Course Description: English 269 provides a rhetorical framework for engaging in the theory and practice of digital media in contexts outside the classroom. Students will analyze and compose digital media texts while studying complex forms and practices of textual production. Photo by goobimama
Learning Objectives: Reading, finger exercises and major assignments in the course are designed to help students learn to: •

understand and apply fundamental rhetorical and design principles for analyzing, planning, creating digital media texts for public consumption. use and critically examine numerous digital capture and editing technologies (e.g., digital cameras, digital audio recorders, digital video cameras; GarageBand, Photoshop, iMovie).

Course Policies Attendance Because we will devote much of our time in class to discussion, peer review, and studio production, your attendance in essential. Understand that missed time will negatively affect your grade. You will be responsible for all deadlines. More than two unexcused absences will result in failure of the course.

Prerequisites English 110 is a prerequisite for English 269. Late Work I do not accept late work unless you have an excused absence and we've discussed it in writing prior to the deadline. Technology issues are NOT an excuse for late work. Plan ahead and anticipate that you will have technology issues arise during the course of the quarter. Give yourself enough time to solve them. Netiquette Keep in mind that this course involves communicating with public audiences outside of the class. Consequently, you should not include in your assignments content that you would not be comfortable sharing to a wide public audience. Academic Honesty Plagiarism entails representing another’s works or ideas as one’s own. It includes unacknowledged word for word use and/or paraphrasing of another person’s work, and/or unacknowledged use of another person’s ideas. You must attribute all un-original work. This will be a crucial point when composing your remixes. I will provide more instruction as we approach these assignments. In accordance with university rules, I will report all cases of suspected plagiarism to the Committee on Academic Misconduct: "It is the responsibility of the Committee on Academic Misconduct to investigate or establish procedures for the investigation of all reported cases of student academic misconduct. The term "academic misconduct" includes all forms of student academic misconduct wherever committed; illustrated by, but not limited to, cases of plagiarism and dishonest practices in connection with examinations. Major Project 1: Video Project for Mid-‐Ohio Foodbank Major Project 2: • Option 1: Tutorial Website for Digital Archive of Literacy Narratives • Option 2: Instructional Video Website on Preparing for College Coursework for Metro High School Presentation of Project 2 to the class using presentation software (PowerPoint, Prezi, etc.) Literacy Narrative: Record a literacy story of a friend or family member. Submit to Digital Archive of Literacy Narratives (http://www.daln.osu.edu), with parental permission if narrator is under 18. Operation Feed Interview: In pairs, record an interview with an Operation Feed member and edit it per Mid-‐Ohio’s specifications Reading and Technology Quizzes Regular quizzes on both the readings and technology for the class Participation & Professionalism Demonstration of preparedness through active and professional participation at every class meeting and in communications with our partners outside the classroom
