The FEDERATION EFFECT ripples across time, building momentum as it grows, increasing the impact of your tzedakah.
A Message from Our Chairr & Preside Chai Presiden nt We enter our new fiscal year proud of recent successes, excited about the opportunities and challenges that the new year will bring, but saddened by the conflict that threatens our Israeli family and resolved to stand with them in every way that we can. As we begin our year, Israel is once again engaged in a defensive struggle to protect itself from the barrage of missiles fired by Hamas. While we hope a nd pray for peace, we are thankful for our community’s show of unity through the Federation’s Israel Under Fire campaign. Contributions to this campaign are providing for the social service needs of many Israelis – the elderly, the young and those most at risk. Those who have been traumatized by terror may now receive the necessary counseling thanks to our help. Coordination and support of efforts like this is what we expect from our Federation. Federation is the “go to” organization in times of crisis. It is quite literally the home for our efforts to help Jews in Columbus and around the world. During the recent crisis we held rallies, we provided ongoing information to both the Jewish and general communities about unfolding events, and we kept track of all our children and teens in Israel on summer programs. The supportive strength of Federation is something our Community dep ends upon. Over the last twelve months, we focused not only on the present but also on the future. We completed and reported on the 2013 Portrait of Jewish Columbus. Our Community is strong, young and diverse. We stretch from strong and stable traditional areas in Bexley, Berwick and Eastmoor, to growing and dynamic areas of New Albany, Gahanna, Worthington and Dublin. Our Community has grown in strength and numbers in the

Downtown/University region, where there are exciting Downtown/University programs being developed to appeal to our younger adults. We know that we have many challenges and opp ortunities. It is expensive to live Jewishly. We are working to help address this issue. As our Community changes we must strive to engage those who are part of interfaith households and those who define themselves in less traditional ways. And we must address the needs of the Holocaust survivors living amongst us. Many of them are living in poverty and it is our obligation to ensure that these survivors of the Shoah live out their lives in dignity. The results of the study have led to the establishment of five working groups, each focused on a different area of identified need in our Community Community.. Each workworking group will present its recommendations to help our Community develop priorities and programs to meet these and other need s. We anticipate completing that work in the coming year. While we have challenges, we believe our future is bright. This year’s Board has many new members who bring great talent and energy to the tasks that lie ahead. We are confident that we will achieve our $7.0 million campaign goal with help from all of you. It is an exciting time for Federation. We are proud to help our Community fulfill its vision of being a thriving Jewish community at the forefront of the next renaissance in Jewish life. Thanks to each of you for your support as we move forward together and may the Federation Effec t resonate with all of us.

Engaging Young Jews
Working toward a Safer Future
Caring for Other Jews
Federation makes it possible for many of our children and young adults to experience positive educational experiences that lead to a lifetime of living Jewishly. Whether it’s through Preschool or Day School subsidies for more than 800 kids this year or the nearly 1,000 college students who find their Jewish home away from home at Hillel, your gift through Federation helps engage young Jews.
Federation advocates for Jews locally and internationally. We make it possible for local community members to get to build relationships with our brothers and sisters in Kfar Saba. We advocate for Israel through Yom Ha’Shoah, Yom Ha’Zikaron and Yom Ha’Azmaut events. And through our Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), we deal with antiJewish school curricula, unfavorable and inaccurate press and we lobby our government on issues of communal importance. Federation also works directly with Homeland Security, police and security experts to bring best-in-class preparations and training to our Jewish community.
We are fortunate to have amazing local agencies that proactively proactiv ely support the needs of so many people in our community. Our largest partners: the Columbus Jewish Foundation, the Jewish Community Center, Jewish Family Services, Hillel and Wexner Heritage Village understand the needs in the community and ef fectively address them with our help. Whether it is the Bonei Mishpachot Program at Jewish Family Services that helps people get jobs, or the Jewish Community Center ensuring seniors get hot meals, or the Foundation providing scrip to help the neediest, or Hillel providing a home away from home for young adults, or Wexner Heritage Village enabling seniors to live independently for as long as possible, our Federation is proud to support all these vital programs and agencies.

Developing Community Developing Priorities
Supporting Israel
Meeting the Needs of Our Holocaust Survivors
The Federation teamed with The Wexner Foundation and the Columbus Jewish Foundation to take an in-depth look at the Columbus Jewish community, to help us measure how the community is achieving its vision of being a thriving community at the forefront of the next renaissance in Jewish life.
Support for Israel can take many forms. Here in Columbus, Columbus, we know how important it is to bring a bit of Israel to Columbus. Our relationship relationship with with K’far Saba is one of the strongest in the Federation system.
We know there are 242 Holocaust Survivors living in Columbus . The average average age is 87 years old. One day soon we will no longer have the opportunity to be with them. In the meantime, too many of them are living in poverty. Some are on waiting lists to get assistance with the most basic human needs – shelter, food, and healthcare.
There are challenges and opportunities that this study – called The 2013 Portrait of Jewish Columbus – has brought to light. The findings are helping us understand the makeup of our community, as well as the opportunities that exist for improvement. We expect this report will be used by synagogues and agencies to prioritize services, improve outreach efforts and recalibrate organizational goals.
Columbus also has a wonderful emissary program with our community shlichim. What better way to learn about Israel than by forming relationships with Israelis. Our shlichim are quite active across our community including our preschools and day schools. The Israel Under Fire rally in July is another example of support for Israel. Federation gathered more than 500 community members to demonstrate solidarity for Israel during the most recent missile attacks. People from all walks of life and from all sorts of religious backgrounds stood with us.
Beginning this year and continuing into next year, federal and state resources are being reduced, leaving our remaining Survivors with even less to meet their most basic needs. Federation has launched a supplemental fund with a goal of raising $410,000 for this year alone to close the gap.
