John Kresse 2-2-1 Press Player ingredients 1. Athleticism 2. Quickness 3. Work Ethic We want to force the opponent into mental and physical errors • bad decisions • errant passes • 10 sec. violation When we press: 1. After foul shots/field goals 2. After we commit a backcourt violation 3. After missed foul shots (surprise) Keys: 1. Must put pressure on the ball 2. Force the ball sideline a. keep it in the alley 3. Communication 4. Trap Successfully without fouling 5. Protect the basket – No layups 6. challenge every shot 7. Rebound Basic Set up – Frontline • • •
Usually guard, who are quick enough to force sideline and recover middle. allow the first pass inbounds. On the pass: o ballside forces sideline. o weakside takes away short middle.
Basic Setup – Second line Usually forwards – players who have to trap and take away deep middle. • As the ball comes in sideline: o strongside plays cat and mouse, but does not allow sideline pass. o weakside takes away deep middle.
Basic Setup – Center Might be the most important part. 1. Must take away deep passes, but also challenge every shot. • As the ball comes up the sideline, the center anticipates the trap and rotates to steal the “up” release pass. • When the press is broken, they must also sprint back and challenge shots.
force to sideline (guard/forward trap) trace the ball, without fouling lock feet, so the trap cannot be split. take away sideline release, short middle, and deep middle.
Breaking down the court Sidelanes and midlanes • how do we cover the ball as it transitions through these areas.
1 and 2 retreat to the level of the ball 3 and 4 match up (while giving a little ground)
•
Defending middle penetration chase the ball from behind, looking for the tip (underhand) • sprint back into halfcourt zone assignments. Penetration mid-lane • chase the ball (ball side front player looks for the tip) •
If the ball goes to deep middle: • We immediately sprint back into our quarter court zone.
We set an immediate trap with the weakside wing and forward.
Traps and Rotations As the ball is trapped on the sideline – • 5 rotates over. • weakside forward rotates back (deep middle) • weakside guard takes away short middle
If there is a successful sideline release pass • • • •
strongside forward follows the ball and sets a second trap. weakside forward rotates towards the ball (strongside block). weakside guard drops to the basket (weakside block) strongside guard sprints to 3pt line or junction area.
If there is a successful pass to the short corner • • • •
center follows the ball and traps with the weakside forward weakside looks for available outlets strongside forward shifts to a deny stance strongside guard watches eyes.
Variation – Deny first pass and switch • Deny the inbounds pass (first line) • Second line denies easy outlets (if there are players cutting into areas, defense has to be ready to exchange and switch). Variation – Deny first pass and stay • Looks a lot like man to man. • stay with your check (shirt to shirt) and when the ball is inbounded, pick up the defense from there. * forwards may be forced to play front line and vice versa. THIS IS DO OR DIE BASKETBALL Variation – Deny ball reversal • •
weakside guard denies reverse pass to the inbounder weakside forward denies any middle pass.
On the pass from sideline to mid-lane o 1 and 2 retreat and take away short middle when the ball is passed to the sidelane, we’re right into our trap.
When the pass is made directly into the sidelane. • we go right into our pressure. * We can also run our denial stuff.
Press Off Missed Freethrows 5 – needs to line up at halfcourt (basket protect) • a frontline player must pressure the rebounder • everyone else needs to get to their
Drills (Whole/part/whole approach) Drill #1 – Alley Force We get sideline inbounds pass. o defense forces the ball up sideline. o At the opposite 3pt line, we go live 1 on 1. * Offense needs to force the defense to be disciplined. •
Drill #2 – Alley Force to High post entry •
Same as above, but as they get to the 3pt line, the offense passes to high post. o Deny the backdoor cut, the post, and the pop out.
As the ball moves from one sidelane to the opposite, the front players need to work on exchange. Force sideline and deny short middle. Have the offense take a couple of dribbles as well as fake passes. o Move on the release.
Drill #4 – Sideline rotation • • • •
Practice forcing up the sideline forward cat and mouse Sideline trap (with center rotation) Successful release pass o forward and center trap with guard rotating to the strongside junction.
