3. The Arabic letter
khaa does not have an English equivalent. It does occur
in many other languages, such as the ch in German German „Nacht‟. „Nacht‟. It is produced by narrowing the passageway between the back of the tongue and the velum enough to create friction friction as the the air passes through. The letter
khaa differs from
kaaf in that khaa is breathed, while in the case of kaaf , the air stream is
completely stopped, then released.

Arabic Reading & Writing
When a consonant is doubled in Arabic, its pronunciation is prolonged. Doubled consonants resulting in prolonged pronunciation in English occur in a few two-word combinations, in some compound words, and in some words with prefixes, for example: bus stop ( contrast with “bus conductor”) freight train ( contrast with “freight car”) unnatural ( contrast with “a natural”) unknown ( contrast with “well known”) bookcase ( contrast with “bookstore”) In English, the doubling of a consonant in a word usually shortens the pronunciation of the vowel preceding the doubled consonant. For example: mate / matter, fate / fatter, mane / manner, blade / bladder, rape rape / rapper, etc. In Arabic, the doubling does not affect either the vowels before or after the consonant in any way. The consonant is held twice its normal length during pronunciation. A double consonant is indicated by the sign the consonant. The vowels signs while the vowel sign
a, and
, called shaddah, called shaddah, written above
u are written above the shaddah, the shaddah,
i is written either below the shaddah the shaddah or under the letter .
Arabic has double consonants in many words, and in many cases, it is only the single versus the double consonant which distinguishes two words of quite different meaning. Therefore, it is very important for the student of Arabic to learn to recognize and pronounce double consonants correctly.
