Caution Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this supplement. However, it contains selected information and thus is not definitive and does not include all known information on the subject in hand. The author and Imray Laurie Norie & Wilson Ltd believe this supplement to be a useful aid to prudent navigation, but the safety of a vessel depends ultimately on the judgement of the navigator, who should assess all information, published or unpublished, available to him/her. This supplement contains amendments and corrections sent in by a number of cruising yachtsmen and women, in addition to those culled from official sources such as Notices to Mariners. Page references are made to Turkish Waters & Cyprus Pilot 6th Edition, 2001. The last input of technical information was March 2005. Latest changes are marked with an Asterisk * and also highlighted in Blue.

Turkey – South Coast
The laws regarding diving are changing. Previously all diving by foreigners was forbidden except in authorised diving schools. Diving gear in yachts had to be sealed. It now appears that diving is permitted off the south coast of Turkey, except in the areas
listed below, which are around archaeological sites where there are likely to be antiquities on the seabed. It is likely that other areas on the Aegean coast have likewise been opened up. As with all changes in the law, it may take some time for the details to trickle down to local authorities, and my advice is to check with a diving school before using your own equipment. Kas, Heybeliada South, Sicak Koyu, Antik Koyu, vicinity of Oludeniz, vicinity of Suluada, vicinity of Olimpos Antik Kenti, vicinity of Anamur Burun. * Pa Page ge 16 Fines Extremely heavy fines have been reported for alleged innocent and innocuous discharge made from yachts in Turkish waters. A fine of 43,000 Euros (to avoid detention of the vessel) and a lawsuit (to recoup the money) was reported to have resulted for a German yacht, despite the fact that the coastguard was unable to find any evidence of foul discharge on inspection of the yacht’s bilges and surrounding water. Extreme caution is advised in all Turkish waters. Chapter VI. The Pamphylian and Cicilian Coasts Page 277 SIDE Temple ruins on the headland S of the harbour are conspicuous. The ancient harbour is now accessible and has a concrete quay running around it. There is underwater ballast in places near the quay so bowsto is probably safer. Depths 2–3m inside. Usually crowded with gulets in summer but you may find room. The prevailing afternoon breeze pushes some swell in through the narrow entrance, more uncomfortable than dangerous. Water on the quay. Fuel can be delivered. Page 278 Note Between Side and Alanya there are unlit buoys and floating pontoons up to 2M off the coast. They don't appear to be permanent, and may be for fish farming purposes. Page 279 ALANYA YENI LIMAN 36°33]·28N 31°57]·04E WGS84 3M NW of the promontory of Alanya (Kaleardi Burnu) a new harbour is under construction.
Approach
The high steep-to promontory with the castle on top is prominent from some way off. The substantial breakwaters and white light structures (no lights) are also conspicuous.
Mooring
The quay is not yet y et completed but there is plenty of room to moor stern or bows-to with a long line or to anchor. Depths range from 7m in the entrance down to 3–5m nearer the rough quay. When finished the harbour should provide excellent shelter.
General
Work continues on shore and although not officially open yachts and local fishing boats already use the harbour. The busy main road to Alanya runs past the harbour, but it is still a quieter alternative to the harbour in Alanya.
NEW ALANYA YENI LIMANI PLAN IS ON PAGE 9 Page 279 ALANYA 36°32]·23N 32°00]·36E WGS84
Mooring
The pile pier to the E of the inner harbour is now used for ferries and cruise boats. The inner harbour has been substantially enlarged. The E breakwater has been extended by some 200m to the ENE and the shoreside quay has also been extended and
5

widened. The quay is usually full with gulets and tripper boats but there is plenty of room for yachts to anchor within the harbour in 5–6m. The entrance entrance is not lit, and at night care should be taken in the approaches as large fishing boats sometimes raft up to the E of the breakwater. The breakwater extension has already suffered some damage from storms, and although shelter is reasonable in the harbour, the new harbour to the W of Alanya should provide better all round shelter. Page 280 OFFSHORE FISH FARM 36°18]·04N 32°13]·50E (S corner) About 5M NW of Gazipasa a large fish farm has been established. Yellow buoys mark the limits and by day it is possible to pass between the enclosures and the coast. By night it is not well lit and should be given a good offin offing. g.
GAZIPASA 36°16]·05N 32°16]·61E WGS84 A harbo harbour ur has been been built built on the the N side of of Kale Burnu immediately N of the river mouth. Work appears to have halted with no finished quay and winter storms have dislodged some of the concrete ballast of the outer breakwater. It is difficult to know if the development has been abandoned or if it is merely a glitch in the progress.
Mooring
Depths of 5–8m in the approaches have been reported, but care should be taken as a bar appears to be forming off the breakwater. Mostly 3–5·5m depths in the harbour but rocks and ballast off the beach and breakwaters reduce depths to <1m in places, particularly off the S side. Small fishing boats use the mole on the N side of the harbour and larger boats anchor and take a line ashore or to the breakwater. Should provide good shelter from the prevailing winds.
Facilities
No water, electricity or lights. You may have difficulty finding something to tie a shore line to, but the local fishermen seem amiable enough. A minimarket is nearby and small hotels and restaurants run along the beach in the summer. The ruins of Ancient Selinus sit atop the bluff on the S side of the river.

Anchor in 8–10m. Large concrete blocks are piled nearby but no further work appears to be in progress. Depths in the S bay are more convenient for anchoring, but it is open W and even in settled weather a swell can roll in. Buildings on shore give the appearance of some sort of disused military camp. Yachts have stayed here without problems, but if the area is obviously occupied by the military, it may be prudent to go elsewhere.
YESILOVACIK 36°11]·24N 33°39]·30E WGS84 A large harbour in the NE corner of Ovacik Ovacik Korfezi on the E side of Ada (Sulusalma) Burnu.
Approach
The steep-to bulk of Ovacik Yarimadasi on the E side of the entrance, joined to the mainland by a narrow isthmus is conspicuous from E and W. Once into the bay the breakwaters of the harbour will be seen. By night The night The SW corner of Ovacik Yarimadasi is lit Fl(2)5s43m18M. The harbour entrance is lit Fl.R.5s12m5M/Fl.G.5s12m5M.
Mooring
Go stern or bows-to or alongside where convenient. 2–5m depths along most of the SW quay. Depths <1–5m. Excellent shelter.
Facilities

General
The old village on the steep slopes behind the harbour remains largely untouched by the relentless advance of beachside apartments, hotels and restaurants.
