CHAPTER 1: PROJECT IDEA & NEED The basic idea behind this project is to create an interactive web application where the users can test their abilities in the different areas of education. In addition to this, the motive here is to put different types of exam, so user can evaluate his/her performance & also provides user to search and view tutorials, do video conference. There are number of such portals over the internet, offering different kind of functionalities. The main aim here is to provide most of the functionalities on a single platform.

2.1.2 OVERALL DESCRIPTION
E-learning is a form of distance learning where education and training courses are delivered using computer technology. Typically, this means that courses are delivered either via the Internet, or on computer networks (linked computers). With the increased availability of PCs and Internet access, e-learning is becoming more and more popular. E-Learning is a web application uses JSP. The database is MySQL. This online application enables the end users to register online, select the subject, read the tutorial and appear for the exam online. The results of the exams are also declared just after taking the test. Marks of the candidate are displayed just after submitting of an exam. The correct answers for the questions are displayed after the exam. The date of the registration, date of exam, number of attempts, test result etc. is stored in the database.
Contemporary trends in e -learning The growing interest in e -learning seems to be be coming from several directions. These include organizations organizations that have have traditionally offered distance education programs programs either in a single, dual or mixed mode setting. They see the incorporation of online learning in their repertoire as a logical extension of their distance education activities. The corporate sector, on the other hand, is interested in e-learning as a way of rationalizing the costs of their in -house staff training activities. E-learning is of interest to residential campus- based based educational organizations as well. They see e-learning as a way of improving access to their programs and also as a way of tapping into growing niche markets. The growth of e -learning is directly related to the increasing access to information and communications technology, as well it‟s decreasing cost. The capacity of information and communications technology to support multimedia resource - based based learning and teaching is also relevant to the growing interest in e -learning. Growing numbers of teachers are increasingly using information and communications technology to support their teaching. Educational organizations to see advantages in making their programs accessible via a range of distributed locations, including on- campus, home and other community learning or resource centres.
Understanding of existing system Shows educators and trainers how to adapt teaching methods and materi als to make use of the Internet. Including a framework showing how to apply Internet technology progressively as skills and confidence grow, the project demonstrates the route from adapting materials to developing a virtual course. Nowadays, when people are not having time to visit an institute. Therefore, the software is designed to provide the education through Internet. The project “E – LEARNING” helps the common world in any field they are to get the knowledge what they want even sitting at there places. This helps them to spare time in their busy schedule and save their time during transportation

2.2 GOALS OF IMPLEMNTATION Education through the internet, network and a computer is E -learning. This helps in network enabled transfer of skills and knowledge. E -learning refers to use of electronic applications and processes to learn. This is a web based application which can be hosted in the website of any training institute. The students will be able t o register online, read the course material and write online exam. 2.4 NON-FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMNTS Flexibility:
A key attribute of the system is its ability to enable flexible access to information and resources. Flexible access of resource means E -Learning System can be used in any operating system, any browser with some basic requirements. The server for this system is running 24*7 all the time. A person across the globe can use this system. Security Requirements:
Only authorized person can view and modify confidential details. User can only activate his/her account after visiting activation link sent to his/her email account, so there is no chance of having a fake email id. One user cannot access other user‟s account. Faculty can only upload material after admin approve it. User has to enter his old password for changing his password. User can only recover his/her password after entering his/her email id which he/she has entered at the time of registration. Scalability Requirements:
The system must be scalable enough to be able to add any additional functionality even after the project is developed once. Usability Requirements:
The application is user -friendly and provides ease of access for users. There are set of FAQs set by Admin of the system which guides the user, if user find some trouble in accessing a system. Extensibility
The system should be designed to be extensible to changes. A change might be a result of either a change in the user requirements or upgrading of system. Addition of new modules should be smooth and easy. Performance Requirements
The system is to be used as a web application and targets users across the globe, so it is expected to be robust i.e. up and running all the time. Session Control
It refers to the practice of session removal and session retain while navigating through various screens during user interaction. As access control is a prime need of the system, the session should restrict access according to the privileges defined for the user. It provides a mechanism in which if user‟s system crashes while performing an exam, user can continue his/her exam from the failure state when system recovers from a failure.

2.5 FEASIBILITY STUDY
An important outcome of the preliminary investigation is the determination that the system is feasible or not. The main aim of the feasibility study activity is to determine whether it would be financially and technically feasible to develop a project .The feasibility study activity involves the analysis of the problem and collection of all relevant information relating to the product such as the different data items which would be input to the system, the processing required to be carried out on these data, the output required to be produced by the system as well as the various constraints on the behaviour of the s ystem. Three types of project feasibility have been considered:
Economic Feasibility The system being developed is economic with respect to user‟s point of view. It is cost effective in the sense that has eliminated the paper work & transportation cost completely. The system is also time effective because the marks calculations are automated and result of the exam is generated in no time, the result obtained contains minimum errors and are highly accurate as the data is required.
Technical Feasibility The technical requirement for the system is economic and it does not use any additional Hardware and software.
Behavioural Feasibility The system working is quite easy to use and learn due to its simple but attractive interface. User requires no special training for operating the system.

Waterfall Model is one of the most widely used Software Development Process. It is also called as "Linear Sequential model " or the "classic life cycle" or iterative model. It is widely used in the commercial development projects. It is called so because here, we move to next phase (step) after getting input from previous phase, like in a waterfall, water flows down to from the upper steps.

The detailed description of these phases is as follows:
Requirement analysis & Specification: The system‟s services, constraints and goals are established by consultation with admin, faculty and user. They are then defined in detail and serve as a system specification. Here all the requirements of the E-Learning System from the user are clearly gathered by me which will be used by the other software phases. System must fulfil functional requirements specified by user. These are functional and non -functional requirements. Functional requirements for this system are as follows: online exam, video conference, tutorial download, and non -functional requirements include security requirements, flexibility, performance, session control. Design: Development of a plan. How the requirements can be implemented? This process heavily depends on the chosen modelling techniques like ER,Data Flow, Sequence, Use cases and the programming language as jsp, servlet and environment characteristics such as hardware and software.to be used. It establishes overall system architecture. Determines the software framework of a system to meet the specific requirements. Implementation: Development of program text that can be compiled into executable code including testing on the module level. Developers implement the functionality of the E-learning System which will be tested in the testing phase. Testing: Testing the software product against its requirements. The individual program unit or programs are integrated and tested as a complete system to ensure that the software requirements have been met. After testing, the software system is delivered to the customer. Implemented E -learning System is now tested against user‟s requirements so that it is delivered to the intended user.
