Topic: Donating blood Thesis: By donating blood you can help save lives of people around the world that are in need  but also help your own health just as much. Introduction 1. Most of us have donated blood at least once in our life time or have seen the Red Cross at our school but how many of us actively donate. 2. Donating blood is something so simple that we could co uld all do and through research I have many reasons why you should donate blood. Body I.

According to America’s Blood Centers 1 in 7 people that enter a hospital will need  blood. A. There are different parts of your blood that can be separated and donated. 1. The first one is whole blood that isn’t separated and can donate in the complete from. (used for surgery or trauma victims) 2. There are the red cells which are used to replace the lack or red cells. (surgery & child birth) 3. Platelet transfusions are used for those that lack platelets because the y aren’t able to produce them in their bone marrow or people who lack them due their  disease. (cancer & leukemia) 4. Plasma is useful on its own because it is used to produce other blood  products for the treatments of diseases. B. Although the severity of the illness determines the amount of blood needed there is many patients that need blood in order to have a fighting chance at life. 1. Someone involved in a serious traffic accident will need anywhere from 2050 units of blood. 2. A cancer patient undergoing treatment requires 5-7 units of blood and 20 units of platelets. 3. Heart or liver transplants require 30-40 units of blood, 30 units of platelets, and 25 units of fresh frozen plasma which is one the products of plasma. 4. C. Blood cannot be manufacture so it can only come from donors. 1. According to the American Red Cross only about 38 percent of our   population is eligible to donate. 2. Of that 38 percent approximately about 7 percent do so. Donating blood can benefit the donor in many different ways.

A. The most important one is the self-gratification knowing that you have helped someone in need. 1. Personally it is an awesome experience giving blood not knowing exactly who you are helping but know that someone out there in need appreciates the help. 2. It feels even better when you are thanked personally by the person you helped. B. Other than emotional gratification it also can improve your health especially for  men. 1. Donating blood can be helpful either gender in the regard that you are technically receiving a free checkup when you donate blood. 2. For men donating blood can help with iron overload which could be a deadly  problem in men. 3. A quote from Healthmd.com reads, “Blood donation removes some of the excess iron which can cause free radical formation in the body. In fact, studies have shown that men who donate blood on a regular basis have a lower risk of heart disease. With heart disease being the numbe r one cause of  death in males, this is, indeed, an important health benefit of donating  blood.” C. If the first two options weren’t enough to convince you to donate blood the third one might. 1. Some blood banks offer cash compensation for the plasma donations. 2. If you don’t have a problem with the ethics involved in selling you blood  plasma eHow says you can make up to 60$ a week or 240$ a month if you donate the max amount of times. Donating blood is helps many people and is something you should consider doing. A. Donating blood is super simple and is something most us can do. 1. Donating blood is broken down into steps: registration, medical history and mini-physical, donation and refreshments. 2. The whole process takes about an hour of your time but you the donation  process takes about 10 minutes. B. Donating can be done once every 56 days so essentially every 2 months. 1. Plasma regenerates in about 24 hours so that can be donate/sold twice a week. 2. Platelets donors can give every 7 days. C. It is very simple to find a place to donate and I encourage you all to do so. 1. All you have to do is go online and visit the American red cross site and you can find many places in your area 2. You can call and make an appointment or you can wait till the Red Cross comes to you. Conclusion: A. Donating blood is needed to help patients around the world. B. I’m confident that you learned enough about the need of blood donations and that you will be encouraged to do so.
