the first and second toes, and generally retarded physical development. A child with down syndrome may have a poorly functioning thyroid gland (which regulates metabolism, the rate at which the body uses energy) and pituitary gland (which regulates other glands including those responsible for growth, maturation and reproduction). About one third are born with heart defects and both the skin and mucous membrane are especially susceptible in infectious. Prospective parents can reduce the chances of having child with down syndrome by starting their families early. At age 20 a woman’s risk of giving birth to a child with down syndrome is only 1 in 2000 live births, but age 35 the chances is 1 in 300, at age 40 is in 100, and at age 45 it is in 1 in 40 lives births. The age of the father also has some beating on the risk, but not as much as the age of the mother. Diagnosis of down syndrome can be made between weeks 16 and 18 of pregnancy through procedure called amniocetensis. During amniocetensis, the doctor will insert a needle through mother’s abdominal wall and into the uterus. A sample of the amniotic fluid is the drawn into syringe, group on a culture plate and analyzed to see if there are abnormal chromosomes. A newer techniques used to check the chromosomes of the growing fetus is called amniocentris chorionic villus sampling. This procedure performed during the eight or nine week of pregnancy involves the removal of a small portions of the placenta by a small instrument inserted through the woman cervix. Woman’s tissue that is obatained can be immediately evaluated for the presence of chromosome abnormalities. 1. READING COMPREHENSION Choose the best answer to each question based on the information which is stated or implied in the text. TEXT 1 Although we can imagine life based on something other than carbon chemistry, we know of no examples to tell us how such life might arise and survive. We must limit our discussion to life as we know it and the conditions it requires. The most important requirement is the presence of liquid water, not only as part of the chemical reactions of life, but also as a medium to transport nutrients and wastes within the organism. The water requirement automatically eliminates many worlds in our solar system. The moon is airless, and although some data suggest ice frozen in the soil at its poles, it has never had liquid water on its surface. In the vacuum of the lunar surface, liquid water would boil away rapidly. Mercury too is airless and cannot have had liquid water on its surface for long periods of time. Venus has some traces of water vapor in its atmosphere, but it is much too hot for liquid water to survive. If there were any lakes or oceans of water on its
92
surface when it was young, they must have evaporated quickly. Even if life began there, no traces would be left now. The inner solar system seems too hot, and the outer solar system seems too cold. The Jovian planets have deep atmospheres, and at a certain level, they have moderate temperatures where water might condense into liquid droplets. But it seems unlikely that life could begin there. The Jovian planets have no surfaces where oceans could nurture the beginning of life, and currents in the atmosphere seem destined to circulate gas and water droplets from regions of moderate temperature to other levels that are much too hot or too cold for life to survive. A few of the satellites of the Jovian planets might have suitable conditions for life. Jupiter’s moon Europa seems to have a liquid-water ocean below its icy crust, and minerals dissolved in that water would provide a rich broth of possibilities for chemical evolution. Nevertheless, Europa is not a promising site to search for life because conditions may not have remained stable for the billions of years needed for life to evolve beyond the microscopic stage. If Jupiter’s moons interact gravitationally and modify their orbits, Europa may have been frozen solid at some points in history. Saturn’s moon Titan has an atmosphere of nitrogen, argon, and methane and may have oceans of liquid methane and ethane on its surface. The chemistry of life that might crawl or swim on such a world is unknown, but life there may be unlikely because of the temperature. The surface of Titan is a deadly -179°C (-290°F). Chemical reactions occur slowly or not at all at such low temperatures, so the chemical evolution needed to begin life may never have occurred on Titan. Mars is the most likely place for life in our solar system. The evidence, however, is not encouraging. Meteorite ALH84001 was found on the Antarctic ice in 1984. It was probably part of debris ejected into space by a large impact on Mars. ALH84001 is important because a team of scientists studied it and announced in 1996 that it contained chemical and physical traces of ancient life on Mars. Scientists were excited too, but being professionally skeptical, they began testing the results immediately. In many cases, the results did not confirm the conclusion that life once existed on Mars. Some chemical contamination from water on Earth has occurred, and some chemicals in the meteorite may have originated without the presence of life. The physical features that look like fossil bacteria may be mineral formations in the rock. Spacecraft now visiting Mars may help us understand the past history of water there and paint a more detailed picture of present conditions. Nevertheless, conclusive evidence may have to wait until a geologist in a space suit can wander the dry streambeds of Mars cracking open rocks and searching for fossils. We are left to conclude that, so far as we know, our solar system is bare of life except for Earth. Consequently, our search for life in the universe takes us to other planetary systems.

In general, a small museum will usually only have one curator overseeing the entire facility, while a larger museum will usually hire several curators to oversee the different sections. Museum curators can be found in nearly every type of museum there is, including art museums, history museums, and even children’s museums. Without a curator, a museum would have a very difficult time opening its doors to the public each and every day.
