Dust Concentration Meter D-R 300-40 Special application Modified software P6.0 according to EPA requirements
Following requirements exist: • • •
A relay output signal has to be provided showing normal / abnormal mode A relay output signal has to be provided showing measuring / control mode A digital input signal has to be provided for manual start of the Control Cycle
When using the evaluation software P6.0 with the D-R 300-40 the following change in the behaviour of the relay in- and outputs can be achieved, provided that the limit value GW2 is set to 3 mA and the ‘Input Burner OFF’-input (terminals 13,14) is closed: • • •
• •
After Start-up of the unit the Control Cycle is activated only once. The Control Cycle is not repeated automatically. Whenever the ‘Input Burner OFF’-input is opened the Control Cycle is performed. When the ‘Input Burner OFF’-input remains opened the Control Cycle will be repeated every 4 hours automatically. During normal measurement the value is equal to or above 4 mA. As this is above 3 mA the relay ‘Limit Value GW2’ will be activated (terminal 8,9 closed). During the Control Cycle the limit value supervision is disabled. Therefore, the relay ‘Limit Value GW2’ will be deactivated (terminal 8,9 opened) during the Control Cycle. The relay ‘Burner off/Measuring’ remains unchanged: Terminal 11,12 closed while in normal operation. The relay ‘Limit Value GW1’ remains unchanged: Terminal 5, 6 and 10,11 closed while in faulty condition.

Application
The DURAG D-R 300-40 Dust Concentration Meter is used for continuous measuring of dust emissions in dust extraction channels, flue gas chimneys, etc., and at incineration plants for waste products and similar combustible materials as per BlmSchV. # 17. It does not only monitor the effectiveness of the filtering installation through recording the residual dust quantity, but it also signals without inertia unpermissible exceedings of heavy dust or flue gas emissions. This often permits direct intervention in the process of the plant to be monitored, so guaranteeing secure observance of the specified limit values. The DURAG D-R 300-40 Dust Concentration Meter has been suitability tested by TÜV Rheinland, Test Report #936/801004 dated 31/07/1992. Itemized in the list of suitable measuring instruments for continuous monitoring of emissions GMBI No. 45 of 1992. Supplementary testing for automatic measuring range changeover by TÜV Rheinland, Test Report #936/803011 of 15/07/1993. GMBI No. 43 of 1993. Supplementary testing for higher dust concentration and facilities for manufacture of cement by TÜV Rheinland, Test Report #936/804020 dated 01/03/1995. The measuring system is designed, made and tested for application in not explosive zones.

Functional Description
The D-R 300-40 Dust Concentration Meter works to the in-situ stray light method. The unit is flange-mounted directly to the measuring channel. Measuring proceeds contactless, continuously and without sample taking in the flue gas flow. The modulated light of a halogen lamp is emitted in the measuring channel under a 30° angle and lightens the dust particles in the measuring volume. The dust particles contained in that area reflect (stray) the light. The stray light reflected is picked up by the receiver optics under a 30° angle and is guided onto an optical collector. The signal current generated by the collector is proportional to the intensity of the stray light received. The relation of the measured stray light intensity to the intensity of the emitted light corresponds with the particle density in the measuring volume. The area volume used for measuring lies within the range of between 80 to 280 mm distance from the chimney wall, whereby the maximum volume lies at 150 mm distance. The inevitable intensity drifts of the optical collector and of the halogen lamp, conditional on ageing and temperature influences, are automatically compensated by the unit. To that end, the modulator glass is shaped in a way that in the 'measuring'-phase, stray light from the measuring area arrives at the optical collector by way of the receiver optics. In the 'comparison'-phase, the optical collector is directly lighted with comparison light by way of a light guide. For the purpose of checking proper functioning of the D-R 300-40, periodical control cycles are carried out once every 4 hours. During each cycle the zero point, the grade of soiling of the optical boundary areas and a reference measuring value are measured and indicated automatically. For this check-out, swing shutters mask the light outlet and inlet apertures on the instrument side. At the same time, the swing shutters release the hitherto closed reference beam passage with the reference filter for control measurements. The metering results of the subsequent measurings are corrected by the measured grade of soiling. If a predefined soiling grade is being surpassed, a fault message will be issued in addition. From the stray light received and the intensity of the emitter lamp (comparison light), the topped digital evaluator electronics calculate the dust concentration in the measuring volume. The computed variable is indicated as a digital value on a 4-digit display and is also delivered as an analog current signal. The measuring result can be calibrated and read out as a value of dust concentration.

System Components D-R 300-40
The D-R 300-40 Measuring System includes the following system components: 1. Measuring instrument D-R 300-40 The emitter and receiver optics and the electronics are fitted in a strong aluminium housing to form a compact module. This measuring unit is mounted directly to the mounting flange of the flue gas channel's measuring aperture. 2. Light trap Opposing the measuring unit a light trap is installed for suppressing interfering reflexes at the inner walls of small diameter chimneys, which could falsify the measuring result. The light trap must be so insulated that dew point shortfalls in the light trap are precluded, particularly at outdoor installations. 3. Purge air unit At the metering location the measuring unit is supplied with filtered purge air from the purge air unit through a hose connection. This purge air keeps the optical boundary areas of the D-R 300-40 emitter and receiver optics clean. 4. Appliance connection box Electric connection of the D-R 300-40 measuring system proceeds at the appliance connection box, which comes fitted with an indicator display and keys for system operation.
Optional: 5. Recorder Also required is a plotter device for recording the current measuring and check values. However, the output values and status signals can also be processed by a topped emission computer. 6. Fail-safe shutter D-SK 310 As an option, a D-SK 310 fail-safe shutter can be installed between the mounting flange and the D-R 300-40 unit. In incident cases (purge air outage), this mechanical shutter can instantly close the path between the measuring unit and the exhaust gas, so protecting the measuring device. 7. Control electronics D-SK AE Each fail-safe shutter requires a D-SK AE electronic control module, which contains the electrical connection and the power supply for the fail-safe shutter. 8. Weather-protective covers For outdoor installation, weather-protective covers can be supplied for safeguarding the measuring system and the purge air unit.

Selection of the measuring location
Technical conditions at the different chimneys, boiler or dust extraction plants vary considerably. It is fundamentally recommendable to have a competent measuring institute (e.g. TÜV) determine the appropriate measuring location. It is to be observed that a possibly homogenous dust and flue gas distribution prevails at the installation point of the D-R 300-40 in the measuring channel and that dew point of the flue gases is not fallen short of. The light trap must be insulated in such a way, that dew point shortfalls in the light trap are precluded. Also to be taken into account are the mounting possibilities for the light trap, the purge air unit and - if necessary - a fail-safe shutter, as well as the swivelling range of the measuring unit for maintenance purposes. The inflow traject (channel length before the measuring location) and the outflow traject (channel length behind the measuring location) should at least be 3D (D = interior diameter of the channel). If this space is not available, the inflow traject must be longer than the outflow end. If a measuring location is sought between the filter and the suction draught, the mounting location should preferably lie in the direction of the suction draught, not in filter direction. For outdoor installation of the measuring instrument and the purge air unit, corresponding weather-protective covers can be supplied. The measuring location must be safely accessible not only for system initiation and calibration tasks, but also for eventual maintenance and servicing.
PRECAUTION If the measuring device is to operate at exhaust gas channels or chimneys in which overpressure prevails, interruption of the purge air supply may cause damage to the measuring instrument. Installation of a D-SK 310 fail-safe shutter between the mounting flange and the measuring unit offers effective protection against damages. At mains power outage or at purge air failings this shutter moves into its closing position. When fitting a fail-safe shutter it must be observed that this protection device can only be fixed to a mounting flange with longer bolts. In the case of later fitting, the mounting of a new flange is recommendable if necessary.

Mounting to a vertical channel
At vertical exhaust channels, the D-R 300-40 unit should be installed vertically in axial direction, so that outlet of the appliance connection cable runs downward. The cables must be laid in a loop so as to permit the measuring unit to be swivelled at its mounting location for maintenance purposes. For vertical outdoor mounting of the measuring unit, a type D-WSH 300 VM weather protective cover can be offered. Particularly with outdoor mountings, the light trap must be insulated in such way that dew point shortfalls in the light trap are precluded.

Mounting of the light trap
When using the D-R 300-40 system, special attention must be paid to the suppression of interfering light, so as to avoid falsification of the measuring results. To that end, a light trap that absorbs the undesired interfering light can be installed opposite the emitter optics. In the case of larger chimney dimensions and / or when placing the D-R 300-40 at a channel bend, installation of a light trap can be abstained from. The required length of the light trap depends on the diameter of the chimney and on the measuring range selected through the measuring range diaphragm. The following table shows the length of the light trap tube for the measuring range of 0 (the most sensitive range without a diaphragm).

The location for mounting the light trap depends on the dimensions of the chimney. It is calculated from the following formula:
For instance: Diameter 'D' = 600 mm = chimney diameter + mounting flange When installing a D-SK 310 fail-safe shutter, the diameter 'D' for calculating the location of mounting must be increased by 15 mm.

Electrical connection D-R 300-40
Electrical connection of the D-R 300-40 inside the appliance connection box proceeds by way of a 20-channel terminal strip as per the wiring diagram. Electrical connection between the measuring unit and the appliance connection box runs through 2 cable lines with a plug connection (cable length approx. 1.8 m). The cables for mains, status signals, recorder outputs and relay contacts must be laid separately. If the 'Burner OFF'-input is not used, the input must be bridged. If the terminals 15 and 16 are not utilized, they must be bridged as well.

7.1.
Self-check
Page 16
After switch-on, the D-R 300-40 performs a self test. For the duration of this testing procedure the display shows the indication 'SELF' and the current outputs 1 and 2 are kept at a value of 2 mA. 7.2.
Control cycle
After the self test, a 6 minutes long control cycle is carried through, consisting of a zero point, a soiling and a reference point control. The unit also performs this control cycle automatically every 4 hours. For the duration of the checking’s, the contact of the status output stands in its 'Measurement OFF' setting. During the automatic control procedures, operation by the keys in the appliance connection box remains blocked. 7.3.
Zero point control
The automatic control cycle begins with the 2 minutes long zero point control. For the duration of zero point controlling the emitter-side swing shutter closes the light outlet aperture to the measuring area. The receiver-side light entering aperture stays open towards the measuring area. The zero point in the measuring area is now measured. 7.4.
Soiling control
The zero point control is followed by a 2 minutes long soiling control. On the receiver side the light entry aperture towards the measuring volume is closed. Simultaneously, the swing shutter on the receiver side releases the previously closed reference beam passage with the reference filter. The soiling control now compares the quantity of light actually measured in the reference beam passage with the stored reference value for soiling control (light quantity without soiling) and determines/reads out the loss of reference light caused by soiling. The results of subsequent measurings will be corrected by the value of the soiling measured. 7.5.
Reference point control
The soiling control is followed by 2 minutes of reference point controlling, whereby the value of the reference filter - corrected by the value of soiling - is read out. This reference value should be reproducible at every measuring procedure. 7.6.
Measuring mode
After a 6 minutes' period the automatic control process is completed and the system will switch back to the measuring mode. On the unit side the swing shutters open the light outlet and inlet apertures toward the measuring volume, at the same time closing the reference beam passage. The status output contact switches from the 'Measurement OFF' to the 'Measurement ON' setting.
GmbH
D-R 300-40 7.7.
Page 17
Measuring process interruption
By way of a status input, the D-R 300-40 offers the possibility of interrupting the measuring process for maintenance purposes and the like. Interruption proceeds by way of the 'Burner OFF' status input (cutting of the connection between terminals 13 and 14). The swing shutters close the light entry and outlet apertures on the unitside. This will protect the measuring system's optical boundary areas against soiling. So as to mark the interruption, the measuring value outputs for recording are kept on a value of 2 mA. As an optical indication, 4 bars '- - - -' flash in the display. For the duration of the interruption the contact of the status output stands in the 'Measurement OFF' setting. When the measuring mode is reinstated by way of the 'Burner OFF' status input (connection between terminals 13 and 14), after a preadjustable masking time for measuring start-up the unit-side light apertures towards the measuring volume will be opened and measuring is taken up again. The contact of the status output switches from the 'Measurement OFF' to the 'Measurement ON' setting.
8.
Recording of measured values
The D-R 300-40 delivers the momentary value of the measurement as an analog current signal. As per TA-Luft, continuous recording of the measured values is to be provided for. Suitable for recording are plotters (0-20 mA) of a 100 mm minimal recording width, corresponding with quality class 1.0 to VDE 0410. The indication zero point (live zero) lies at 20% (4 mA) of the recording scale. However, the measured values and status signals delivered can also be processed by a connected emission computer (also see Application to BlmSchV #17). At the D-R 300-40, the integration time (mean value formation) of the measuring value is adjustable over a time period of 10 to 900 seconds.

Attention! As long as the LED of the 'MOD'-key flashes, operation through the keys is blocked. The swivel shutters move into an other position. The new end positions of the shutters having been reached, operation through the keys will be released again.
9.2.
Data storage / Data entering
Inside the D-R 300-40 unit there is a switch S2 for releasing the storage of data. This toggle switch, located on the upper pc-board inside the measuring unit, can be actuated after the housing cover having been opened. If the switch stands in the Entry-setting, the red 'Entry'-signal LED next to the switch lights up and the values stored can then be changed. 1.
Actuation of the 'MOD' key leads to switching from the 'Measuring' mode to the 'Indicate' mode. The 'MOD'-key LED will light up.
2.
With the '+'-key, the desired value will be displayed and the corresponding indicator-LED lights up.
3.
Actuation of the 'STO'-key leads to switching to the 'Entry' mode. The key-LED 'STO' lights up.
4.
The valency digit flashing in the display field will be permanently run up for as long as the '+'-key is being actuated. When this running-up has passed digit 9, the figure 0 will appear. With the 'I'-key, the flashing valency position can be shifted to the left by one digit, so as to permit applying the same modification to the figure of the following position. Once the highest valency figure will have been arrived at, the system will automatically switch over to the lowest valency figure again.
5.
Storage of the changed value and switching back to the 'Indication' mode is done by once again actuating the 'STO'-key. The 'STO'-key LED will go off.
6.
Actuation of the 'MOD'-key will effect a switch-back from the 'Indication' mode to the 'Measuring' mode. The 'MOD'-key LED goes off and the actual measured value will appear in the display. If before storage of the changed values a switch-back from the 'Entry' mode to the 'Measuring' mode has been carried out with the 'MOD'-key, no storage of the changed values will take place.
7.
After completion of the data entering procedure, the 'Enter' facility must to be blocked again through actuation of the toggle switch for data entry release. The red 'Entry'-LED will go off.

Limit values
Two adjustable limit values are at disposal, each of which can be adjusted independently in steps of 0.1 mA over the entire measuring range (see 'Data Storage / Data Entering'). The stored limit values can be called-in through actuation of the 'MOD' and '+' keys. The corresponding limit value LED lights up. Renewed actuation of the 'MOD'-key leads again to indication of the actual measuring value. If the limit values are exceeded, the pertaining relay contact will respond for the duration of the exceeding and the corresponding limit value-LED will flash. In the 'automatic measuring range switch-over' mode (application to BlmSchV.#17), the limit values are deactivated and the limit value contacts are used for generating status signals for the measuring range switch-over. 9.4.
Masking time
By way of the 'Burner OFF' status input, the D-R 300-40 offers the possibility of interrupting measurements for maintenance purposes. At the end of the interruption, reinstatement of measurings will be delayed for the duration of the preset masking time. This masking time for measuring can be adjusted from 10 to 900 seconds in 10second steps (see Data Storage / Data Entering). The stored masking time is called up through actuation of the 'MOD' and '+'-keys, whereby the 'ABZ' indicator-LED lights up. Renewed actuation of the 'MOD'-key leads again to indication of the actual measuring value.

Integration time
At the D-R 300-40 the integration time of the measuring value can be adjusted from 10 to 900 seconds in 10-second steps (Data storage/Data entering). The stored integration time is called up by actuation of the 'MOD' and '+'-keys, whereby the 'INTG' indicator-LED lights up. Renewed actuation of the 'MOD'-key leads again to indication of the actual measuring value. 9.6.
Storing the reference value for the soiling control (VS)
Soiling control is called in with the 'MOD' and '+' keys; the 'VS' (soiling) -LED lights up. When the 'MOD'-LED no longer flashes, the soiling value will appear in the display field. If the existing reference filter is replaced, the new reference value for the VS (soiling) control must be stored. Switching-over to the data entering mode is done by actuating the 'STO' key. The 'STO'-key LED lights up and in the 4-digit display the message ' -CAL ' appears. Storage of the reference value proceeds through renewed actuation of the 'STO'-key. The indicator value changes to 4.0 mA.
10.
Measuring ranges
Actuation of the 'MOD'-key leads to indication of the size of the installed measuring range diaphragm, whereby the 'MBR' indication-LED will light up. Renewed actuation of the 'MOD'-key leads to indication of the actual measuring value again. A possible adaption to the measuring process of the measuring range is done by changing the measuring range diaphragms. If measuring is to be more sensitive (more extensive indication), a wider diaphragm must be installed, resp. the existing diaphragm must be removed (corresponds to diaphragm 45). If measuring is to be less sensitive (less extensive indication), a narrower diaphragm must be installed. The grading steps between the diaphragms correspond with a change of measuring range by the factor of 1.5. Access to the measuring range diaphragm is obtained through disengaging the 4 snap fasteners at the measuring unit and swinging the unit open. The diaphragm sits in the light entrance aperture in front of the receiver optics. It can be replaced after removal of the locking ring. After inserting the new diaphragm it must be secured with the locking ring. If the existing measuring range diaphragm has been exchanged, the size of the installed diaphragm must be stored (see Data storage / Data Entering). After diaphragm change the linearity of the D-R 300-40 Dust Concentration Meter should be checked with the help of the D-R 300-80 Control Unit. This control unit comes with a separate operation manual for checking and adjustment of the linearity.

System application to BlmSchV #17 (optional)
Dust measuring instruments that are utilized at plants to BlmSchV #17 must comply with the following requirements: The measuring equipment shall cover a measuring range of up to 1.5-fold the emission limit value for the day average value (limit value 10 mg/m³) and the half hour average value (limit value 30 mg/m³). Furthermore, in cases of exhaust gas purification system outages the measuring instrument shall register surpassings of the emission limit value (150 mg/m³) valid for the outage periods for the half hour average values. To that end, the D-R 300-40 measuring system can be fitted with three electronically re-switchable measuring ranges as an option, whereby the automatic switch-overs are indicated through status signals. The read out measured values and status signals can be processed by a topped emission computer, e.g. the D-MS 285. The selected measuring range diaphragm (s. Measuring Range) determines the measuring range for the day average value (BR1). The measuring range for the half hour average values (BR2) is reduced by the factor 3. In case of an exhaust gas purification system outage, the measuring range for the half hour average value (BR3) is again reduced by the factor 3. This means that in the BR3 measuring range the sensitivity is less by the factor 9 as compared to the BR1 measuring range. 11.1. Releasing the measuring range change-over Release of the automatic change-over between the BR1 and BR2 measuring ranges is activated by setting limit value II to 23.0 mA. Change-overs between the BR1, BR2 and BR3 measuring ranges is activated by setting limit value II to 24.0 mA (Data storage / Data entering).

11.2. Current and status outputs The D-R 300-40 has two current outputs: output 1 for the measuring range BR1 (most sensitive range) and the switchable current output 2 for the measuring ranges BR2 (sensitivity 1/3rd) and BR3 (sensitivity 1/9th) with the reduced sensitivity grades. If the measured value surpasses the BR1 measuring range (current output 1 ≥ 20 mA), limit value contact I (GW I) will close for the duration of the deviation. If the measured value surpasses the BR2 measuring range (current output 2 ≥ 20 mA), limit value contact II (GW II) will close for the duration of surpassing the BR2 measuring range; during this surpassing, the actual measuring value in the BR3 measuring range will be read out by way of current output 2. The display shows the measured value in the respective actual measuring range, whereby the first digit in the display shows the identification code of the actual measuring range.

Maintenance
The D-R 300-40 is a low-maintenance measuring system with long service intervals. These intervals are conditional of the plant to be monitored and, as a rule, span several weeks. They depend on the pressure conditions, environment resp. climatic conditions at the measuring location and on the type of measuring medium. Regardless of the foregoing, however, a check-up should be carried out once every four weeks. Servicing of the D-R 300-40 at said maintenance intervals shall include checking of the fail-safe shutter facility. A maintenance run should be carried out in the following order of sequence: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
8.
9.
Cleaning of the external equipment components Function test of the fail-safe shutter. Checking of the lockings, seals and threaded connections. Checking of the purge air unit and of the hose connections on tightness and firm fit. Visual check of the prefilter: no tools are required for emptying the filter. The filter element of the main filter can be cleaned repeatedly before having to be changed. The maintenance intervals of the filters depend on the quality of the suction air. Cleaning of the end glasses and reference filter: to that end, the measuring unit can be tilted down once the four quick-catch locks have been unlatched. Cleaning of the end glasses and reference filter should be done with a clean optical cloth. Possible deposits in the guide notch of the cover flap of the chimney-side purge air outlets or in the light trap must be removed. Dirt can be removed with a brush or a cloth and residueless-drying detergents (e.g. dish washer detergent). In no case use solvents acting upon aluminium and teflon. Checking of the light trap: After opening the quick-catch locks, the lid with the light trap insert is to be freed from possible deposits.
It is recommended to conclude with DURAG a service contract for the D-R 300-40 Dust Concentration Meter. Initiation of the measuring unit can also be done by DURAG on condition that the welding jobs and the electrical installation have been completed.

Purge air unit
The purge air unit serves for avoiding premature soiling of the optical boundary areas and as a thermal protection of the unit against exhaust gases. Also at plants with operation related natural negative pressure, boiler stand stills, suction draught failure or at plant start-ups, soiling may occur at the measuring unit if no purge air unit is installed. The following points must be observed when selecting the mounting location: The suction air must be possibly dust-free and dry. The temperature of the suction air shall not exceed 40°C. When mounting, the horizontal positioning of the pre-filter marking must be observed. Free space for filter exchange must be provided for (s. (Fig. 13) Dimensional drawing Purge Air Unit). For outdoor mounting of the purge air unit a weather-protective cover can be offered. Caution! For electrical installation, strict observance of the following points is prerequisite: • • • • • •
All tasks must be carried out in dead state. Compare the mains voltage and the mains frequency with the unit's type tag. Connection and arrangement of the switching clips must be in accordance with the wiring diagram in the terminal box cover. Connect the protective conductor to the earth terminal. Set the protective motor switch (not in the scope of delivery) to the rated motor current. Check the rotation direction of the blower motor.
ATTENTION The purge air unit must always remain switched on for as long as the D-R 30040 is mounted at its location, also when the plant is switched off. This means that the purge air unit should be fuse-protected separately from the D-R 30040 unit.

Fail-Safe Shutter System D-SK 310
If the D-R 300 system is operated in a waste gas channel or a stack in which excessive pressure is predominant, a failure of the purge air supply may cause the measuring device to suffer damage or even destruction. The D-SK 310 fail-safe shutter system may be employed to protect equipment against such conditions. The D-SK 310 fail-safe shutter system consists essentially of the motorised D-SK 310 M fail-safe shutter, the D-SK AE control electronics and the F3 air flow sensor. The D-R 300 and D-R 300-40 measuring units are designed such that the D-SK 310 M fail-safe shutter may be installed between the mounting flange and the measuring equipment. Installing the D-SK 310 M fail-safe shutter enables the path between the measuring equipment and the waste gas to be mechanically sealed in case of error (failure of power or purge air supply). The measuring equipment may thus be protected in the case of malfunction until the error has been corrected. Because of the danger of overheating, a measuring device must never be allowed to remain in the waste gas channel for a long period without any purge air. 17.1. Function After power has been supplied (charge state of the batteries must be observed) and purge air is available, the shutter is automatically moved to the “OPEN” position. If the power supply or purge air fails, the shutter is moved to the “CLOSED” position. The D-SK AE control electronics are available is this case to provide the required auxiliary power via maintenance-free storage batteries. Once the error is corrected, the shutter is again automatically moved to the “OPEN” position. The status response signal “shutter OPEN” occurs via terminals 7 and 8 (connection closed). The response signal regarding shutter position occurs via cam controllers in the drive actuator. The charge state of the storage batteries is displayed on the front panel by the red “battery check” LED. The LED is continuously illuminated during rapid charging and off during float charging. The LEDs zy show only the triggering, not the shutter position. The feedback of the shutter position is given by cam switch in the driver. The shutter may also be closed manually by pushing the “hand” key on the front panel of the control electronics. A test of the D-SK 310 fail-safe shutter system may be performed via the status input “close shutter” (terminals 16 and 17). If the connection between terminals 16 and 17 is opened, the shutter automatically moves to the “CLOSED” position. The status response signal “shutter CLOSED” occurs via terminals 7 and 9 (connection closed). The shutter may automatically be checked for proper operation using either a measuring system topped by an emissions evaluator (DURAG D-MS 285 or D-MS 500) or the status contact used for signalling tests in the measuring unit.

17.2. Installation
The following points must be observed during installation! When installing the D-SK 310 fail-safe shutter system, one must take into account that the D-SK 310 M shutter can only be mounted to a flange with lengthened bolts (approx. 55 mm). During retrofitting, it is recommended that a new mounting flange be installed if necessary. The mounting of the fail-safe shutters should occur at no more than 90° from the horizontal. A D-SK 310 fail-safe shutter system needs to be mounted on both the measuring head and the reflector flanges, each with its own D-SK AE control electronics. Open the status input relay between terminals 16 and 17 to close the shutter. The D-SK AE control electronics are connected to the fail-safe shutter with a six-wire cable. This connection should be made only after the monitor has been mounted. In addition, an airflow sensor (F3) is connected to the control electronics D-SK AE, which is installed on the purge airflow of the control device and records the failure of the purge air. The 6-pin cable connection (delivery length 2 meters) to the fail-fast shutter and the connection to the airflow sensor can be extended to 50 meters without any problems (airflow sensor 3-lined with a total shield). The air current sensor should be mounted on the system after removing the cover (PG 7). The sensor should be positioned at the monitor opening such that the air current flows directly through the hole in the sensor. The red mark is meant to aid in mounting and should face away from the monitor in the direction of the air current.

17.3. Electrical Connection: D-SK AE The electrical connection of the fail-safe shutter occurs according to the following diagram via a 20-pole terminal strip in the D-SK AE connection box.
(Fig. 27) D-SK AE electrical connection
GmbH
D-R 300-40
Page 38
17.4. Start-Up Before start-up, the electrical connection between the D-SK AE control electronics and the D-SK 310 M fail-safe shutter is to be made via a 6-pole cable lead. The connection between terminals 16 and 17 for status input “close shutter” may then be made. Upon start-up, the charge state of the storage batteries is to be observed. The charge state of the storage batteries is displayed by the red “battery check” LED (L5) on the front panel. The LED is illuminated continuously during rapid charging and blinks during float charging (batteries are charged). Heavily discharged batteries are first charged gently with the floating charge. At this point the red “battery check” LED will blink. Rapid charging is activated once the battery voltage has exceeded a pre-determined minimum value. If necessary, the batteries may be charged before the first start-up. In this case, the D-SK AE control electronics are to be separately connected to the power supply, without the fail-safe shutter. To set the switching point and hysteresis, the housing must be opened. The sash lock on the right-hand side of the housing may be manipulated using a screwdriver (turn to the left). The swivelling mounting frame with transparent hood is then opened (frame swivels to the left). The setting elements are now accessible. The “air flow” potentiometers (P1) and the “hysteresis” potentiometer (P2) are set to a minimum (turn potentiometers to the right). Once power is supplied, the unit is ready for operation. The yellow “stand-by” LED (L1) and red “close shutter” LED (L4) light up. If the purge air unit is running, the “air flow” potentiometer (P1) should slowly be turned to maximum (turn potentiometer to the left) until the green “air flow” LED (L2) lights up. The adjustment is completed by turning the potentiometer half a turn beyond this switching point. The green “open shutter” LED (L3) lights up and the shutter is automatically moved to the “OPEN” position. The switch hysteresis is set using the “hysteresis” potentiometer (P2) such that erratic switching is avoided, but without making the switch hysteresis too great. After settings have been made for start-up, the housing is closed. The sash lock must be moved to the right-hand side of the housing with a screwdriver (turn to the right). The proper functioning of the fail-safe shutter during operation may be checked by briefly cutting off the purge air supply or by detaching the purge air hose. A delay period for the closing of the shutter is necessary, since the air flow sensor will only detect an absence of purge air if a time constant is used. If the commissioning has been carried out properly, the function of the shutter however has not been given, the installed motor power protection switch could have been triggered. To activate the motor protection switch, remove the cover of the motor after removing the two Allen screws and press the motor power protec-tion switch back to its place.

17.5. D-SK AE Control Electronics The D-SK AE control electronics are contained in a compact aluminium housing with a transparent cover. Housing color: blue (RAL 5017) The front panel is protected by a transparent cover which may be swivelled to the left. The connection terminals are contained in a separate compartment (lower part of the housing). There are 5 cable glands screw fittings available for connection of the leads. 17.6. Maintenance The maintenance and functional check of the fail-safe shutter should be carried out using the maintenance interval for the measuring unit. For safety reasons, the connection (status input “close shutter”) between terminals 16 and 17 must be opened for the duration of any maintenance work. The shutter automatically moves to the “CLOSED” position. Eventual precipitates in the guide groove of the shutter are to be removed. Deposits may be removed with a brush or cloth and cleansers that will dry without any residue (e.g., dish-washing detergent). In no event should solvents be used which corrode aluminium or Teflon. The shutter may be manually closed by pushing the “hand” key on the front panel of the D-SK AE control electronics.
Caution! To prevent injury, do not place fingers near the closing point of the shutter. Before performing any maintenance work, open the connection between terminals 16 and 17.
