FADE IN: EXT. PAVEMENT. OUTSIDE A RICKETY BAR -- EARLY MORNING AN OLD MAN lies passed out. Many FOOTSTEPS pass by him, avoiding stepping over him or tripping on his account. We hear passersby mutter and crib as their walk in and walk out from left and right. PASSERBY 1 (O.S.) Iska roj ka naatak hai... PASSERBY 2 (O.S.) Kahin aur jaake kyun nahin marta... PASSERBY 3 (O.S.) Bewda idhar-ich pada rehta hai pee ke.... PASSERBY 4 (O.S.) Yeh bewde ka kya terror tha nahin ek time pe... PASSERBY 5 (O.S.) Varadrajan ka right hand man tha...abhi dekho...lawaris kutte ka makif ho gaya hai... The Old Man turns and groans in his sleep. A PAIR OF HANDS throw a bucket full of water on him. He groans some more, mumbles something and goes back to sleep. FADE OUT: FADE IN: Opening credits begin with music. A 30 sec V.O. announces brief facts about Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). RECAP: Opening Credits end FADE OUT: FADE IN: INT. NCB BOMBAY. ZD'S CABIN -- DAY Zonal Director Krishnan nods and casually drops the pen on the newspaper. The newspaper has the page open where the headline reads ARE THERE UNDERCOVERS IN MANALI? Usmaan and Brinda look at the rolling pencil and then at Krishnan. Krishnan looks at Brinda. KRISHNAN Circus! Orders the 'sirf observe karna.' Par tumne aur Mahendra ne poora circus bana diya.
2. Brinda lowers her eyes. Usmaan sits nudging his upper lip with his thumb, while looking at Brinda. BRINDA Hum Raja...Ansari ke aadmi ke kaafi kareeb pahunch gaye the... She hesitates, looks at Usmaan. same.

WASIM Rati... He tries to step closer. She pushes him away and moving the clothes aside disappears behind them. He follows. She runs away from him, parting the clothes line. He follows. Catches her sleeve. She snatches her sleeve back. It gets torn. She stops. He stops too. tears in her eyes.

RATI (hurt re; kurta) Naya tha. Malum hai. Wasim walks closer.

WASIM (apologetically) Ki...Kitna jhagda karti hai tu... RATI Kurti phaad di meri. Aur blame bhi mujhe de raha hai... BRINDA Mahendra. USMAAN (dryly) Didn't Krishnan just say - he's a good I.O. BRINDA Good at what? Taking credit. Un dono ki jaan bachane ka idea mera tha sir. Maine Mahendra ko kaha tha. She stops her blabber as she sees Usmaan looking at her. USMAAN (nodding real slow) Mujhe bhi yahi laga tha. Brinda knows she's shot herself in the foot. INT. ASHWANI'S HOUSE -- DAY Bare walls except for the rectangular stains that say there were once photo-frames here. Empty floor. No furniture. The place looks like as if somebody is about to move in. Or probably just moved out with everything. Ashwani crosses the frame. He is wearing his trek pants and a tshirt. He walks to another room with a coffee mug in his hand. INT. ASHWANI'S HOUSE. BEDROOM -- CONTINUOUS Ashwani comes to his bedroom. Three empty walls around.
Only a mattress on the floor.
He sits on the mattress with his mug and stares ahead. The fourth wall is not empty. It's has newspaper cuttings and charts stuck all over with scotch tape. CLOSE ON Ashwani as he sips his coffee.
His eyes look ahead.
CLOSE ON Wall. Ansari's name in the center. No photo yet. A line from it leads to another chit saying Bansuri Seth. But there is a question mark there. MONEY ? Below Ansari's name is Wasim's name and photo. Next to it is Raja's name. Then Pinto's photo and name. Then Rajesh's photo with a cross mark against it. Another chit says DRUGS SUPPLY and has photo of seven people arrested who had come from Dubai with suitcases. Above it is the photo of Pinto, Musa and the Nigerian diplomat Emmanuel Nwude (the photo that Vashisht had brought). Above it is the newspaper cutting of assassination of Jagat Tripathi. Kartik comes forward and embraces Mahendra. Vidya has brought some flowers which she puts on the side table. KARTIK Aur bhai Mr. Rambo. Dikha diya action. MAHENDRA (sheepish in front of Vidya) Rambo nahin James Bond. Tu bhool raha hai saath mein ladki bhi thi. Kartik sits down next to him on the bed. Ladki?

Selva's manner becomes hurried as he listens. He immediately leaves the table. And signals waiter for his bill. EXT. OUTSIDE IRANI CAFE -- MORNING The car takes a u-turn and drives to the front of the cafe. stops at the junction of an alley and the main road. Selva comes out in a rush. car.

Ansari takes a few steps up until his face is clearly seen in the light. Ansari looks at Selva who is tied to a chair, after having received some kind of thrashing. Raja is sitting in front of Selva. Brinda. She turns. USMAAN (CONT'D) File. He nods at the file lying on his desk. Brinda looks at the file. And when she looks back at Usmaan, she slowly shakes her head. BRINDA (low) Nahin sir. Mujhe yeh charge nahin chahiye. Maine uss wakt bhi Krishnan sir se kaha tha ke woh jisse chahen yeh charge de sakte hain. Usmaan considers.

MAHENDRA (bit off) Theek hoon. JULIE (apologetically) Tumne kal bahut phone try kiya na mera. MAHENDRA Haan. Lekin tumhe kyun fursat hogi. jo wapas aa gaya hai.

JULIE Oh...tumhe pata hai. MAHENDRA Tum khud ko jitna iss burqe mein chupa lo. Sach mujhse nahin chupa paoogi. JULIE Haan Mahendra. Main Raghu ke darr se hi is tarah chupp ke aayi. 29. Mahendra's eyes dart back to her. MAHENDRA Agar haan toh? Julie smiles, mockingly. JULIE Par darr toh mujhe tere gusse se bhi lagta hai. Iska matlab rehna toh tere saath bhi nahin chahiye mujhe. MAHENDRA Bhaad mein ja. JULIE Paida hui thi - bhaad mein. itni badi hui hoon.

Expectantly she turns around. It's not who she was expecting. As always Usmaan has not turned up to pamper her, cajole her. Three kids aged between 6 to 10 walk up to the waterfront with tiny fishing poles in their hands. Disappointed Brinda turns back. The kids also sit down near the edge and dip their poles into the water. Brinda waits.

Kids wait too.
For fish.
Once in a while she will pull her cell phone out to check. Recheck if by accident she missed any call. But nothing. Once in a while some kid would mutter 'aye phansi phansi.' But nothing. And the kids would hang their heads in disappointment.
30. Brinda looks at them irritatedly at first. Looks at her watch. Her phone. Nothing. She looks at the kids at last. BRINDA Ma...main bhi try karoon? The youngest among the kids passes his fishing pole to her. holds the pole and sits down next to them.
She
Still lost in her thoughts she dips the pole in the water. The kids look at her briefly. Brinda stares blankly at the water. The force brings her back.
The tightening of the pole.
KIDS (euphoric) Aye phansi...phansi... They all spring around Brinda while she wakes up to reality. They all hold the pole for her and pull the catch out. And drop it on the concrete. The fish flip flops, gasping. Kids scream joyously. Brinda looks at them and smiles. Seeing them laugh she laughs too. But her eyes betray her and tears flow out. She starts crying with hiccups. The kids stop celebrating as they see her crying. She turns her face away from them. Sees the fish flapping on the concrete. Brinda sniffles. Tries to control herself. But ends up crying more.
Wipes her tears.
The youngest kid steps forward, picks up the flapping fish and throws it back in water. The fish swims away. He turns to Brinda and puts his hand on her shoulder. YOUNGEST KID Gayi machli...Kuch nahin hua usko...kuch nahi hua...royo nahin...rote nahin.. He tries to console her just like he must have seen his elders do to him. EXT. MAHIM CREEK -- LATE NOON Atop a huge pipeline some YOUNGSTERS are sitting and smoking. One of them spots something and throws his cigarette aside. The others follow his look. There's a body floating in the water. CUT TO: EXT. MANGROVE DOCK. ISOLATED AREA -- LATE NOON Rope is being slowly pulled out of the water. Tied to the end of the rope are three waterproof plastic bags.
31. The men pulling the rope are being supervised by Raja. One of them takes a knife out and cuts opens the waterproof covering on the bag. Raja peeps inside. and calls.
Smiles.
Then he takes out his cell phone
INT. PCO -- LATE NOON Ansari picks up the phone. RAJA'S VOICE Bhai. ANSARI Haan. RAJA'S VOICE Mil gaya. Ansari smiles.
Puts the phone down.
EXT. TERRACE IN AGARIPADA -- LATE NOON Same terrace. the P.C.O.
Usmaan's gaze follows Ansari as he comes out of
P.O.V. USMAAN Ansari goes inside his heavily guarded building. Usmaan takes a pad and a pen out. He steps back from the corner and starts drawing the ground plan of the neighborhood, placing Ansari's building in the center. Two fingers pierce into Usmaan's back. ASHWANI (O.S.) Hands up! Usmaan panics. Drops his pad. Ashwani steps forward giggling. Usmaan face is red with anger. The more Ashwani sees it the more his mocking laughter grows. ASHWANI (CONT'D) (laughing) You almost had a heart attack. Usmaan gathers himself, breathing heavily. USMAAN Who the hell you think you are?
Hunh?
Ashwani controls his laughter. But feels no shame. up his pen and pad from the floor. ASHWANI Aapki shakal dekhne wali thi Usmaan sahab.

32. USMAAN Tumhari toh dikhane layak bhi nahin hai. Iss tarah ka behuda mazaak mujhe pasand nahin hai. Aainda mat karna. ASHWANI Ok.

USMAAN Tum mera peecha kar rahe the? ASHWANI Hum dono Ansari ka peecha kar rahe hain toh - iss tarah milna-julna toh hota hi rahega. Ashwani looks around the terrace. Disgusted, Usmaan shakes his head, slaps his pad on his thigh to shake the dust off and then closes it. He is about to walk away when ASHWANI (CONT'D) Aapko 'thanks' kehna chah raha tha kaafi din se. Wasim stands as he sees Ansari. WASIM Unn...haan bhai...main aata par... Ansari walks behind his desk. ANSARI Par var kya...intezar kar raha tha tera...Dayal Babu ko bhi intezar karvaya... WASIM Main bhai woh Rajesh ke yahan tha... Ansari almost freezes.

WASIM (CONT'D) Woh...uske Baba aaye hain aapse kuch baat karne... Ansari remains silent. But then -

41. She finds Usmaan staring at both of them. But Usmaan makes no movement. His eyes blink not. His feet move not. The shadow from the venetian creates a strange pattern on his face.
