Individual Leachfield System, Klieng Cot Aron
Project
Community Infrastructure for 112 houses in Blok A, village of Klieng Cot Aron (water supply, sanitation, roads and drainage)
Location
Blok A, Klieng Cot Aron, Baitussalam, Aceh Besar
Implementing Organization
Planning and supervision by SLGSR in cooperation with RRHS / GITEC Implementation financed by KfW
Specific site conditions
Very high ground water; periurban settlement; small house plots
Technical description of system
Design criteria according to guidelines for standard reconstruction house Septic tanks: Factory manufactured, prefabricated horizontal concrete tanks; 850 l capacity; weight ca. 1 ton. Leachfields: Individual 10 m2 vegetated leachfields fitted to each house plot individually. P-Traps on grey water piping
Total costs per household
7.000.000 IDR (includes tank, transport, leachfield and piping)
O&M requirements
Sludge has to be pumped out in a 1.5 – 2 years interval.
Advantages
Septic tanks are watertight, robust and will last very long. Leachfields could be adapted flexibly to small house plots. System is simple to install and relatively cheap with minimum treatment standard.
Suppliers
Septic Tank: Dusaspun, Jakarta Contact: Ibu Wenny (sales and marketing) HP: +62 – (0) 812 937 1829 Email:

Individual Leachfield System, Kajhu
Project
Sample system for an individual leachfield
Location
Kajhu, Baitussalam, Aceh Besar
Implementing Organization
Planning and implementation by SLGSR
Specific site conditions
Very high groundwater table, very small house plot
O&M requirements
Sludge has to be pumped out in 1,5 years interval.
Technical description of system
Design criteria according to guidelines for standard reconstruction house Septic tank: locally manufactured cylindrical shaped fiberglass septic tank, 900 l capacity; round shape provides protection against soil pressure; concrete plate on top of septic tank to avoid floating (0,25 m3 concrete).Leachfield: Individual 10 m2 vegetated leachfield split into two fields, each field 5 m2 P-Trap on grey water piping
Advantages
Septic tank is watertight and locally manufactured. Leachfield was split into two fields according to house owner’s whish. System is simple to install and cheap with minimum treatment standard.
Disadvantages
Leachfields provide only minimum treatment standard.
Total costs per household
4.500.000 IDR

Communal Leachfield for 4 houses, Blang Krueng
Project
Sample system for a communal leachfield
Location
Blang Krueng, Baitussalam, Aceh Besar
Implementing Organization
Planning and implementation by SLGSR
Specific site conditions
Rural character of the village, houses spread out, small clusters of 3-5 houses, high groundwater tables up to 40 cm Design criteria according to guidelines for standard reconstruction house Ball shaped septic tank and adjacent leachfield for 3-4 houses Septic tanks: 2 locally available fiberglass septic tanks, each one 1000 l capacity; black and grey water separated; Leachfield: communal 40 m2 (40m x 1m); 65 cm depth P-Trap on grey water piping
Advantages
Septic tank is watertight and locally available. Large leachfield can grow food plants. Costs are reduced due to communal design. System is simple to install and cheap with minimum treatment standard.
Total costs per household
2.000.000 IDR (costs for total system: 6.000.000 IDR)
Disadvantages
Leachfields provide only minimum treatment standard.

Communal wetland system for School, SMA Highschool, Klieng Cot Aron
Project
Sanitation System for Senior Highschool, for 500 students
Location
Klieng Cot Aron, Baitussalam, Aceh Besar
Implementing Organization
Planning and implementation by SLGSR
Specific site conditions
Very high groundwater table, school inside settlement area; 3 school buildings, each with one set of toilets
O&M requirements
Sludge has to be pumped out approximately once in two years; constructed wetland has to be maintained (watered) during holidays until plant roots are deep and strong.
Technical description of system
3 subsurface flow wetland systems with septic tank – wetland – leachfield: Design criteria: 1 PE for schools is calculated with 24l / day greywater and 6l / day blackwater. (30 % of 1 PE standard reconstruction house) Septic tanks: prefabricated concrete tanks; total capacity around 7 m3. Subsurface flow wetlands: Dimensions: W-1 : 2m x 10 m (adjacent leachfield: 10m2) W-2 : 3m x 10m (discharge in natural pond) W-3 : 3m x 50m (adjacent leachfield 20 m2) Depth of wetlands: 0,7m. Wetlands constructed with high density poly ethylene (HDPE) geo-membrane, HD100 (1 mm)
Advantages
High quality septic tanks are watertight and robust. Subsurface flow wetland provides high treatment standard.
Disadvantages
Transport of tanks from Jakarta did increase the costs of the septic tanks. Maintenance for subsurface flow wetland required at the beginning;
