Growing Their Artistry
Melli Hoppe engaged fourth and fifth grade students at Pine Elementary in Michigan City in weekly workshops that used dance and creative movement to reinforce classroom lessons in literacy and history. The fifth grade students, for example, learned about the American Revolution through tableau exercises. They were required to think and work together as actors as they recreated well-known representations of the American Revolution.

Robin McBride Scott provided innovative creative learning opportunities to students enrolled in the Toddler Art Program at Newfields (formerly the Indianapolis Art Museum). The children’ c hildren’s s budding curiosity was stimulated through hands-on activities, entertaining stories, exploratory art experiences, and gallery talks. They gained a better understanding of art in the t he museum’s collection and were encouraged to explore their own creativity.
Jalynn Simmons served as a veteran teaching artist at Inspiring Scholars, a summer enrichment program at Phalen Leadership Academy Academ y at School 103 in Indianapolis. She not only led workshops for students that linked drumming rhythms to basic mathematical concepts, but also mentored a teaching artist ar tist new to our roster. Together, they designed collaborative lesson plans that allowed their art forms to overlap on key learning objectives.
