SURPASS NGN Overlay Solutions Taking Stock of the Situation SURPASS supports LifeWorks, the Siemens vision and strategy strategy for the future of telecommunications.. SURPASS opens the door communications to the world of Next Generation Networks with its attractive applications and smooth migration towards all-IP and optical networks. It provides provides the building building blocks for your network of the future: s Next Generation Switching Carrier-grade and customized Voice over IP solutions are complemented by a wide range of attractive converged voice/data applications. s Next Generation Optics Flexible solutions for migrating your transport network towards NGN while keeping track of OPEX. s Next Generation Access A complete range of flexible access solutions offering any voice, data and video service required for today and tomorrow. s Next Generation Network Management Comprehensive Comprehensiv e management solutions tio ns based on standards and open interfaces, guaranteeing evolution capability and the fastest possible launch of new services.
The Next Generation Network presents a persuasive value proposition to network operators. Functionality is decoupled from hardware, allowing the operator much more flexibility in installing, configuring, growing, and operating the various components of the network. Its design af fords significant revenue and cost advantages. On the revenue side, by centralizing applications and service control, you can introduce new services faster faster.. And new IP-enabled services deliver an enriched experience to the end user – as well as greater profit potential to the operator – by converging the best attributes of voice, data, and video communications in more adaptive and intuitive sessions. Delivering these capabilities over a single platform and across a simplified network structure eases cost pressures on operators who are otherwise laden with separate networks to scale and maintain. As indicated in Figure 1, recent studies confirm that reductions in operational costs, the ability to offer new services, new service bundles and scalability advantages are key drivers of Next Generation Network deployment plans by major network operators. Widespread recognition of the need to migrate to the Next Generation Network does not, however, diminish the pressure to do so in a financially sound manner. manner. Indeed, the economic slowdown in much of the world is driving many operators to expand their early thinking on how best to implement the Next Generation Network.

Many operators seek extension solutions, in which TDM investment is capped and the Next Generation Network is deployed to accommodate their ever-growing voice networks. Other operators pursue replacement solutions in which Next Generation Network elements replace faulty or manufacturer-discontinued TDM switches. Today, we recognize that many of you are considering overlay solutions in which investment in the Next Generation Network is incremental to and independent of your legacy systems. Appreciating the Implications Heightened interest in the overlay approach reflects two broad trends: a) Market challenges are fostering a change in investment priorities Many operators are experiencing erosion in their core voice business as a result of economic contraction, wireless substitution, competition from new entrants and premise-based solutions. Without voice line growth as a driver driver,, they are shifting their investment priorities away from cap and grow scenarios. Under constrained budgets, replacement projects and network overhauls that will help operators save future operating expenses are losing favor to small-scale projects that address more immediate concerns. Overlay solutions offer an incremental, success-based approach to building the Next Generation Network. After the aggressive cost cutting of recent years, operators are now focused on solutions that will help them increase top-line revenues.
Operational Costs
With many operators having achieved commendable improvements in their balance sheets, the push toward qualitative growth is overtaking the need for quantitative growth. This has set the tone for revenue-, margin- and market-driven purchasing behavior. Many network operators are revising their view of service and feature requirements. They are becoming less concerned with replicating CLASS 5 feature sets and more interested in delivering net gains in functionality. Multimedia capabilities will enhance their position in the communications value chain. After upgrading much of their network to support two-way digital communications, many cable operators – in the race to triple play – are allocating investment toward voice telephony. b) At the same time, market opportunities for new services are becoming clearer Successful trials and initial VoIP rollouts are assuaging users’ concerns over VoIP technology and Quality of Service. One-wire cost advantages of IP telephony are driving more enterprises toward IP solutions above and beyond IP contact centers. A proliferation of native IP clients and broadband access subscribers is rapidly expanding the addressable market for converged services and applications. An overlay approach helps the network operator accommodate demand for new services without touching the CLASS 5 network. A lower-cost service platform will help operators achieve highly competitive pricing,
which will further stimulate demand. Regulators are continuing down the path of forming policies that encourage infrastructure investment that is tied to the deployment of broadband-enabled services.

Our SURPASS NGN Overlay Solutions help you capitalize on the flexibility presented by an overlay approach. We believe this flexibility will help you deploy new services more quickly than the competition and capture market share and deploy services more cheaply, increase profits and also deploy services where the competition cannot and create new markets. These advantages will help you migrate to Next Generation Network very profitably. SURPASS hiQ 8000 supports the LifeWorks concept and offers next generation applications that enable you to play a major role in this new world of communication. Providing new IP-based services will help you satisfy upcoming and evolving customer demands, tap into new revenue sources and lead the emerging market. From our extensive work in modeling the cost-benefit relationship associated with our solutions, we have reached certain conclusions. The revenue opportunities they will enable you to exploit over a six to eight year period will help you realize an internal rate of return (IRR) on your investment in excess of 100%. Breakeven occurs in less than three years. And offering new services over fewer network elements (a lower cost platform) assures that you’ll achieve the margins you need to improve your bottom line.

SURPASS Voice over Cable Enter the Rich Voice Market – and Grow Your Bottom Line As a cable operator, you started by providing CATV services such as basic cable, movie channel and pay-per-view. Then the high volume data generated by the Internet created a demand for broadband access and you attacked this new market with cable modems to provide high speed Internet access. After having built up an access network for TV and data, why not get into the major profit generator – the voice market? You are ideally situated to leverage your access networks, and your position as a bundled services provider will allow quick penetration of the high revenue voice market. This is, and will remain, the most profitable telecommunication service in the near future. Besides the revenue increase, diversification and service bundling of TV, Internet and voice will improve your customer retention.
8
Benefit from Your Unique Position You own the access and have a huge customer base. You are perfectly suited to diversify your product portfolio by offering a complete service bundle consisting of video, cable TV, high-speed Internet access and high-quality telephony services. In addition, your unique position is made even stronger due to the fact that your current customers are your best customers, the ones who have more money and are willing to spend it on entertainment. By entering into the voice market you will experience a huge increase in your revenues besides the significant competitive edge you will gain over companies offering services in the traditional manner. Business figures can be further improved by adding multimedia services to the network capabilities. All you have to do is to add certain new components to your existing HFC network – the most expensive part of a network – in order to start benefiting from the revenue generated by voice services. Siemens, with its end-to-end IP carrier-grade SURPASS Voice over Cable solution, will support you at every step in this new challenge. In addition to the existing Cable Modem (CM) and Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS), the SURPASS Voice over Cable solution adds four key elements – the SURPASS hiQ 8000 Softswitch (central
intelligence), SURPASS hiG 1100/1200 Media Gateway (interface with the TDM network), Resource Server (full IP-based announcements and interactive dialogues in different languages) and MTA/eMTA (Multimedia Terminal Adapter or embedded MTA). The Siemens SURPASS Voice over Cable solution has been successful in interoperability tests with all major vendors’ CMTS and MTA equipment in CableLabs. This amply displays Siemens’ high degree of commitment to PacketCable standards and gives you a broad range of options when choosing the best equipment for your network. The SURPASS Voice over Cable solution supports all existing TDM voice features, such as call indication, call restriction and call forwarding features, and regulatory features. It also guarantees interworking with traditional PSTN/ISDN subscribers. SURPASS Voice over Broadband Deploy New Services Faster and Cheaper In the telecommunications market, customers show a growing demand for broadband Internet access. In order to handle the emerging data traffic, carriers build up or expand their IP networks. But why should you use your network only for simple data transport without seizing the opportunity to additionally offer voice or even voice-data converged services over your broadband infrastructure? SURPASS Voice over Broadband is the Siemens carrier-class end-to-end solution for cost-effective provisioning of voice and next generation ser vices to packetbased subscriber lines or customer premises equipment. It combines the power of today’s PSTN feature richness and reliability with the higher bandwidth, flexibility and economic savings of IP-based data networks.
Thrive on the New Generation of Broadband Services The trend towards broadband access (via xDSL, Cable Modem, Ethernet, Wireless Local Loop or Powerline) is already a market fact. Broadband services will grow significantly in the next few years, and you may have invested heavily in your data infrastructure without the revenue benefit you are accustomed to receiving from voice services. In order to succeed, you must restore profitability by more efficiently using your installed infrastructure and offering lucrative add-on services to broadband subscribers, while at the same time reducing future investment costs. The telecommunications markets of today are also highly competitive, giving your customers the opportunity to choose their provider at will. Since business customers have a high impact on your revenues, it is essential to keep them satisfied. But how can you address these customers? SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) and SME (Small and Medium Enterprise) customers often require broadband data in combination with several voice lines, and you have the solution for them – SURPASS Voice over Broadband.
10
The SURPASS Voice over Broadband solution provides you with the Next Generation Network way of transporting voice and data over any broadband access media such as xDSL, Hybrid Fiber-Coax, MetroEthernet, Wireless Local Loop, WiFi or Powerline. In essence, you must add three key elements to the core of your network and place IP clients in your customers’ premises. The core elements are the SURPASS hiQ 8000 Softswitch (central intelligence), SURPASS hiG 1100/1200 Media Gateway (interface with the TDM network) and Resource Server (IP-based announcements and interactive dialogues in different languages). Possible IP clients are CPG (Customer Premises Gateway), IAD (Integrated Access Devices), IP phone, or a softphone. Since SURPASS hiQ 8000 is compliant with IETF RFCs and ITU recommendations, IP clients can support any one of the following protocols: SIP, H.323 or MGCP/H.248. VoIP Services Drive New Growth Our Voice over Broadband solution will help you achieve a competitive advantage in the residential and small business sectors of your market. You will be positioned to offer new voice and data services at highly competitive prices, while achieving very attractive margins. And you will fortify your position in the battle for broadband access market share. Among incumbent local operators, some loss of traditional POTS revenue is likely to occur with the introduction of VoIP services. However, reduced subscriber churn, revenues from new customers, more revenue from existing customers, additional broadband access
subscriptions, and greater profit potential from new features collectively outweigh the risks associated with cannibalization. Operators launching VoIP-based services in new regions will benefit immediately by saving on average some 50% to 60% in initial outlay for network equipment, depending on the scale and scope of their commercial rollouts.
Your network grows in step with demand in your markets. The risk of low service adoption is far less than with traditional network solutions, which cannot cost-effectively address markets with variations in service demand. This allows you to capture market share, deploy services less expensively, increase profits, deploy services where others cannot, and create new markets.
The centralized service platform and streamlined architecture of our Voice over Broadband solution results in a network that is easier and cheaper to operate, maintain, and grow.
