s you know, many of my editorials are inspired (if that’s the right term!) by observations made on my long trips to and from work and I was struck with a thought recently when I stopped at the services for breakfast toast and coffee. I was served exclusively by Polish people and they were all incredibly cheerful and polite and actually raised my spirits, so I in turn left feeling cheerful and got to thinking - if only we appreciated our own country the way these immigrant workers do and saw it through their eyes, maybe we could start to rebuild the pre- and post war spirit my grandparents so often told me about. Sometimes the very things that make us what we are can be taken for granted and these Polish workers certainly made me think of my own attitude to life. On another occasion, I was once again noshingthis time on a bacon roll - whilst idly watching the service station big screen television. On screen was a report on Africa and how a certain charity was helping villagers in a remote area by teaching them to ride motorbikes. Now I know this will be seen as life saving progress by some but I couldn’t help thinking was this really the way forward, as a young lad sat on his bike in front of a mud hut, surrounded by harsh but beautiful scrubland for as far as the eye could see. I suddenly had a vision of concrete and motorways, traffic queues and exhaust fumes and Africa as a reflection of New York or London and couldn’t help thinking it was wrong. On a more upbeat note its re-assuring to see that age can’t keep a good man down, as Sylvester Stallone gloves up one last time in ‘Rocky Balboa’ at the grand old age of sixty and still looks fantastic. In fact, the film is the best in the series since the original and a fitting end to an iconic character. It gives hope to all of us who were young men watching ‘Rocky’ thirty years ago. Stallone proves that, even at sixty, an old dog doesn’t just have to lie down by the fire and accept his fate. Read our in-depth review of ‘Rocky Balboa’ inside and realise that :“It ain’t over ‘til it’s over!”
