A Narrative Report on the Seminar-Workshop on 21st Century Teaching-Learning and Pillars of Education
Introduction:
A seminar is a group meeting led by an expert that focuses on a specific topic or discipline, such as business, job searches or a university field such as literature. Seminars typically take place over the course of a few days and involve cooperative discussion, multiple speakers and opportunities to share perspectives and issues related to the topic. Attending a seminar has numerous benefits, including improving communication skills, gaining expert knowledge, and renewing motivation and confidence. Last September 1st 2016 we, the CTE students from 2nd year to 3rd year had a Seminar-Workshop on 21st Century Teaching-Learning and Pillars of Education with the theme: Innovative Millennial Students as a future Pillars of Education. The seminar was led by two speakers from an exclusive university. And they are: Professor Alfonso S. Dangat from De La Salle University, and Professor Joselito C. Gutierrez from Saint Louis University.
Narration of Events:
Part I (Morning Session)
I arrived in Benigno Aldana Gymnasium at exactly 8:00 o'clock in the morning before I entered the gym I registered my name first in registration for the attendance. The seminar started at exactly 9:00 A.M. with prayer followed by singing the National Anthem (Lupang Hinirang), Pangasinan Hymn, and Pangasinan Stae University Hymn. After that we had the roll call first then, Mrs. Angelita D.V. Muños introduced the speaker for the first part of the seminar. He is Professor Alfonso S. Dangat, he gave us a warm greetings then he proceed to the discussion. He talked about the power of word; he even shared his experiences in life and for me it is an inspiring story; he introduced also the Patron Saint of the teachers which is St. John Baptist De La Salle; he also discussed the two options in life (accept and change) leaving a quotation "Try to accept what you can't change. Try to change what you can't accept.'' Then, he gave and expanded the meaning of the Four Pillars of Education (Learning to Know, Learning to Be, Learning to live together) and he also added the 5th Pillar of Education which is learning to transform oneself and society and to change the world. After that he gave an activity which will enhance our creativity, according to him as a future teacher we must "Think out of the box''. After our activity he discussed and widened our knowledge about the four Pillars of Innovation (People, Culture and Climate, Structures and Processes, and Leadership), he said that the people is the most important in achieving innovation because we can't spell the word s ccess without U. But my most favourite part in morning session is when we watched the kindness boomerang and the life experiences of Nick Vujicic which made me realized that no matter how life is hard we should never give up and just trust in our Lord. Professor Dangat discussed for almost three hours and he left us one message which is "Great Teacher Inspires". Before lunch break the BSE 3rdyear students gave an activity and luckily I'm one of the participants. I really enjoyed it.
Part II (Afternoon Session)
We had lunch break for almost thirty minutes after that I registered again for the attendance. The afternoon session started with a roll call then Mrs. Mitzy Macaraeg introduced to us the speaker for the afternoon session and he is Professor Joselito C. Gutierrez from Saint Louis University. Before he starts to discuss, we watched first a short film connected to his topic. Then he enumerated and explained the development of a teacher (Fantasy, Survival, Mastery, and Impact); after that he gave an activity the 4 pics one word game the answers in every picture is the characteristics of the 21st century teacher these are the: Adaptor, Learner, Leader, Collaborative, Communicator, Visionary, Model, and Risk taker) then he explained this to us; he gave us an activity again he taught to us the Give me Oil song and he even let us sing a song, the "tong tong tong pakitongkitong song'' with twist which will enhance our pronunciation; he also brought different instructional materials and he demonstrated it to us; and he's final talk is my favourite when he said that as a future teacher we should follow the path of the greatest teacher which is Jesus Christ. Professor Gutierrez talked for almost three hours also then he left us the quotation said by Lao Tzu. "The Journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.'' After the session we had a picture taking with Professor Joselito C. Gutierrez, Mrs. Mitzy M. Macaraeg and Mrs. Angelita D.V. Muñoz.
Reflections/Insights:
This seminar really has a significance for me because of this learned a lot of things that I can apply on my life and on my chosen career someday. In the first place I hesitated when I paid fifty pesos because for a student like me it's too expensive for a one day seminar but I'm wrong. Those realizations, learning, hope, and motivation that I earned from the seminar is really worth it. These are my realizations that I can apply on my own life: I must accept the things I can't change but I can also change what I can't accept; although life is hard we should not give up and trust the Lord; and promote love and kindness. And these are on my chosen career: I must have the characteristics of the 21st century teacher maybe I don't have yet those all, I think I can find a ways to have those; I should do my responsibility as a student first before I can be a great teacher this is referring to the quotation by Lao Tzu; and I must follow the will of our Lord for me, he will be always my inspiration, for me to become a great teacher that will not just teach but also inspire students someday.
