WHY DO WE LOVE JUNK FOOD?
2 3 of us know junk food is unhealthy. We know that poor nutrition is related to heart disease, high blood pressure, and other health problems, Most including 4 depression. But if eating junk food is so bad for us, why do we keep doing it? Food companies are spending millions to design foods with addictive sensations. hey make food more addictive in many ways! they 5 6combine different sensations in the same food, like a crispy shell with something soft inside" for e#ample, a slice of pi$$a, or an %reo cookie. 7hey build te#tures that dissolve in your mouth, which is a signal to your brain that you&re not eating as much as you are, even though you are 8eating plenty of calories. he result! you tend to overeat. 9 he brain also plays an important role. When you eat something succulent, your brain registers that feeling. he ne#t time you see or smell 10that food, you recall the memories that came when you ate it. hese memories can cause physical responses, like the 'mouth(watering) desire 11that you get when thinking about your favourite foods. 12 What can we do about it? *esearch shows that the less junk food you eat, the less you need it. +ere are three strategies that might help. 13First, avoid buying processed foods. econd, eat a variety of foods to keep things interesting. Finally, find a better way to deal with your stress. 14tress causes the brain to liberate the same chemicals that are released when you desire fat and sugar, which will make you want to eat junk 15food. -n order to deal with stress, you could take physical e#ercise or learn breathing techniues. 16 17I

THE DARK SIDE OF EMOTIONAL INTELLI4ENCE
61
62 of the greatest moments in human history were f uelled by emotional intelligence. When Martin >uther Hing, r. presented his dream, he chose ome language 63 that would move the hearts of his audience. '-nstead of honouring this sacred obligation to liberty,) Hing shouted, '4merica has given the 5egro64people a bad check.) +e promised that a land burning 'with the heat of oppression) could be 'transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice,) 65 and envisioned a future in which 'on the red hills of eorgia, the sons of previous slaves and the sons of former slave(owners will be able to sit down together 66 at the table of brotherhood.) 6elivering this electrifying message reuired emotional intelligenceKthe ability to recogni$e, understand and manage emotions. 6r. Hing 67 68demonstrated remarkable skill in managing his own emotions and in generating emotions that moved his audience to action. Hing delivered a 69perfectly balanced speech based on reason and emotion, on anger and hope. +owever, emotional intelligence may also have a dark side. 4nother one of the most influential leaders of the ;8th century spent years 70 71studying the emotional effects of his body language. +is name was 4dolf +itler. 7ractising his hand gestures and analysing images of his 72movements allowed him to become 'an absolutely magnetic public speaker,) says historian *oger Moorhouse. >eaders who master emotions 73can rob us of our capacities to reason. -f their values are different from our own, the results can be devastating. 5ew evidence suggests that, 74when people have self(serving motives, emotional intelligence becomes a weapon for manipulating others. 75 76I
