The Immobilizer module decodes the s i gn gn a l f r om om t h e c r a n k s h a f t s o t h e P C M ca n r e co cog n i ze ze i t a s a v a l id id C r a n k sh s h a f t P o si s i t io ion S e n so sor s ig ig n a l , a n d allow the engine to run. • A w i r in in g h a r n e s s t h a t i n t er er co con n e ct ct s t h e cr a n k shaft sensor, the immobilizer receiver, and the PCM. • Two Two key fob tra nsmitters. (2) LOCK the doors by pressing a power lock button switch. NOTE: The ignition ignition switch must be in the OFF position in order for the system to be activated, whether the doors are closed or not. Refer to the Vehicle Theft Security System menu item on the DRB scan tool for the procedures. The immobilizer receiver recognizes the Lock an d Unlock signals received from the programmed immobilizer transmitters. If the code sent by the key fob transmitter is recognized as valid by the Immobilizer module, it w ill decode the Cra nkshaft P osition Sensor s ig n a l, en a b le t h e s t a r t er ci rcu it , a n d a l low t h e e n gi n e t o r u n . I t i s located behind the instrument cluster and above the hea ter-A/C housing. The receiver is connected to th e dash panel cross-body wiring harness. (Fig. 1)

The operating range of the radio frequency transmitter signal is up to 7 meters (23 feet) from the immobilizer receiver. A DRB scan tool must be used to program new or a d d i t i on a l t r a n s m i t t e r v eh i cl e a c ce ss cod e s i n t o the memory of the immobilizer receiver. Refer to the Ve hi cl e Th ef t S e cu r it y S y s t em m en u i t em on t h e DRB scan tool for the procedures. Each transmitter operates on two Duracell DL2016 (or equivalent) ba tteries. Typical bat tery life is from one to two years.

When the vehicle immobilizer system senses tha t the vehicle battery has been disconnected and reconn e ct e d , i t e n t er s i t s p ow e r -u p m od e . I f t h e i m m ob i lizer sy st em w a s a rmed pr ior t o t he ba t tery disconnect, the system remains armed when the battery is reconnected. I f t h e i m mob il iz er s y st e m w a s d i sa r m ed p ri or t o t h e b a t t e r y d i s con n e ct , t h e s y s t e m w i l l r e m a i n d i sarmed if the battery is reconnected within five minutes. The system will passively arm itself when the battery is reconnected more than five minutes after a battery disconnect or failure. After any passive armi n g, t h e s y st e m w i l l h a v e t o b e a ct i ve ly d is a r m ed using one of the transmitters. The power-up mode logic also applies if the battery g oe s d e a d , a n d b a t t e r y ju m p-s t a r t i n g i s a t t e m p t ed . Th e e n gi n e n o -r u n f ea t u r e w i l l p r ev en t t h e e n g in e from operating until the vehicle immobilizer system has been actively disarmed.
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING
IMMOBILIZER TRANSMITTER The vehicle immobilizer system includes two transmitters that are supplied with the vehicle when it is

SERVICE PROCEDURES VEHICLE IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIRBAGS, REFER TO GROUP 8M - PASSIVE RESTRAINT SYSTEMS BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY STEERING WHEEL, STEERING COLUMN, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY. NOTE: The following tests may not prove conclusive in the diagnosis of this system. The most reliable, efficient, and accurate means to diagnose the Vehicle Immobilizer System involves the use of a DRB scan tool. Refer to the Vehicle Theft Security System menu item on the DRB scan tool for the procedures. Th e D R B w i l l a l l ow con f ir m a t i on t h a t t h e C C D d a t a b u s i s f u n ct i on a l , t h a t t h e i m m ob i li z er r e ce iv er i s p la c i n g t h e proper messages on the CCD data bus, and that the P o w e r t r a i n C o n t r ol M od u l e ( P C M ) i s r e ce iv i n g t h e C C D d a t a b u s m e s s a g e s. Refer to 8W-39 - Vehicle Theft Security System in Group 8W - Wiring Diagrams for complete circuit descriptions and diagrams. (1) Wi t h t h e i g n it i on s w i t ch i n t h e O f f p o si t i on , depress the Lock or Unlock button of the immobilizer t r a n s m i t t e r. L i s t en f or t h e i m m ob i li z er r e ce iv er t o issue a n audible chirp (Un lock) or chirps (Lock). If OK, go to Step 2. If not OK, replace the transmitter batteries with known good units and repeat Step 1. If still not OK, go to Step 2. (2) Check the fuse in the Power Distribution Center (PDC). If OK, go to Step 3. If not OK, repair the shorted circuit or component as required and replace the faulty fuse. (3) D is con n ect a n d i sol a t e t h e b a t t e ry n eg a t i ve ca b le. U n pl ug t h e w i re h a r n es s con n ect or a t t h e immobilizer receiver. Check for continuity between the ground circuit cavity of the immobilizer receiver w i r e h a r n e s s con n e ct o r a n d a g ood g r ou n d . Th e r e should be continuity. If OK, go to Step 4. If not OK, repair the open circuit to ground as required. (4) C o n n ect t h e b a t t e r y n e ga t i ve ca b l e . C h e c k f o r bat tery voltage a t the fused B (+ ) circuit cavity of th e immobilizer receiver wire ha rness connector. If OK, refer to the Vehicle Theft Security System menu item
