PREFACE T h i s little \-olume of prayers was compiled and transliterated by my husband, Rabbi Herbert S. Goldstein. and myself. expressly for the occasion of the wedding of our sister, Bertha Marion Fischel, to Doctor Henry A. Rafsky. Aside from serving a s a souvenir for the wedding guests. we feel that this is a constructive piece of Jewish work. ior it will enable those who have never had the opportunity of learning Hebrew to follon- the reading of the prayers, and t o pray themselves in the Holy Tongue, the language in which the prayers were originally ~ v r i t t e n . Transliteration will also aid those who read H e b r e w imperfectly, unconsciously teaching them to read it more correctly, for transliteration represents the phonetics of the language. l y e hope the day may come. in this country, when transliteration of our sacred tongue will be unnecessary, but a t the present time, w e firmly believe that it fills a long felt want. and that it will g o far towards bridging- the g a p between the old generation
and the new, between foreign-born parents and their i\merican children. LI-e have introduced into this volume the transliteration of the Z'-wir-011s the Sal)bath ljon~e songs. In this way \ve hope to bring hack the old time Jexvish Sabbath atmosphere into the home. IVe \\ant to take this means cji expressing our indebtedness and appreciation to our parents, Mr. and Mrs. H a r r y Fi:chel, ior making possible the puhlication of this work. \Ye also want to thank Mr. Ralph Korn and Mr. Leon S. Furman for their deep interest in this undertaking and for their very helpful suggestions. (Mrs. Herbert S.) Rebecca Fischel Goldstein.

my cup on the day when I call.
Into his hand I com-
mend my spirit, when I sleep and when I wake: And with my spirit, my body also: the Lord is with me, and I will not fear. Blessed art thou, 0 Lord our God, Kiilg of the universe, wllo makest the bands of sleep to fall upon mine eyes, and slumber upon mine eye-lids.
May it
be Thy will, 0 Lord m y God and God of my fathers. to suffer me to lie down in peace and to let me rise up again in peace.
Let not my thoughts trouble me,
nor evil dreams, nor evil fancies, but let my rest be perfect before Thee.
O lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep
the sleep of death, for it is Thou who givest light to the apple of the eyes. Blessed art Thou, O Lord, who givest light to the whole world in Thy glory.
