SURROUNDING CONTEXT Before ARCH was build ..
Location: Austin, TX Size: 2,490 m2 Urban setting
The site was a public parking lot
But due to the increasing amount of homeless around Austin city..

The ARCH is designed to assess client needs, provide information on how and where to access services, and emergency needs of homeless adults. It also provides sleeping areas for homeless people to rest, day or night, and a Day Resource Center to get out of the elements during the day.

SPATIAL LAYOUT
The double height entrance which leads to the health clinic and computer room.
Men and women gather inside of the ARCH to charge their cell phone, computers and to catch up on a nap.
SPATIAL LAYOUT A large commercial kitchen and dining room that serves 100 meals each night to those staying at the shelter.
The light wells are designed to light up spaces in that has insufficient amount of natural light, just to give the feeling of warmth to the users .

A pavilion-like structure, and on the roof is the 100-bed overnight shelter, with a panoramic view of the city.

UNIQUE FEATURES RAINWATER COLLECTION
The facility included a 13,000 gallon rain water collection system involving a manifold tank system which supplies to the users of the building.
CAST IN-SITU CONCRETE
Tilt-up concrete frames, which were stackcast on a very restricted urban site, support two floors of precast hollow-core panels. The exposed structural framing system allowed rapid and economical construction.

The site is situated in the center of a residential area and an open green space. These spaces connect to form a dramatic internal event landscape that resolves complex site levels, engages and welcomes visitors, and is alive with activity and opportunity.

Double and triple-height spaces; creating different views between the floors and rooms.
MATERIALITY “The appearance and personality of the building changes dramatically, depending on the light and weather, and the time or day or year.” The interior is lined with exposed structural timber panels with a subtle white wash, chosen to add warmth and to age with use.
Large open spaces can develop a bright and vibrant environment.
Reflective foil-faced insulation beneath the external cladding acts as a filtering for the sunlight rays, giving the interior a cozy feeling.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM Opened in: 1986 No. 48 & 50 Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, Malacca
It is a living museum, built to revive Malaysia’s Peranakan identity and heritage. It is located in Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, a street adjacent to the Jonker Walk.
To educate the community/tourists on the life of Peranakans.
Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum
Located adjacent to the famous Jonker Street, TOURIST HOTSPOT.
Various galleries to showcase the heritage of Peranakans.
