Condition Monitoring
TechN echNot ote e #CM9 #CM9 OMNI OMNITR TREN END D® Carrying out RPM-normalized measurements efficiently with the ‘TrainSpeed’ function Brief description The RPM is required for the normalization of shock pulse measurement (roller bearing condition) and for the calculation of RPM-variable damage frequencies. The RPM at any measurement location of a machine train can be calculated using the ‘TrainSpeed’ function in OMNITREND - provided that a reference RPM and the corresponding translation ratio between the reference point and the respective measurement location is known. This TechNote shows how to set up the necessary measurement parameters in OMNITREND and how to carry out the measurement with VIBXPERT as part of a route.
Reference RPM n 0 n1 = n0 x 1.0 n2 = n0 x 0.6 n3 = n0 x 0.06 n4 = n0 x 0.01
Machine train with three gear translations
Suitable Suitabl e for... for... Machine trains with a number of measurement locations at which the RPM of the machine elements is different due to gear translation.
dBn
Advantages The RPM no longer needs to be measured at each measurement location, but at a single ‘reference measurement location’. The RPM for all other measurement locations on the machine train is calculated.
Procedure in OMNITREND Set up the machine train with its measurement locations and measurement tasks in the OMNITREND database. Details of how to set up database entries are described in the OMNITREND online help.

RPM normalization for shock pulse measurement (roller bearing condition) and calculation of the (roller bearing) damage frequencies
A summary of the basic steps is described in the following section: ATTENTION The ‘LineSpeed’ function must be deactivated. To check this, click on the ‘Common data’ tab in the hierarchy above the machine train (‘Location’ = North area).
To set up the reference measurement - Activate the ‘TrainSpeed’ function in the ‘Common Data’ tab at machine train level. - Open the ‘Train Data’ tab. - Enter the measurement task for the reference RPM in the ‘Reference task’ field using ‘Drag & Drop’. Manual input of the reference RPM
To manually enter the reference RPM in situ, an RPM transducer must first be created and adapted accordingly to the measurement task: - Open the ‘Transducer Editor’ and click on ‘New Transducer’. - Enter a name for the new transducer (e.g. ‘RPM manual input’). - Enter ‘Manual Input’ as the signal type. - Select ‘Speed’ as the measurement quantity. - Then select the permitted min. and max. value limits (e.g. ‘0-100000’), and click on OK. To change the RPM transducer for the measurement task: - In the tree view, click on the RPM measurement task. - Open the ‘Meas. Type’ tab. - Mark the ‘VIBXPERT transducer’ entry in the ‘Transducer’ field. - Click on ‘Add’ and select the newly created ‘RPM - manual input’ transducer as the transducer for the speed measurement with VIBXPERT.
Create the RPM transducer for ‘Manual input’ (left) and change it for the measurement task (below).
If no ‘Speed’ measurement task has yet been created, create this with the ‘Task Wizard’ and select the newly created RPM transducer (‘RPM - manual input’).
To enter the translation ratio Enter the respective translation ratio for the reference location of each machine and each measurement location on the machine train: Machine: Mark the machine and open the ‘Machine Data’ tab. Measurement location: Mark the measurement location and open the ‘Meas. Data’ tab.

To compile the route and transfer data Open the Route Editor and create a route with the relevant machine train. Connect VIBXPERT to the PC and load the route in the data collector.
Measuring with VIBXPERT - Open the route in VIBXPERT. - Select the measurement task for the reference RPM. - Measure the RPM. If the RPM needs to be entered manually, the ‘Manual input’ screen appears.
