COMPANY H.P. Well Screen is a one of Europe’s largest manufacturers in sand control products for the Oil & Gas and Water industry. Throughout our more than 20 year history, from which the first 8 years as Houston Well Screen, we became an independent organization offering a complete range of well screen products and slotting & perforating services.
Our strength not only rests with our products and service, but with the skills of our people, the technical knowledge and our 20 years of experience in the field. We are recognized for our excellence in customer solutions, creativity, flexibility and no-nonsense mentality, coupled with short delivery times and competitive prices.
The manufacturing capabilities of our production plant in Holland enables us to respond quickly to any demand for any well in Europe, Russia, Africa and the Middle East.
In 2002 H.P. Well Screen inaugurated a new 3000 square meter production facility with the latest technology of manufacturing equipment.

SAND CONTROL SOLUTION Production reliability is essential in offshore and maximum productivity is important anywhere. The control of sand flow in unconsolidated formations can be one of the most critical problems in down-hole well completion. The sand control technology has developed over the years involving chemical and mechanical solutions. Still the simplest and by far the most reliable and effective method of sand control is the use of sand-retention:
SLOTTED LINERS
&
WELL SCREENS
Nowadays an open hole completion with stand alone screens is a well balanced solution for highly deviated and horizontal wells where sand control has to be achieved without gravel packing. H.P. Well screen is your partner providing a total range of sand-retention products starting from slotted liners to pre-packed screens.
All our products will bring you: A low risk of plugging. A high inflow area.
The ability to produce fines allowing increased well productivity.
A simple installation, similar as running liners. A mechanical robustness. Low total costs compared to wire mesh or
expendable screen types and techniques where fluid pumping is involved. All products from H.P. Well Screen have precise slot openings. They can be used directly in the formation as a stand alone screen, with any further assistance of gravel packs. To choose the most suitable sand control product, the following factors need to be considered. Still, the most important single design factor of any sand retention product is the correct sizing of the slot opening in relation to the formation grain size.
3
WELL SCREEN DESIGN AND SLOT SIZE The design objective for well screens is stoppage of sand infiltration without excessive reduction of flow capacity. In order to determine the proper gauge for well screens, as well as, the proper gravel pore space, the formation grain size must be known.
Without Gravel Pack
In this situation the sand control is base on the bridging theory and slot openings must be sized in direct relationship to the formation sands. Sand bridges are formed across the slot opening when the slot opening is about 2 times the sand grain diameter, preventing further particle movement. If the size of the grains varies, retention of the larger particles causes smaller particles to bridge behind them. To achieve stable bridges the individual sand grains should bridge on, rather than in, the slot openings. In formations with relatively coarse-grained, high-permeability sands, controlling sand and maintaining the well’s productivity is successful when a certain amount of formation sand can be tolerated. In stand-alone screen completions without the use of back-surging or pump-in treatments, the finer particles are not effective removed from the sand-face of the near-wellbore sand mass. If these particles are retained on the screen/slotted liner, they can eventually plug it and reduce well productivity. However, if they flow through the screen or slotted liner and do not plug it or form a sand-plug in the well, the well will produce indefinitely despite the fact that sand production has not been completely eliminated. For sands with a broad size distribution, a generally accepted guideline for designing a screen is to specify a slot width that is 2 times as large as the 10 percentile grain diameter. This sizing allows the finer particles to be produced, resulting in a natural gravel pack formed from the larger sand grains. For more uniform sands, screen openings equal to the 10-15 percentile formation sand diameter should be used. For a good result for non-uniform fine sand, we can take the 40 percentile sand diameter analysis. The recommended slot opening can be read off the horizontal scale.
(The “10% diameter” is the sieve size through which 90%, by weight, of the total formation sample will pass)

With Gravel pack
Gravel packing is probably the most popular mechanical sand-control technique used in water, oil and gas wells. The gravel pack stabilizes the borehole and filters the formation sand from the flow, while producing only very fine particles that can move through the gravel pack. Screens or slotted liners used in combination with a gravel pack function as a gravel retention device and need a different design. Ideally, slots should be as wide as possible while retaining gravel without restricting flow of fluids and interstitial fines. The loss of even a small amount of gravel may have a negative effect on the completion. Therefore, slot openings need to be sized for complete gravel retention. Proper sizing can be determined from sieve analysis of the gravel.
Example of a gravel pack design
The slot should not be wider than 50% to 70% of the smallest gravel-size diameter to avoid production of gravel. Because the flow capacity of screens and slotted liners are high, sizing the slot width on the low side will not restrict well productivity and will tend to avoid production of gravel.

WELL SCREEN DESIGN AND FLOW A screen/slotted liner is a surface separation media allowing a free flow of liquids. The comparison between different screen structures can be made comparing the permeability of the screen: Open area and pressure loss

WELL SCREEN DESIGN AND MATERIALS We manufacture our screen products according to customer requirements. The casing, liners or base pipe can be selected from standard API grade K55 up to 110cr13 for special conditions. In particular corrosive or hot environments, a special alloy may be selected. The well screens can be manufactured from Stainless steel 304, 316L, 904L, Duplex, Superduplex, Hastelloy C276, SMO etc. We keep in stock many exotic materials, so please do not hesitate to ask for specific requirements. Contrary to the un- and low alloyed steels, stainless steel is not so much exposed by a general abrasive corrosion over the full surface, but would under certain circumstance suffer from a selective corrosion. In order to meet Pitting and Stress Cracking corrosions a great number of steels and alloys have been developed. For strains caused by chlorides the use of steels with raising chromium and molybdenum contents is recommended. For strains caused by sulfide all copper- nickel alloys offer higher resistance then the alloys with increased molybdenum contents.
