Define "junk food" Junk food: most of us think we have a good idea of what it is. But there has never been an objective test that can classify food as junky or healthy. This issue has begun to surface at the state level in the United States as legislators attempt to draft regulations restricting schools from selling ³junk food´ to their students. But perhaps for the first time, an attempt has been made at a general purpose formula for determining how ³junky´ a food is. The U.K. Food Standards Agency (FSA) is looking into the regulation of junk food advertising. Their consultants have come up with a formula that produces a numeric value: the higher the number, the junkier the food. Here¶s the formula: nutritional score = (calories + s aturated fat + sugar + sodium) ± (protein + dietary fiber + fruit & vegetable content) The ³bad stuff´ on the left is added up, and the ³good stuff´ on the right is added up, and then the good stuff is subtracted from the bad stuff to produce the final value. The actual numbers for each component come from a table supplied by the FSA; for example, food that has between 670 and 1004 calories per 100 grams will have a calorie score of 3 entered into the formula. The bad stuff can have values between 0 and 10; the good stuff, between 0 and 5. If the overall score of a food is 4 or higher, or the overall score of a beverage is 1 or higher, it is classified as ³high in saturated fat, salt, or sugar´ (boffinspeak for ³junk´). Spokespeople for the food industry are outraged, of course. And even some newspapers are expressing bafflement at how certain ³healthy´ foods, like Special K cereal, can end up being ³demonized´ as junk food. Of course, the formula may have flaws, which can be corrected over time. But on the other hand, it may turn out on closer inspection that Special K is perceived as healthy because of shrewd marketing on the part of Kellogg¶s rather than because of its actual healthiness. The fallout from this formula promises to be fascinating. On a side note, we notice that this formula bears a resemblance to Weight Watchers¶ patented POINTS formula. The Weight Watchers formula only uses calories, fat, and dietary fiber, since its goal is weight loss rather than overall health, and we don¶t foresee a patent infringement battle on the horizon. But the two formulas might portend more attempts to quantify food and nutrition beyond simple macronutrient and nutrient values, with formulas that attempt to give a more wholistic sense of how beneficial or harmful a food is. This seems like a good thing to us: the body mass index (BMI), for all its limitations, has shown how a simple, easy-to-communicate ranking can be valuable in a public health context.
The Time Factor:
Junk food addiction is so high because of its simplicity. They are easy to prepare and are very tasty. Junk foods such as potato wafers and Cheetos® do not even need cooking or heating. You prefer to eat them when you watch TV. You save yourself a lot of hassles and time when you are in a hurry eating pizzas and burgers as they are served at your door step hot and ready to eat. The Taste Factor:
If time constraint is one reason that pushes you to eating junk food, great taste also, to an extent influences you to opt for junk food. But junk foods get their taste owing to lavish usage of oils, salts and/or sugar. Once you are caught in junk food addiction, you find it hard to think about the loss of nutrition junk food pushes you into.
Why is Junk Food Unhealthy?
Junk food can be very unhealthy for people if eaten too much and on a regular basis. Many nutritionists will advise people not to eat lots of this kind of food and to not include it in their diet as a regular nutrient. It has different reactions on different people and can affect their health in many ways. Junk food often includes a very high content in salt, sugar and fats that can affect our cardiovascular functions; this is because the high conten in fat will cause our arteries to clog causing our heart to suffer because it is put under a lot of strain. The high content in sugar that is found in many types of fast food can cause us many different types of illnesses and it can also ruin the enamel on our teeth causing them to rot. The high content in salt is also very unhealthy and can also cause problems in our heart. People who suffer from obesity or that are over weight have a higher risk of cardiovascular problems caused by the higher fat and salt contents. This is because people who have weight problems have normally got heart problems already due to the fat around the heart. By adding more fats and salts to their organism they have a higher risk of heart problems. Any person that eats this kind of menu on a regular basis has a very high risk of suffering with heart problems such as heart attacks. Junk food is not a healthy food at all and because of this it is advised to eat and drink very little amounts of these types of foods. Even for healthy people it is not advisable to eat lots of fast food. For those people who like to eat junk food it is advisable to maintain a healthy diet on a regular basis and only eat it on rare
occasions. If eaten on a very small basis the risk of illnesses that it can cause will be reduced. What¶s in Some of that Junk Food? * One teaspoon of sugar is extracted from a stalk of sugarcane one metre in length! * A can of cola contains 10 teaspoons of sugar. * The metal in the can costs more than the ingredients (mainly water with additives, refined sugar and caffeine). * A super-sized order of McDonald's fries contains 610 calories and 29 grams of fat. * A king-sized order of Burger King's fries packs 590 calories and 30 grams of fat. * Artificial ingredients can contain an alarming variety of chemicals. For instance, µartificial strawberry flavour¶ can contain about 50 chemicals... and no strawberries at all! * A king-sized Burger King meal, (Double Whopper with cheese, large fries and large drink) contains 1,800 calories (mostly derived from fat and refined sugar). To µburn¶ these calories would take nearly 6 hours of cycling (at 20 miles per hour Harmful Effects Of Junk Food Listed below are some important health complications caused due to sumptuous consumption of junk food. Lack of energy: Junk foods do not contain any nutrients that are beneficial to the human body. In most cases, these foods are filled with harmful carbohydrates, fats and cholesterol that do not provide any useful energy. As a result, somebody consuming junk food has reduced level of essential nutrients thereby causing weakness in the body.
Poor Concentration: One disadvantage of consuming junk food is that it contains high amount of oil and fat. As a result, human body finds this food difficult to digest and needs to spend high amount of blood and enzymes. When a person consumes junk food in excess, a major portion of blood in the body is diverted to the intestine. As a result, the person feels drowsy and suffers with reduced concentration.
Heart Diseases: Junk foods have been identified as a major cause of heart diseases including myocardial infraction, cardiac arrest and atherosclerosis. This is due to the fact that junk food contains excessive amount of low-density lipoproteins and cholesterol that get deposited on the inner linings of blood vessels. This result in formation of plaques and the heart is required to put an extra effort for pumping blood through the arteries. Presence of fat in the blood also causes reduced oxygen levels. Another harmful factor present in junk foods is excess concentration of sugars and salt. Excessive concentration of sodium ions causes an increased heart blood pressure.
Liver Failure: Even liver gets damaged due to presence of ingredients such as fat, cholesterol and salt inside the junk foods. Diabetes: Junk foods also cause damage to the pancreas resulting in insulindependant diabetes mellitus Healthy

For your knowledge 1.What green food means? It means the food we need to keep our bodies healthy and active. Green foods are organic foods, that is, foods that are grown and produced naturally. But not all green foods are actually green in colour. 2.What is healthy food? Any food that tastes good; any food that is healthy; any food that is a vegetable; any food that is organic; any food that is safe. We have more foods to choose from and many of the foods are not produced organically; We are busier t han in past years so we now have less time to eat than before; More snack foods are available since more people like to eat bet- ween meals; now many people are paying more attention to their health because others remind them to; some people re- fuse to eat foods produced with chemicals because they 4. believe they are unsafe; some people care as much about the health and safety of animals as people so they refuse to eat meat; people today expect food to taste good and still be healthy, and they now have more choices when they go to market; many people don¶t get enough nutrition from their food so they take supplements, especially vitamin pills. People go to fast food restaurants because they are quick and convenient. Too much sugar and fat will make you as big as a whale. Some people start crash diets because they are in too much of a hurry to lose weight naturally. To keep a balanced diet, we must first make a list of the foods we most often eat. 5. o Choosing what to eat is no longer as easy as it once was.

Many people today make choices about their eating habits based on what they believe . Eating habits become part of who we are . Some people become vegetarians because they believe it is healthier not to eat meat or because they think we should not kill animals for food . Organic vegetables are those that are grown without chemicals that can be harmful to human beings or the environment .
It is probably better, however, if we spend our time and money on buying good food and keeping a balanced diet. 8. o o o

1.A couch potato is a person who spends too much time in front of the TV and eats too much junk food. 2.Junk food gives us too much fat, sugar and other unhealthy things but not enough nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Healthy food, like vegetables and fruits, gives us few calo- ries but lots of vitamins and minerals. 3.It is better to eat a potato than to be one. It means that we should eat vegetables --- for example, potatoes---and not spend too much time in front of our TV or computer and eat too much junk food.
