FADE IN: INT. CALL CENTER. OFFICE -- DAY In the cabin DHEER and VIVEK, both in their late twenties, sit worriedly facing three executives from a FINANCE COMPANY. One of them is scrutinizing some papers. EXECUTIVE 1 Do saal pehle aapne humse loan liya tha yeh Call Center shuru karne ke liye. Pichle cheh mahine mein aapke saare clients doosre call centers ke paas chale chal e gaye. Aapke Aapk e saare processes bandh pade hain... The one who was scrutinizing the papers, puts them down. EXECUTIVE 2 Aur teen mahine se staff salary bhi due hai.
The first, seniormost, Executive looks at Dheer. EXECUTIVE 1 Aur iske bawjood aapne 30 lakhs ke Working Capital ka aur request kiya hai? Humein toh yeh darr hai ki aap purane instalmets kaise chukayenge.
Dheer leans a little closer. DHEER
The BPO bubble has busted sir - aap jaante hain.
EXECUTIVE 2 All the more reason that we should not advance more money to you. DHEER Mr. Negi agar aap yeh tees lakh humein denge toh hum apne purane dues clear karke hamare staff ko waapis bula sakte hain. Process dobara shuru kar sakte hain. The seniormost executive smiles lowering his chin a bit.
EXECUTIVE 1 Mr. Dheer I'll tell you what I can give you. Beat.
EXECUTIVE 1 (CONT'D) One month. Ya toh aap iss time mein loan clear kar dijiye. Ya hum collaterals bech ke apna nuksaan poora kar lenge. DHEER Mr. Gulati...sir...

EXECUTIVE 1 That's the best I can do for you. Agar hum aise hi defaulters ke saath lenient hote rahe toh hamara staff chala jayega. On Dheer's face. FADE OUT: FADE IN: Opening credits begin with music. A 30 sec V.O. announces brief facts about Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). RECAP: Opening Credits end FADE OUT: FADE IN: INT. NCB BOMBAY. MAIN HALL -- DAY Back to us, Shiven walks down the hall of NCB. He looks around to meet a welcoming eye, a friendly reciprocation. But sees none.
He reaches Superintendent's cabin and knocks the door. USMAAN (O.S.) Come in. Shiven opens the door. Usmaan looks up, not recognizing the person. SHIVEN Shiven Verma sir. Shiven walks himself in and places the file on Usmaan's table. USMAAN Ahh...Shiven...please sit.
Shiven sits down.
Usmaan lifts the file.
USMAAN (CONT'D) Tea - coffee - anything. Shiven smiles warmly. SHIVEN No sir.
I'm fine.
USMAAN (as he goes through the file) So you met ADG Mr. Nijhawan.

SHIVEN Yes sir. USMAAN Zyada mushkil sawaal toh nahin pooche unhone? SHIVEN Nahin sir. In fact kaafi asaan sawaal pooche. Tabhi toh select ho gaya. Otherwise mujhe toh umeed nahin thi.
Usmaan looks up. USMAAN Ummeed nahin thi - ya confidence nahin tha. SHIVEN Jaisa ACR mera hai - uske rehte toh confidence nahin tha.
USMAAN Khud pe toh hai na confidence.
Shiven simply nods.
Usmaan simply shuts the file.
USMAAN (CONT'D) Don't expect a warm welcome here. We lost a fine officer recently. Tum uski jagah aaye ho. Toh... (shrugs) SHIVEN That's ok sir... (smile) Mujhe aadat hai...
Usmaan puts an envelope in front of him.
It's big and bulging.
USMAAN Isme tumhara NCB i.d. Service revolver aur NCB manual ka ek copy hai. Keep it somewhere
safe.
It's classified.
Shiven nods holding the envelope. Usmaan extends his hand.
Shiven takes it.
Shakes it.
USMAAN (CONT'D) Welcome to Narcotics Control Bureau. wish you good luck.

Shiven simply nods again. SHIVEN Aaj ke liye kya instructions hain sir? USMAAN SIU se important meeting hai do ghante mein. Tum saath chalna. Tab-tak sair kar aao neeche.

Shiven smiles, thinking it's a prank. SHIVEN Sir..
Sair?
Usmaan looks at him. Then straightens himself to look past the glass window of his cabin. First to left. USMAAN Tumhare baithne ke liye table... Then frowning he looks to right. to come in.
Spots Mukherjee, gestures him
Mukherjee walks up to Usmaan's door, opens and enters. MUKHERJEE Yes sir? USMAAN Mukherjee. Yeh Shiven Verma Verm a hain. as I.O. join kar rahe hain.
Aaj se
Mukherjee briefly looks at Shiven and just nods. SHIVEN Hello. USMAAN Yeh office mein baithna chahte hain...koi desk khaali hai... Mukherjee turns, looks over his shoulder.
Then looks back.
MUKHERJEE Nahin hai sir.
Usmaan looks at Shiven. USMAAN Sair hi kar aao. Shiven nods. USMAAN (CONT'D) Iske samaan ke liye ek locker de dena. MUKHERJEE I'll try sir. Mukherjee gestures Shiven to follow him. Shiven leaves his seat and nods at Usmaan. Usmaan has already busied himself with some files. CUT TO: INT. NCB BOMBAY. MAIN HALL -- DAY Mukherjee walks ahead, Shiven a little behind him.

MUKHERJEE Kaunse department se hai? SHIVEN Income Tax sir. They keep walking. SHIVEN (CONT'D) Aur aap sir?
CISF.
MUKHERJEE Central Industrial Security Force.
SHIVEN Aapne toh kaafi action yahan aane se pehle hi dekha hoga na sir. Mukherjee stops. They reach a filing cabinet with lots of drawers. The filing cabinet is idling in a corner. Starting from top there are names on stickers - MAHENDRA, MUKHERJEE, VIJAY, BRINDA, MENON. And then KARTIK. Mukherjee unlocks and opens the drawer with Kartik's name on it. MUKHERJEE I.D. nikaal ke apne paas rakh le. andar rakh ke lock kar de.
Baaki
Shiven nods. Steps forward and bends down to keep his stuff inside. Sees the sticker and pinches it to peel. SHIVEN Sir ek blank sticker milega?
MUKHERJEE Jo sticker wahan laga hai usse lage rehne de.
Shiven takes his fingers off the sticker. MUKHERJEE (CONT'D) Nikalna mat. Shiven nods. MUKHERJEE (CONT'D) Boss ne kya instructions diye hain? SHIVEN Sair...sair karne ko bola hai. MUKHERJEE (nods) Sambhal ke. Yeh street job hai. Narcotics walon pe attack bhi hota hai. Fire bhi. Shiven lets out a nervous smile.

SHIVEN I'll take care sir. Fikr mat kijiye. MUKHERJEE Tera fikr nahin nahi n hai mujhe mujh e. Tujhe Tujh e maar diya kisi ne toh department ka naam kharaab hoga.
Shiven is stiff with nervousness. Manages to nod. Mukherjee keeps looking at him for a second or two then leaves. Shiven turns and looks at his drawer. It's empty. His hand brings the envelope in. Open it. He takes out his papers. His revolver. And then the NCB I.D. card. With a photo on it. Shiven looks long at it. The card and his photo on it makes him forget everything and he smiles with pride. There is small buckle and a belt to hang the card from. He buckles up the I.D. and then wear it around his neck. it under his shirt.
Conceals CUT TO:
EXT. STREET -- DAY Mild drizzle.
Dark skies.
Somewhere in Bhendi Bazar. A BUILDING, seen from far. out of the building.
Raja comes CUT TO:
Mahendra. His face behind the droplets covered window glass of his car. His unblinking eyes are staring at Raja. CUT TO: Raja comes out on the street and starts walking. CUT TO: Mahendra opens the car door. He steps out of the car, not even for once moving his eyes away from Raja. He closes the car door behind him. In his hand there's a cap. on his head.
He slowly brings it up and fixes it
And crosses the street. CUT TO: Raja is walking through the crowded street. behind him in the frame.
Mahendra falls in
Raja pacing ahead, is unaware of Mahendra behind him. is maintaining the constant distance between them.
Mahendra

His face almost dead as stone and blank. CUT TO: Raja turns into an alley. It is fairly less crowded than the main street. Behind him, Mahendra enters the alley. From his shirt pocket he takes out DARK GLASSES and wears them. Raja, back to Mahendra, is walking away. He turns into another alley. Mahendra's hand reaches inside his trouser pocket. His hand brings out BRASS KNUCKLES from the pocket. Mahendra wear it on his right hand and turns in the direction where Raja went. An isolated alley.
One or two passerby, may be.
Mahendra walks faster towards Raja, reducing the distance that he has been maintaining. He's close enough, when unaware he bumps into somebody. And that person quickly puts his arms around Mahendra and pushes him along, back to the entrance of the alley. Mahendra disengages and pushes the person away. It's Brinda. Her face too partly concealed by a baseball cap that she's wearing. They look at each other.
Then Mahendra looks at the alley.
P.O.V - no sign of Raja.
Mahendra looks back at Brinda, with anger. brass knuckles that he's wearing.
She looks at the
BRINDA Kya karne ja rahe the?
MAHENDRA Tumhe Tumh e pata toh hai. gayi.
Phir bhi beech mein aa
Irritated, he takes his sunglasses off.
Pata tha.
BRINDA Isiliye beech mein aa gayi.
She takes his hand in her hand and slowly pulls the brass knuckles out of it. He looks at her hand, holding his fingers. The touch quiets him down. MAHENDRA Isi ne Kartik ko maara hai Brinda.
Aadmi sahi hai.
BRINDA Hathyaar galat.
She says holding up the brass knuckles. MAHENDRA Toh sahi hathyaar kaunsa hai.
Yeh?

He says holding out his NCB I.D. Brinda looks down.
Slips the brass knuckles back into her pocket.
BRINDA I.D. wapas jeb mein rakh lo please iss-se pehle ki koi notice kare. Mahendra makes a face.
Shoves the I.D. back in her pocket.
She looks up at him. BRINDA (CONT'D) Main kisi se milwana chahti hoon tumhe... MAHENDRA Kis-se? BRINDA Batati hoon.
Yahan Yaha n se chalo chal o.
She takes his arm, pulls him away from the alley. CUT TO: From inside the isolated alley, we see Mahendra and Brinda move away.
From a hidden path in the alley, comes out Raja's stick. Then the man himself. He is looking the direction where Brinda and Mahendra were. There is fear on Raja's face.
Music: CUT TO:
INT. ANSARI'S BUILDING IN AGARIPADA -- DAY Music swells as Raja nervously climbs the stairs. his good leg allows.
Faster than
Beads of sweat forming on his forehead. CUT TO: INT. ANSARI'S HOUSE. ANSARI'S ROOM -- DAY Ansari's face.
Music halts.
ANSARI Woh log tera peecha kar rahe the? RAJA
(scared) Haan bhai.
ANSARI Tu phir bhi yahan aa gaya. hai?
Dimaag kharaab

(hurt; taken aback) Bha...bhai...
But it's hard for him to look straight into Ansari's penetrating eyes.
RAJA (CONT'D) Woh...woh log sochte hain ki unke afsar ko maine maara... ANSARI Toh...tujhe darne ki kya zaroorat hai...
Raja shuts up.
Shrinks.
ANSARI (CONT'D) Unka afsar toh building girne se mara hai na. RAJA Par bhai...
ANSARI Building girne se mara hai ya nahin? RAJA Ha...haan bhai...
Ansari leans back.
Studies Raja's fear-ridden face.
Then -
ANSARI Tu kuch din idhar mat aana. Na Wasim aur Robert ko contact karna. Zaroorat hogi toh main aadmi bhej ke bulwa loonga.
Raja, surprised, manages a nod. leave. Raja stands apologetically.
Ansari nods and gestures him to
Opens the door and gets out.
INT. ANSARI'S HOUSE. MAIN ROOM -- DAY Raja turns away from the door.
Sees Wasim walking towards the
door.
Raja lowers his eyes, balances his stick and steps aside from the door making way for them. Wasim stops as he sees Raja. WASIM Kaise hain? RAJA Theek hoon bhai. WASIM Bade bhai se mile? RAJA Unhi se mil ke aa raha hoon.
10. WASIM
(smiles) Aapko pooch rahe the. hain aap ko.
Kaafi yaad karte
Surprised Raja looks up. WASIM (CONT'D) Aadat hai na aapke saath kaam karne ki. Mere aur Robert ke saath utna araam se kaam nahin kar paate jitna aapke saath kar liya karte the.
Raja smiles weakly, unsure about his own emotions towards Ansari. RAJA
Galtiyaan bhi toh bahut hui hain mujhse. WASIM Hum sab se hi hui hain. Shuruat toh maine ki thi. Par bhai ko aapka naam aane ka fikr hai - isiliye shayad aapko alag karke rakha hai sabse.
Raja nods, understandingly. RAJA Tu jaa. Andar Anda r bhai ke saath saat h kaam kar. Meri zaroorat ho toh bula lena...
Wasim smiles. WASIM Main bula loonga...aap tasalli rakhen...
Raja puts a hand on Wasim's head and moves away. going, then opens the door.
Wasim sees him
INT. ANSARI'S HOUSE. ANSARI'S ROOM -- CONTINUOUS Wasim enters the room.
Ansari looks up at Wasim. ANSARI
Kahan reh gaya tha? WASIM Bahar tha bhai - Raja ko kuch daant lagayi thi kya? Udaas chehra liye khada tha bahar.
Haan.
ANSARI Tujhse kuch bola woh?
WASIM Nahin Nahi n bhai. Kya bolta bolt a. Uske chehre pe likha likh a tha. Aap zara khayal kiya karen daantne se pehle. Aapka purana saathi hai. Aapke kai raaz jaanta hai. Dil mein koi baat liye baithega toh pata nahin kab gaddari kar de.

Ansari looks at Wasim, not believing his ears. make him wonder for few seconds.
Wasim's words
ANSARI Baith.
Wasim sits. ANSARI (CONT'D) (surprised at himself) Yeh pehli baar gussa saamne nikla hai mera. WASIM Koi baat nahin bhai.
ANSARI Tune sambhala usse? Wasim nods slowly.
Ansari composes himself. ANSARI (CONT'D)
Samir se ladkon ka pata kiya. WASIM Woh chaaron mil gaye hain. Un logon ko police utha ke le gayi thi aur cell phone unke haath mein pakda diye the. Jo unhone laake Samir ke yahan bech diye.
Ansari looks aside, almost wanting to curse. back at Wasim.
But then looks
ANSARI Agaripada chodd ke chale gaye. Wasim nods. WASIM
Bambai chodd ke.
Gharwalon ke saath. ke paas gaanv hai unka wahin rahenge.
Nagpur
ANSARI Dono naye restaurant mein carpenter aur painter ka kaam ho gaya?
Wasim nods. WASIM Ji. Naya Import-Export office bhi taiyaar hai. Bas phones ka kuch karna hai.
Ansari nods in his chair. ANSARI Purane PCO ke paas toh jaana bhi mat. Then looks at Wasim.

ANSARI (CONT'D) Kuch din naye sim card leke kaam chalate hain.
Wasim looks at Ansari. WASIM Agar aap bura na maa maane ne toh main kuch boloon?
ANSARI Kya? WASIM BPO.
Ansari doesn't get it. WASIM (CONT'D) Call center. Mere saath do ladke Poona mein MBA kar rahe the. Unhone khola tha. Suna hai chal nahin raha.
ANSARI Safe hota hai?
Wasim nods. WASIM Mobile aur PCO se zyada. Apne khud ka telephone department jaisa. Call koi operator receive karega. Woh order lega. Lekin order dene wala apne code mein dega. Operator ko pata bhi nahin hoga maal kya hai. Order ki khabar hum tak pahunchegi. Aur hum aadmi bhej ke maal despatch kar denge deng e. Ya bahar baha r ka hua toh apni nayi courier
firm se. Ansari gently swivels his chair left and right, lost in thought. Music: CUT TO: EXT. RUINOUS WAREHOUSES. REAY ROAD -- DAY Music continues: Row of old godowns at Reay Road. The walls are blackened and moss infested. Today's drizzle has only made it worst. On the wet tarmac, Brinda's car stops. off the car.
Brinda and Mahendra get CUT TO:
EXT. OUTSIDE ONE OF THE GODOWNS. REAY ROAD -- DAY Music continues: Mahendra looks at the building.

SIDDIQUE (V.O.) Tumse pehli baar mil raha hoon. Isiliye apne baare mein thoda bata deta hoon. Mahendra looks at Brinda 'here?'
Brinda nods 'right here.' CUT TO:
EXT. STREET NEAR BALLARD ESTATE -- DAY HIGH SPEED: Music continues: Shiven walks the deserted side of the street. Sees TWO JUNKIES in front of closed offices filling their syringe with smack. SIDDIQUE (V.O.) Main jis jagah se hoon - usse British Raj ke dino mein Malwa kehte the.
CUT TO: INT. RUINOUS GODOWN IN REAY ROAD -- DAY Rubble on the floor. in ceiling.
Light and water seeps in through the cracks
Siddique stands face to face with Brinda and Mahendra. SIDDIQUE (V.O.) Malwa. Shuru mein East India Company ke raaj se independent tha - aur sabse achchi afeem wahan ugti thi.
CUT TO: EXT. LION'S GATE -- DAY Shiven shows his i.d at the gate.
The guard lets him through.
SIDDIQUE (V.O.) East India Company jo afeem China mein zabardasti smuggle karta tha woh unki state Bengal mein paida hota tha. CUT TO: EXT. OLD NAVAL DOCKS -- DAY Shiven walks past the guarded gates. SIDDIQUE (V.O.) Malwa ka afeem Bengal mein angrezon ke paida kiye afeem se bazar mein aagey na nikal jaye (MORE)

Familiarizing himself
SIDDIQUE (V.O.) Woh duty chuka ke kisaan afeem yahan laate the. Bombay. Open view of the magnificent harbour. In a corner few porters are unloading some cartons. Their SUPERVISOR casually slips something into the CUSTOM OFFICER'S hand. The Custom Officer walks away. SIDDIQUE (V.O.) (CONT'D) Jahan se Malwa ka afeem China smuggle hota tha.
INT. RUINOUS GODOWN IN REAY ROAD -- DAY Siddique smiles. SIDDIQUE Angrez sarkar Malwa ke afeem se bhi kamati thi. Aur Bengal ke afeem se bhi. Siddique looks around at the ruinous godown. SIDDIQUE (CONT'D) Aur woh afeem Bombay ke cotton ke consignment mein milaya jaata tha. Inhi godamo mein. Yahan. 150 saal pehle. Siddique looks at Mahendra and Brinda. CUT TO: EXT. OUTSIDE CHURCHGATE STATION -- DAY Signboard saying Churchgate.
Drizzling and music continues.
SIDDIQUE (V.O.) East India Company ka drug smuggling se kamaya kaafi paisa do shehron ko major business center banane mein kharch hua. Calcutta. Pull out to see Shiven standing in front of Dinshaw Walcha's statue.

SIDDIQUE (V.O.) (CONT'D) Aur Bombay. Afeem ke kamai se basaya gaya shaher. CUT TO: INT. RUINOUS GODOWN IN REAY ROAD -- DAY Siddique looks at Mahendra and Brinda. SIDDIQUE Tum history se ladd rahe ho. Usse jo yahan tab se hota aaya hai jab hum mein se koi paida bhi nahin hue tha. Jab shayad yeh shaher bhi paida nahin hua tha.
MAHENDRA Toh kya laddna chodd den?
Siddique takes a step towards Mahendra and Brinda. SIDDIQUE Apne laddne ka tareeka chodd do. Siddique looks Brinda and Mahendra in eye. say something. None does.
Waiting for them to
SIDDIQUE (CONT'D) 1839 mein Canton ke Commisioner Lin Tse-hui ne East India Company ke China mein utare jaa rahe afeem ke against ladai cheddi thi. Lin sakhth bhi tha. Aur imaandaar bhi. Aur kuch din ke liye toh afeem ke smuggling Chinese ports pe bilkul bandh ho gayi thi. Lekin phir angrezon ne hathiyaaron aur sipahiyon se bhare jahaz bheje. First Opium War shuru hua aur teen saal chala. In the end Commissioner Lin lost. And commerce won.
Siddique smiles faintly. EXT. OUTSIDE CHURCHGATE STATION -- DAY Standing in front of the statute, in the drizzle, Shiven looks down and takes his mobile phone out from his pocket. He sees a number flashing.
MUKHERJEE
SIDDIQUE (V.O.) Agar in smugglers ke saath chor-police khelte rahoge toh aakhir main dhande se haar jaoge. Inhe dhande mein harana hoga. CUT TO: INT. RUINOUS WAREHOUSES. REAY ROAD -- DAY The faint smile is still there on Siddique's face. Mahendra slightly tilts his head, looking straight at Siddique.

MAHENDRA Matlab? BRINDA (O.S.) Maine Siddique Sahab ko tumhare provident fund ke fund ke baare mein bataya hai... Mahendra turns towards Brinda. Brinda nods. back at Siddique when he hears,
Mahendra looks
SIDDIQUE Ek tarah se hum dono ek hi kaam kar rahe the. Fark sirf itna hai ki main apni chotimoti kamai se aur tum apne Provident-Fund se.
MAHENDRA Bas chota-mota haath lag jaata tha kabhi kisi raid mein cash seize hota tha toh. Agar sarkar Secret Service Fund zyada de-de officers ke liye toh mujhe yeh sab nahin karna padta.
Siddique nods. SIDDIQUE Humein aur logon ki zaroorat padegi. Jo department ki polictics - personal credit bureaucracy ko side rakhkar kaam karte hain. Brinda ne tumhara naam diya. Tum jaante ho kisi ko?
Mahendra nods. MAHENDRA Ek ko.
SIDDIQUE Kaun hai?
MAHENDRA Anti Narcotic Cell ka Umesh Jagdale. BRINDA Par kya uspe bharosa kar sakte hain? humse ladai kaafi purani hai.
Uski
MAHENDRA Uss ladai ki wajah hai - jab NCB Finance Ministry se nikal ke Home Ministry ke under gaya tha - tab Police Officers ke liye choice khul gaya tha - NCB mein I.O. ki post ke liye apply karne ka. Jagdale ne bhi apply kiya tha. Par reject ho gaya tha.
SIDDIQUE Toh Police Department se NCB ne liya kisko?

MAHENDRA (deadpan) Mujhko. CUT TO: INT. FORENSIC LAB CANTEEN -- DAY Empty canteen as usual. Amruta's footsteps bring her in, and we locate her at the far end of this emptiness. And so does Ashwani. He raises a coffee up and his spirits. She approaches the table and sits down. Ashwani already has a cup ready for her. He slides it towards her, along with a red rose.
Amruta looks at the rose. ASHWANI Happy Valentine's Day. AMRUTA (slides the rose back)
Valentine's.
July mein?
ASHWANI (smiles; slides the rose back to her)
February mein ho ya July mein - matlab to mann ki baat kehne se hai...
Amruta looks at the rose.
Slides it towards herself this time.
AMRUTA Actually rakh leti hoon. Valentine's Day na sahi - par meri wedding anniversary hai aaj.
She picks up the rose and smiles. AMRUTA (CONT'D) Thank you. Ashwani makes a sulky face 'whatever.' AMRUTA (CONT'D) And I suggest tum jaldi discuss kar lo jo bhi karne aaye ho - kyunki main aaj jaldi ja rahi hoon. Husband aa rahe hain pick karne. Dinner ka program hai. Ashwani anxiously shifts in his seat. Great.
ASHWANI Many happy returns of the day.
AMRUTA The day sure doesn't returns for you anymore.

Ashwani stops anxious shifting all of a sudden. His eyes meet her nonchalant eyes.
Stares at her.
AMRUTA (CONT'D) Tum itna upset ho kis baat pe? Main happily married hoon - iss baat pe? Tum happily married nahin ho - iss baat pe? Ya phir kuch aur baat hai?
Ashwani manages to pull up a smile from nowhere. The smile surprises her. He leans closer, surprising her even more. ASHWANI Actually iss baat pe ki - tumse tumhari shaadi se pehle main mila nahin. Amruta turns her surprise into a smile.
Leans closer.
