MESSAGE FROM SMU PRESIDENT
message from SMU PRESIDENT A strong alumni community is integral to any great
university; hence SMU’s 2025 Vision of life-long association with alumni. The relationship is symbiotic - with SMU supporting alumni as they venture out to achieve success and recognition, and our alumni contributing back to bolster the success of their alma mater. The value of SMU’s degree offerings are inextricably linked to the reputation of SMU. Building a strong alumni network matters. Alumni can be great role models and mentors to current students. With their skills and experiences, they can return to counsel and coach students so that they too can excel and uplift the image of the university. Beyond SMU, our alumni are also our ambassadors, both locally and internationally. With their professional and social networks, as well as excelling in their careers and various endeavours, they can contribute to building a strong SMU brand.
As we celebrate SMU’s 15 th anniversary in a short but remarkable 15 years, I am heartened to see the growing involvement involvement of our alumni and encouraged to see them giving back and returning to serve in myriad ways. From my inter interactions actions with alumni at many events and alumni gatherings, I’m glad to witness their passion and enthusiasm for their alma mater. SMU will continue to maintain and build strong connections with our alumni through various modes of engagement. This annual report repor t is one of them. It serves ser ves to keep our alumni updated on past developments and make them a part par t of SMU’s future. To our alumni, thank you for holding the SMU ag high, and for upholding the SMU spirit. This report repor t is a testament to your contributions. Professor Arnoud De Meyer

It will ensure that future graduates are well-prepared for the work wor k place. To give you another reason to come back, SMU is pleased to support suppor t the SMU Alumni Association Association with the launch of an alumni cafe, Tonic-X, at the SMU Concourse. PG ALUMNI networking events Collaborations with Postgraduate Programme Offices
OAR is
not an island and believes that the key to effective engagement is collaboration. This collaboration is particularly crucial for postgraduate students as their tenure of studies is much shorter than that of undergraduate students. The ofce has been collaborating closely with SMU’s postgraduate programme ofces in engaging students as future alumni and reinforcing the SMU identity. This engagement commences from their enrolment orientation to various touch points throughout the year till their graduation. OAR staff participate in orientation events, networking events involving students and alumni events, and graduation celebrations. This smoothens the transition of postgraduate students to alumni, and contributes to the building of a strong postgraduate alumni community. Currently OAR collaborates with postgraduate ofces for 21 postgraduate programmes.

ALUMNI recognition ceremony The
reputation of universities depend on their alumni and students. The success of graduates impact their alma mater mater.. Top universities also depend on the contributions of their alumni. Despite SMU’s relative youth, many alumni have been giving back through donations and volunteerism. Active participation by alumni such as mentoring students, coaching their juniors in in co-curricular activities and for competitions, assisting schools in the student admission process,
indicates to students that our alumni had ver y positive student experiences. It inspires students (our future alumni) to continue their involvement after graduation, thus perpetuating the cycle. Many have also returned to serve as alumni alumni leaders leaders to engage alumni and and built built a strong alumni community. To recognise these special individuals who continue to exemplify the SMU spirit, an Alumni Recognition Ceremony was held on 23rd October 2015. Nominations were received from SMU schools, ofces, student clubs, and alumni. SOCIAL media The SMU alumni community is young and vibrant.
The bonds of our alumni whilst they were students extend beyond the classrooms. Bonds forged whilst working in project groups, at the Freshmen Team Building Camps, participating in co-curricular activities, serving ser ving as student leaders and in student groups, and staying in SMU hostel are enduring and continue long after graduation. To perpetuate the connections, OAR has introduced social media platforms to allow our alumni to maintain and expand their networks.

SMU Alumni Graduation Lion 2015
The relationship between alumni and their alma
mater is symbiotic. The success of our alumni impacts the reputation of SMU, our ability to attract attr act top students, and the career prospects of graduates. Similarly SMU’s stature will impact the value of SMU degrees. The process is self-feeding. Alumni can contribute in terms of time, talents, and resources to sustain and increase the standing of SMU. Philanthropy provides the building blocks for our future and is pivotal in keeping SMU on the cutting edge of international tertiary education. Every gift helps SMU to do something that might not otherwise be possible, from supporting student scholarships and awards, to innovation in our educational programmes and pathbreaking faculty research. In 2015, two alumni Jeff Tung Chi Fung (BBM, 2013) and Benjamin Twoon Wai Mun (BBM, 2013) came together to set up a $1 million P.A.K. Entrepreneurship Fund at LKCSB. This is the largest gift to SMU by our alumni to date. With 1-to-1 government matching, the total sum of $2 million will suppor supportt a LKCSB
Students' Entrepreneurship Club, called Eagles Incubator, and an annual business plan competition. Senior Class Gift
The Senior Class Gift was initiated by the pioneering class who decided that the best legacy they could leave leave behind was to encourage the graduating class to give back. Graduating students contribute towards the gift upon the completion of their education. The gift goes towards the Graduating Class Scholarship Scholar ship to help less fortunate undergraduates. The Class of 2015’s Senior Class Gift amounted to $29,348.
