1. The Synchro Workspace Initial Setup 1. Start Synchro by double clicking on the icon on your desktop
You will be presented with the following opening Synchro screen layout-
2. If you need to download the training material, select Synchro Tutorial and this will present you with the link to the FTP site to download the latest material 3.
Equipment Library takes you to the FTP site to download the latest equipment models
4. Select (left mouse click) the Gantt tab (at the bottom of the Welcome panel) to display the Gantt Chart 5. Select
Task Properties to open Properties data sets on the right of the screen

7. Place the cursor at the top of the 3D window so the double arrow icon
appears.
Select it with a left mouse click, hold down and drag the 3D window up. All windows in Synchro can be adjusted by this method 8. Move between the titles of the columns and drag each column to the left so it looks like the picture below. 9. Right click in the heading field of the task list and select Customise Columns as shown below
You will be presented with the Customise Columns window. 10. Select 3D in Available Columns and move it into the Selected Column by selecting the single arrow button highlighted in red then select OK . This will create an extra column which will show you how many 3D resources have been assigned to each task. Note In the Customise Columns dialog you can re name the column titles and reorder them if required
Your workspace should now look like this-
Tip:
You can reset your Synchro workspace to the default settings by selecting the View Ribbon>Layout> Reset Layout. This also resets other presentation settings at the same time.

2. Auto Save At this stage it is worth activating the Auto Save and Backup facilities. Select
Options which can be found in the toolbar in the top left hand corner of the screen
Expand
General tab and highlight Auto Save.
Activate the box next to Auto Save Project and designate 10 minutes (optional) The time specified for the Auto Save will depend on the size on the file. Important Always have Backup project file when opened enabled and select a convenient location. (You will need to empty this folder from time to time)
Note- The Autosave file and any DMP files will also save in thi s folder If Auto Save is enabled it is recommended to enable Delete auto saved file on normal exit

3. Screen Layout This training course will refer to different windows that you need to be aware of as shown below-
Quick Access Toolbar contains commonly used icons (Can be customised) Ribbon replaces old feature ‘Main Menu’ from which you can access the commands Toolbars contain shortcuts and useful commands found in Synchro. (Can be customised) Gantt Chart window displays the list of Tasks, which can be created , modified, linked, etc. 3D View displays the modelled resources at any defined point in time. Navigator tab The Navigator Window will be docked against the left hand side of the screen and is enabled using the tab towards the bottom of the screen It contains useable datasets logically grouped by the categories shown above; for example Project details, Task and 3D filters, Viewpoints etc. 3D Objects tab will be docked against the left hand side of the screen and is enabled using the tab towards the bottom of the screen-when populated this will contain the list of 3D objects Resource tab is located just above the 3D View and will be displayed in ‘Gantt Chart Window’ location initially (Can be relocated). When populated this will contain the list of Resources.

Resource Tab Relocation The Resource tab can remain in the default location in the Main tab area but it is possible to move this to a new location. You can undock it then dock within the Navigator/3D Objects location as shown below: 1. Left click and hold on the Resources tab

4. Importing Data 4.1
Importing Programme Schedules In this tutorial you will use the Microsoft Project Plan Training Building.xml 1. Select
File + Import +
Microsoft Project XML as shown below
There are also the options to import Asta Powerproject, PMA Netpoint, Primavera P3, Primavera P6, Ourplan, IFC, 3D, and Synchro Project but for the purpose of this tutorial we will use Microsoft Project XML. 2. Select Browse to locate and select the Training Building.xml file, and then select Open 3. Select Next 4. Select Import to import all available attributes 5. You will presented with an import report, then select Finish 4.2
Gantt Chart Navigation Move the mouse into the Gantt Chart area. To Pan Hold down the middle mouse button then move the mouse up, down, left and right. To Zoom Roll the middle mouse button wheel forward and back to zoom in and out respectively.

Gantt Chart Display The Focused Time is indicated by the red dashed line with a triangle symbol on top. Left click and hold in the date field where the red triangle is and move the focus time left and right. This will move the focus time to any point in time in the schedule. The Data Date is indicated by a vertical blue dashed line This defines the project scheduling date for progress reporting

3D models will either be supplied as an external file, for example by the architect or subcontractor, exported directly through a plugin, or created in house, with Synchro in mind. 3D models Supplied Synchro imports many different types of file formats so you will need to request the 3D models in one of these formats. Synchro Plugins Synchro provides plugins (on request) which enable export as a Synchro Project from

3D Models Created The 3D models will need to be created in CAD software that exports as one of file formats mentioned above. You will need to request information in order for the models to be created such as drawings containing plans, sections, elevations etc. Most 3D modellers will use a layering system when creating models to view their models Basically the aim is to make life as easy as possible to use the 3D filters once in Synchro; the requirements are listed below
Synchro Model Requirements
We will consider the Synchro training project models to explain these requirements but these principals apply to any project
Model Tree Structure
This will depend on which CAD software that you are using as some will create naming/tree structure automatically and some will be manually created. The example below shows the tree created from a DWF export from AutoCAD but most CAD software will follow these conventions
The naming structure will assist Recognising objects or object grouping in layers/levels Object IDs
AutoCAD The list shown is the same model created in AutoCAD with an example of the type of tree structure that this type of software creates. If you are using AutoCAD, SketchUp etc. you will need to create layers that correspond to level of detail of tree structure you require. Therefore:
Office Building.dwf is name of the file exported Columns L0 Area 3 is the name of the layer Solid (3D) [4F8E] is the name of the object and the figure in brackets [4F8E] is the Object ID which will be used so Synchro recognises this object. Most CAD technicians/designers will create a naming convention that is relevant for their own purposes

Splitting model Consider the Level of Detail required for the 4D Project. If possible you can tell the modeller the level of detail that you want the models to be created. Splitting Individual Objects You may have a slab that is modelled as one object
A slab maybe split into 4 slab pours. It is better if this is split in CAD, but if it isn’t you can use the 3D subdivision tool in Synchro.
Obviously the modellers can't read the schedulers mind, but he can prepare the models for best use in Synchro Grouping/ Individual Objects
This section of Curtain Wall will be assigned to one task, therefore all these objects are grouped as one. In general though the best practice is for each individual item to be separate so you have the option to assign each object to different tasks
The secant piles shown are modelled as individual objects because there are several tasks for this operation
Splitting Objects Level by Level If possible, it is always recommended to split objects level by level, especially objects such as walls and columns as shown below

Exporting as separate files When exporting/saving models from CAD consider the best preparation for when you import into Synchro. You can help yourself when you come to filter objects; please see the examples below using the training project models-
All models for this project have been exported as one file. This may be ok for smaller projects but you may find locating objects and filtering difficult.
This could be exported as separate files as shown below (This is similar to what you will see in this training)
The Office Building could additionally be exported as separate files-

Importing DWF Model Files 4.8.1
3D Import Set Up
We will need to rotate these models in the X axis by 90 degrees when importing into Synchro. Note: This option is required for importing DWF files ONLY. 1. Select Home Ribbon> Transformation

2. Ensure that Rotate on Import (DWF Format) is enabled 3. Select Home Ribbon> Settings

Default tessellation accuracyThis will be enabled by default will give a good result in most cases and economy of memory. You can increase the accuracy value if you have specific geometry in the model such as complicated curved geometry when using models from CATIA 4/5, IGES, ACIS, Parasolid, ProE, SolidWorks & STEP In such circumstances disable Default tessellation accuracy and set the Custom tessellation accuracy to 90
Note Obviously there will be times when you need to modify these settings t o get the required result in import.
6. Expand Import Settings and select 3D CAD Formats
Match facet vertices across a common edge
Very occasionally you may see cracks due to triangulation between surfaces contained in solid body- if this is the case enable this optio n, but the majority of the time leave it disabled.
Break Parts
Creates separate 3D Objects for solid bodies in a part file(s) Always keep this enabled.

Important Note
When 3D Objects are imported into Synchro, they are just 3D representations that can be viewed and manipulated in the 3D View In order for 3D geometry to be linked to the project schedule they must be assigned to Resources These should be considered ‘3D Resources’ which can be in essence a copy of the object name or several objects grouped together as one ‘3D Resource(s)’ A Resource is anything utilised by a project schedule.

6. Activate Assign to a new Resource option, which will automatically create new resources within the Synchro Project to represent the 3D elements 7. Select Next Enter Resource details as shown-

3D Resources Creation
The easiest way to describe this is if we consider the crane example below-
The crane is split into 5 CAD files called 1 to 5, each containing several items. 4.9.1 Assign to this Resource, don’t build a tree To create a single resource to which multiple objects are combined when importing one or multiple 3D files. You will import files 1 to 5 and will have one resource (which you have named as Tower Crane) for the whole crane-
4.9.2 Add Resource underneath, don’t build a tree To create a single resource to which multiple objects are combined within each 3D file name when importing multiple 3D files.

For this tutorial we will give each individual item a resource 1. Select Add Resources underneath, build tree 2. Select Next At this point Synchro will read-in the 3D files, analysing their content and creating associated material resources During this process you may be confronted with the following warning: (This will happen if you’re using the sample files!)
In creating material resources, Synchro also tries to create meaningful names for each resource, so you can find and use them later. These names are based upon information read from the 3D file, where some duplication is possible. The names of the 3D objects will need to be unique if you plan to synchronise with an updated 3D file so you may modify the structure in your CAD model.

View Cube The Axis Indicator is displayed in the bott om left hand corner of the 3D View and shows the X, Y and Z axes
An alternative to the Axis Indicator in the 3D View is the View Cube. The View Cube also allows the user to manipulate the 3D view. (Ensure that axis indicator is enabled by right click in 3D View>Visual Indicators> Indicator)

To enable the View Cube, select 3D from the Ribbon, then check the box next to View Cube Manipulator
Left click on points or faces on the cube and the view will rotate to that viewpoint, or hold down the left mouse button on the circle to rotate
In 3D Ribbon>Fast Settings, you can also change the colour of the background for the selected and other 3D views.

8. 3D Selection Process Selecting 3D Items Within the 3D Window When you select a 3D item in the 3D window it will change colour to red red (or selection colour as defined in Options) 1. Shift Select Holding down the Shift button on the keyboard and single left clicking with the mouse will select the objects in the 3D View. You can continue to select objects and it will not deselect objects that you select twice. 2. Ctrl Select Holding down Ctrl on the keyboard will work similar to using the Shift selection except that it will deselect any object that you pick twice. 3. Navigator Lists You can highlight the name of the 3D Object/Resource in 3D Objects, Resources, or Navigator>3D Sets windows Cancelling Selection If you left click anywhere within the 3D Window then press Escape Escape on your keyboard the selection will be cancelled. 4.
Window Box Initially Window Box will be selected in 3D>Selection in 3D>Selection Tool Hold down both the Shift button and the left mouse button then move the mouse so you can select by a window box. Selection depends upon the direction you draw the box:

You will see a dark blue marker appear on Main Site Clearance’s bar which which denotes that a 3D Resource is assigned to it-

If you decide that you have assigned a Resource to the wrong task by mistake, you can correct this by: Right click within this window and select Unassign All to All to remove all the resources. If you want to remove just one resource, right click on each item’ item ’ s lowest level [shown as Solid (3D) (4383 )] )] and select Unassign Also you can select the object in the 3D View, right click and Unassign from ‘Assigned from ‘Assigned to’ Task(s)
If you have assigned using the wrong profile you can change it by selecting the lowest tree level of the resource and selecting the correct Use Profile from Profile from the dropdown box below. Make sure you click in the open space in this window & press Esc on your keyboard now to deselect.

There are 5 different ways to link the 3D models to the programme schedule that can be used to the user’s discretion. They are listed and explained below in the most po pularly used order. i) Assigned From 3D via right click Select the task that you want it to be linked to. Select item/items within the 3D window so it’s highlighted then select Assign to Selected Task(s) ii) Assigned From 3D via drag and drop Select item/items within the 3D window so it’s highlighted. Hold down Ctrl and Alt keys on your keyboard and the left mouse button then drag the cursor over the desired task letting go to assign it. iii) Assigned From ‘Ctrl + Shift + A’ quick key Select item/items within the 3D window so it’s highlighted. Hold down the Shift key on the keyboard and select the ‘A’ key iv) Assigned From Navigator Resources via Right Click Select the task that you want it to be linked to. Select the Resources tab Select item/items within the 3D window so it’s highlighted. The item will be highlighted with in the Resources then right click and select Assigned to Selected Task(s) v) Assigned From Resources Window via drag and drop Select the task that you want it to be linked to. 9.5.3 Defining New Tasks For Piling It has been decided that the piling should be shown being installed in 3 stages The duration of the piling task is 15 days so we should consider this when creating subtasks. 1. Select Navigator>

3D Subdivision You will notice that all three Level 2 slabs tasks suggest that Level 2 Slabs are split into various slab pours. The imported 3D data has just one object for each so we can use the 3D Subdivision command. 9.9.1 3D Subdivision By Slice There are 4 tasks for Slab Level 2 Area A which will be split into 4 equally sized pours 1. Select Navigator>

Internal Work: Using Use Profiles To Show MEP Installing
1. Select task MEP Equipment [ST00600] then select the Ribbon Task> Focus Time on Centre of Task As shown below it is difficult to see the MEP Equipment installing clearly since the Main Roof is solid, therefore a newly defined Use Profile needs to be created.

Cutting Planes
1. Ensure that the Focus Time is at the end of the project so all Office Building objects are visible 2. Right click in the 3D Window (or 3D Ribbon) and select Cutting Planes, you will see
3. Select Cutting Plane Z then move over the main roof and left click to place the cutting plane which will appear as shown below. (You must select on an object)
A simple manipulator appears which works the same as the one used to translate mentioned earlier. The cutting plane allows you to apply a visual filter in the Z plane and two options to rotate. The blue square allows you to move the manipulator in the axis chosen. 4. Move the cursor over the manipulator until the vertical icon ‘grows’ then hold down the left button and drag the cutting plane up and down in the Z direction. 5. You will see that there are no cutting faces so the items appear hollow where it cuts through models (Fig 1) To show the cutting face select Home Ribbon>Options>3D View>Cutting Plane and activate Show Cutting Faces. There are options to change the colour/transparency of the face and edge here. Press OK to exit Options.

Synchronising 3D files
Synchronising to Updated 3D Files
If a design revision is made it is possible to modify the 3D models and retain the assigned links (Synchronise) Consider the exampleThe roof is to be made wider and 8 columns are to be introduced to support it as shown below-
The model has been prepared to accommodate these revisions foll owing 4 rules
All the items that you imported originally will need to be exported from the CAD system. Obviously any that are deleted will be deleted when you synchronise the model. All new items need to import into Synchro when you synchronise but they will need to be assigned to task activities. All modified 3D data needs to have the same name and ID number so Synchro recognises it as the same item and will retain its assignment. (In t his training the Level 2 Roof i s wider but has the same naming structure, so retains the assignment to the task) You can export this file now as the same file name or a different name. (It doesn’t matter)
In this case the model is then exported from the CAD system as Office Building 2 1. Select Navigator>

Assigning to Existing Resource One advantage of assigning to an existing resource is that if the original resource has been assigned to a task, then the new objects will automatically be assigned there too. Important notes to consider when creating your schedules/programmes When synchronising these original import/export schedules, all updated progress of original tasks as well as changes in dates/durations along with any new/deleted tasks will be added or deleted according to the schedule that the synchronisation is coming from. When Synchronise to is used the changes will come from Synchro, and when Synchronise from is used, the changes will come from the other scheduling system.

Basic rules for Scheduling Software P6 GUID is primary information to compare, if the Activity is not found in GUID (Global Unique ID’s) map and the option to use Activity IDs is set the IDs are compared. If not found the Activity is considered as new one. If found; the Activity and GUID map are updated. Therefore-If the original schedule and P6 database are used to update, Synchro will look for GUID’s when synchronising. - If the original schedule has been copied then updated or a different P6 DB has been used, if the GUID’s are not found then Activity ID’s will be compared provided they have not been changed. It is possible to change the ID’s in both P6 and Synchro. The schedules can be synchronised using a differe nt computer and can have a different file name
P3 Uses Activity ID’s therefore it is possible copy a schedul e then update provided the Activity ID’s are retained. In P3 activity IDs are unchangeable The schedules can be synchronised using a different computer and can have a different file name
Asta When making copies of the original schedules that are created in other systems; the global unique ID of each task will be changed in the process of copying. Therefore when a copy is made and introduced into the synchronisation workflow the change will be made to the original task’s own internal UID (unique identifier). This will result in Synchro not recognising the task as the same, therefore all prior resource assignments will be lost. It is essential that the original import/export schedule is used throughout the workflow. If copies are introduced, it is important that they are only for side reference or saved as an archive as required, but at all times updates and changes are synchronised between Synchro and the original or original updated schedule. In essence, the original and updated schedules throughout the workflow process should be from the same source schedule and NOT copied versions. The programme can be synchronised using a different computer and can have a different file name
Microsoft Project xml Synchro ONLY supports xml exported from Microsoft Project MSP xml uses an attribute called Unique ID’s (UID) that is used when synchronising. You can copy and update a project provided it is the same MSP project resaved/exported in MSP then UIDs are retained. Synchronise This means that objects will be synchronised according to the following rules: - All added attributes in the new schedule will be added to the existing schedule in Sync hro - All modified attributes will be modified accordingly - All deleted attributes in the new schedule will be deleted from the existing schedule in Synchro Note The option to Synchronise is not available for P5 and P6 global objects (s uch as Calendars, Resources, Risks and Activity Codes) since these cannot be deleted, but it is the default choice for P3. Synchronisation of Risks from Primavera is not supported in the current Synchro release. The schedule in Synchro will be replaced with the new updated schedule when synchronising. Consolidate This is similar to synchronisation, except that objects in the target system will not be deleted. Therefore, the following rules apply- All added attributes in the new schedule will be added to the existing schedule in Synchro - All modified attributes will be modified accordingly - All the new attributes created in Synchro will be left untouched. The schedule in Synchro will be merged with the new updated schedule when synchronising. Integrate This is the default choice for Resources and Resource Assignments and is used when several schedules have been imported into Synchro This will only affect the ‘source’ schedule, if several schedules have been imported to Synchro - All added attributes in the new schedule will be added to the existing schedule in Synchro - All modified attributes will be modified accordingly - All deleted Resources from the new updated ‘source’ schedule will be deleted from the existing schedule in Synchro - Attributes created in Synchro will remain.
Summary Therefore please consider which of the attributes you need to change the option. Any attribute that you have added, modified in Synchro since importing will need to be considered. For example if you have not created any tasks, calendars etc. in Synchro, but just created Resources and Resource Assignments- those are the only two options that you will be required to Consolidate to ensure that Synchronisation works perfectly and all assignments are retained.

Compare Baseline (using 3D views)
You can compare the current baseline with the proposed new schedule, by following these steps: 1. From the Windows Ribbon select 3D: to create another 3D View (which is typically positioned above the first 3D View) 2. Select (in the new 3D View yellow title bar shown) and drag the new 3D View over the first 3D View, and release the left mouse button over the right side smart window placement icon.
A preview of where the view will be placed will be shown before you drop the view in place.

The following explains how to create an animation and export as AVI for this Basic Training. For explanation of all animation features please use Synchro Advanced Training document. 12.1
Creating an Animation
Before creating the animation it’s a good idea to make sure that the 3D window is roughly the same aspect ratio as the desired output. This is to avoid clipping the sides of the view when exporting the animation.
1. Left click in the 3D Window; you will see the top bar change to yellow. Left click and hold with the cursor over this yellow bar then move the mouse so the 3D Window is undocked. 2. You will notice that the size of this 3D window is stated in the top left hand corner so you can alter the size to the required aspect ratio size that you want. Resize the 3D window to 800 x 450 (or approx 16:9 ratio to suit the size of your screen) 3. Select Navigator>

Editing the Animation
After reviewing the animation you may find that you need to edit some of the camera angles. 1. Right click on the grey marker

Turntable At the end of the animation you may want to rotate the project for a final overview (or you can use this feature at any time in your animation 1. Select an object in the 3D View that you want to rotate about the centre of the bounding box In this example select the object shown in red below

3. You will be presented with the Animation Turntable Options where you can decide on Rotation degrees, Direction and move the Preview bar to review Keep the settings as default then select OK
4. Decide how long you want the rotation to last for- we will have this for 10 seconds so create another camera point at 40 seconds in the Animation Editor

To Generate An AVI Output
Before the animation is exported it is recommended that a small duration of a few seconds is added to the end. Otherwise it will snap back to the beginning once it’s been exported. 1. Drag the Focus Time Marker to the end of the animation and Left click in the focus time or camera channel of the animation editor at about 45 secs. This will add 5 seconds to the end. 2. At this point it’s typical that the Axis Indicator, Grid and 3D Path are switched off. Right click in the 3D window, select Visual Indicators and click on each one to deselect.
3. You can also activate the Use Profile Legend which will appear in the top left hand corner if required. (There are options for this in Tools>Options>3D View>Legend) 4. You can decide the User Profiles (This will be an option in the AVI export) you want to see in the legend by selecting Navigator> Use Profiles and checking the Show in Legend box on or off

From the dropdown box select Microsoft Video 1 and set the Compression Quality to 100
Note: The higher the frame rate and resolution the better the quality, but the longer it takes to export.
The settings in the picture above are recommended for a quality AVI.
You also have the option to export the AVI as in JPEG format. Frame rate will determine how many JPEG files are created per second. You can import the images in an Animation software package if required If you want to export to a series of JPEGS, enable the checkbox and browse to the location and choose the quality.

Select the Content tab. Here you can choose what to display in the animation. You can resize the size of the Export AVI window by moving the cursor to the edges and holding down the left mouse button and dragging to suit.
Select 3D using Dates, 3D Legend and Focused Time, then resize and move them in the preview window. At the top of the screen you have the Preview Bar which you can move to check your animation before export Dropdown box

Before printing, set the required view and aspect ratio, for example to suit a landscape print. Also you can move the focus time in order to take a snap shot at a particular date. 1. Select

Synchro gives you the ability to quickly add a map image or any sort of texture that can be added to the SP file; this could be a company logo, annotation etc. We will create a map texture to sit under the office building model. 1. You must prepare a map image and crop it to suit. For this training we will use training project site.jpg 2. Select Navigator>
