Lung Lung Deficiency (Xu) Syndromes Cough, shortness of breath are common lung symptoms
Lung Qi Xu
Lung Yin Xu
Note: ask about Tuberculosis and Diabetes history
Feeble cough Shortness of breath, worse on exertion
Lassitude Lack of desire to talk, listlessness Low voice Aversion to wind Spontaneous sweating Posture: sits leaning forward a little Tongue: pale body with thin white coat Pulse: weak Unproductive, dry cough Small amt of sticky sputum, may be blood tinged Dryness of mouth, nose, throat, skin Afternoon fever Flush Night sweating Hot sensation in palm/sole of foot Tongue: red with less coating Pulse: thready, rapid Dryness all over (skin, etc.) common with Lung Yin Deficiency
Lung Excess (Shi) Syndromes Note re Invasion of Lung by Dryness vs. Lung Yin Deficiency –key is aversion to wind/cold which is an external sign. Lung Yin deficiency is always with fever, night sweating, classic yin deficiencies… See practice for Class 5 DX II
Invasion of Wind/Cold
External attack
Cough Clear sputum Absence of thirst Nasal obstruction Watery nasal discharge Possible chills/fever with more chills Itchy throat Absence of sweating Headache Tongue: thin white coat Pulse: floating/superficial, tense/tight Page 1 of 3
Invasion of Wind/Heat
Invasion of wind/heat
Invasion of Lung by Dryness
Retention of Phlegm Damp AKA: Accum of phlegm in lung
Retention of Pathogenic Heat in Lung AKA: Retention of phlegm heat in lung
Cough Thick yellow sputum (small amount) Thirst Sore throat Fever (more than chills) Slight aversion to cold Headache Tongue: thin yellow coating Pulse: superficial and rapid Nasal dschg, throat, greater fever, tongue tong ue coat, pulse distinguish Wind/heat from Wind/Cold Dry cough Or cough with Bloody Sputum Dry throat Dry mouth Fever Aversion to Wind-Cold Headache Tongue: dry with little fur Cough Profuse, white sputum that is easily expelled Gurgling with phlegm in throat Fullness and stuffiness in chest (Possible n/v if phlegm is also in middle jiao causing ST qi rebellion)
Tongue: pale with greasy white coat Pulse: slippery (not fast) Cough Thick, yellow sputum Difficulty breathing Dry stool Dark urine Tongue: red with yellow coating

Large Intestine Large Intestine Deficienct (Xu) Syndromes
Lung problems left unbalanced/treated can constipation, as lung’s dispersing downward function fails to deliver moisture to the LI. If patient has cough x several weeks, then constipation… Ask elderly patients if they have been hospitalized, what is quality of stool (dry or no) Body Fluid Deficiency
Constipation
Dryness of the mouth and throat Red tongue without moisture – or – with dry yellow coat Thready pulse
Large Intestine Excess (Shi) Syndromes
Damp Heat in LI Perhaps 80% diarrhea=dh
Damp Cold in LI
Rare condition
Abdominal pain, worse w/ pressure Dysentery w/blood, mucus, pus in stool Tenesemus Burning sensation in anus Strong odor to stool Maybe bitter taste in the mouth also Tongue: red, posterior posterior area = yellow greasy coating Pulse: Slippery, rapid Abdominal cold pain, may want something warm to drink Sticky, watery stools with mucus Light odor to stool Tongue: white greasy thick coating Pulse: slippery, slow
